I think you should take into consideration that fashion and styles were totally different 8 years ago. and that these girls pioneered a style that is so common among girl groups today
Blackpink is the first Kpop girl group that I really fell in love with, their individual journey's are what drew me to them. They come from such different backgrounds and have gone through so much. They have never been the kind of group to release music every year but they have always had a special place in my heart despite the fact that I wish they would have a much longer discography. This alone makes me love and appreciate them more, because even though they have (most likely forced to and had no option) been creatively restricted for a reason I will never understand, they still managed to become one of the biggest (THE biggest in my opinion) Kpop girl group. My favorite song from them is probably from their last album BORN PINK, maybe Yeah Yeah Yeah or Pink Venom
The minimal arrangement of Whistle was a bet for their music production, I think they wanted to recreate the minimal hip-hop feel of songs like Drop it like it's hot, to me it's a banger! Also the music video is incredible, there are also references to Hitchcock's movie Vertigo!
If you like melodic songs I recommend the B-side songs of Black Pink, especially "You never know" or Happiest girl and tally, which are more recent. I hope you get to hear more from Black Pink.

I've always thought Jennie's voice was artificially pitched up for her rap in the first verse of Whistle, then it's pitched normally when she sings in the second verse. I think they do something similar with Lisa's voice in her rap during the second verse, but it's kind of less noticeable because Lisa's voice is higher than Jennie's already.

Fun fact : Whistle is like “a miss or hit song” for their debut, the member and the producer said it themselves, they said they loved it but the executives of their agency not really liked it so that was why the producer kinda in dilemma whether they should release this song or not but then his final decision was to release this as their debut song alongside Boombayah. Then they got their first win in music show with Whistle and Whistle got a lil more popular than Boombayah in Korea

Blackpink is the first Kpop girl group that I really fell in love with, their individual journey's are what drew me to them. They come from such different backgrounds and have gone through so much. They have never been the kind of group to release music every year but they have always had a special place in my heart despite the fact that I wish they would have a much longer discography. This alone makes me love and appreciate them more, because even though they have (most likely forced to and had no option) been creatively restricted for a reason I will never understand, they still managed to become one of the biggest (THE biggest in my opinion) Kpop girl group. My favorite song from them is probably from their last album BORN PINK, maybe Yeah Yeah Yeah or Pink Venom

The minimal arrangement of Whistle was a bet for their music production, I think they wanted to recreate the minimal hip-hop feel of songs like Drop it like it's hot, to me it's a banger! Also the music video is incredible, there are also references to Hitchcock's movie Vertigo!

Blackpink is Iconic, BTS opened the world to Kpop, but Blackpink brought Kpop to your Area (that punchline never stops). Alot of newer fans criticize them for their style and musicality, but you have to remember this came out in 2016! Each member has grown and changed their style and doing their own individual work right now.

Boombayah and Whistle were a dual debut release to show the black and the pink of the group. 900+ million views, 10million likes, 400million streams on Spotify…I think it’ll be alright if a few people don’t like it.

I've always thought Jennie's voice was artificially pitched up for her rap in the first verse of Whistle, then it's pitched normally when she sings in the second verse. I think they do something similar with Lisa's voice in her rap during the second verse, but it's kind of less noticeable because Lisa's voice is higher than Jennie's already.
