I want Rodney to follow up on this on his next WatchItPlayed video! "The rulebook doesn't mention where to put the board but I contacted the publisher and they said the center of the table is fine or whatever" 😁
I've always wanted to play Horrified but, as noted, I had no idea where I was supposed to put the board. I see you guys set it up under a table. Did you find an online FAQ or something? I don't see a link in the description. Maybe just an oversight. 🙃
This is great. Reminds me of my favourite thing from the old booklet manuals inside the PlayStation version of Abe's Oddysee. "If we have to explain the controller buttons to you, this game is going to go way over your head."
You know, I've never seen a rulebook say that the board should be *unfolded* and put in the center of the table. Just that it should be placed at the center of the table.
I was waiting for you to find one exception where the rule book actually says to put the board on the left side of the table. "SEE?? You would have been WRONG!!"
I absolutely agree. I want everything spelled out in detail. Not just that, I want every rule to have a number. If the rule book doesn't look like _Star Fleet Battles_ , I'm disappointed.
This video is for all of us who have said, "uh, technically that doesn't happen in this phase yet...(moves the phase tracker)....ok now you can do it."
This is 100% fact. The rules should also say which way to orient the board, depending on where players are sitting and who is playing a particular faction, if any.
Now I'm thinking of the silliest place to play a board game. When I was much younger, I recall playing Dungeon! on a couple of chairs (and sitting on the floor) because there was a puzzle on the table.
This gave me flashbacks to when people go online and ask if they can do some extra action, b/c the rules doesn't say they can't (Jackie Chan "what" face here).
To avoid spending 20 minutes searching for a tape measure to determine the exact center of the table, we have house ruled to put the board in the middle of the table.
Note to self: if I ever get a board game published, mention that the board needs to be placed 7.5cm from the north-east corner of the table. Rotate said table as needed.
I love this. As a fan of tabletop RPGs, the number of times RAW comes up as if it were gospel…. I think I am gonna share this from now on. Brilliance. Simple Brilliance.
The game Haleakala can tell you to Mark your scores by moving your scoring markers on the scoring board according to the points you score, but it does not say place board in center of the table.
Ironically this is a commentary on both the hilariousness of that first setup instruction, and the fact that sometimes rules are super ambiguous... Lookin' at you First Martians....
Solid, as always. Love having "technicality" arguments with people that don't play games - "does the rulebook SAY that???" And Shea with some legitimate acting chops? Right on, brother.
Whenever you are new player that bought a board game you want to learn the setup for the 1st game and reading every detail is important. Otherwise you will be like Paula, where this piece goes, where should I play this card, etc. Nice video I enjoyed it!
If I ever design a board game, the very first line of the errata will say "put the board in the center of the table" and I will apologize for the oversight in the rulebook to clarify this.
Many people watching this video: 'Haha, funny!' Those with OCD or autism spectrum: 'Truth!' Actually, I think of the 'put the board in the center of the table within reach' rule my 'eye rolling rule'. Don't want to spend time on that, wanna set up fast fast fast :P
Oooh! This is the rule I've been missing when my friends say I won because I didn't explain all the rules. Having the board 2cm closer to me was key to my success though. :P
But... what about every board game Rodney has ever taught us? Did the rules say to place the board in the centre of the play area? Or did he make assumptions each time? A CAN OF WORMS HAS BEEN OPENED HERE, PEOPLE!!
Call me a maniac but I like a diagonal board, & I enjoy it when a rulebook allows me to live that maniacal truth. I'm also typing this on a diagonal keyboard and looking at it on a diagonal monitor. Yes, I have neck problems; what's your point?
Omg! Paula, you are an amazing actor!! So funny! 😄 And the whole video is so professional made! And I love seeing another familiar face in the video, hi Shea! 😄 Thank you sooooo much for this! Amazing guys!
Looking at the rulebook it seems that the board should be placed in the leftmost 3/5ths of "the playing area" (could be the floor), giving room for decks to the right hand side of it. Whose right? Doesn't say.
This is definitely a side of you I would never ever want to either cause or be the brunt of. :) (double checks all his videos to make sure the boards are centered on table, de-lists all that aren't... )
I invited friends around for dinner, and was following a recipe. It gave great instructions about how to prepare and cook the food, but no instructions on how to serve it. After several hours of angry words exchanged my friends agreed (to leave hungry).
I'm like Shea in this video, except when midway through the game I realize it doesn't make sense to count points a certain way, because that was not fully clear, and then I wish the had saved themselves the trouble and text of telling me where to put the board, and used it to tell me more clearly how to PLAY the game! Am I ranting? Are we all ranting? Nah. Paula's video is a figment of my imagination. A very well done video, if I must say.
Thank you to Shea Parker for being in this sketch with me! Check out Shea's work at ruclips.net/user/RTFMShow and also at ruclips.net/user/rahdo
I just checked all the rulebooks I've written and in none of them do I specify where to put the gameboard.
I sincerely apologize.
@@Andy-Mesa YOUR HONOR, WE GOT HIM
@@Andy-Mesa Thank you for taking responsibility. This is how we grow.
While I realize She's had few lines...he nailed it! I was fully impressed but the well executed facial expressions and flat responses. Well done!
@@Andy-Mesa Good! It's useless :P
I love how patient the guy is 😂😂😂
Paula has just ruined every rulebook for me that doesn't tell me to place the board in the center of the table. I now cannot unsee this. :)
Why did you unfold the board? Who said you can unfold the board? What if unfolding the board is actually PART of the gameplay itself???
You joke, but this is actually a thing in Mushroom Eaters. You start with the board folded, and you unfold it as you play.
Indeed! I was going to post something similar! ;-)
Where did she get the authority to start reading the rules? Did the rulebook say it was time to start reading the rules?
Maybe the rule about where to put it was inside
@@michaeldunkerton3805 Now we are in legacy game territory.... "don not read this rulebook until a card tells you to".
Arkham Horror: "Place the board in the location most disadvantageous for the investigators."
I want Rodney to follow up on this on his next WatchItPlayed video! "The rulebook doesn't mention where to put the board but I contacted the publisher and they said the center of the table is fine or whatever" 😁

🙃
That's so much better than my practice of hanging it on the wall.
We had a player balance it on their head. Really seemed like the only logical choice given that we weren't told where it should go.
Now THAT is a great idea! Totally trying that next time we find an incomplete rule book! :)
The rulebooks says to put this video in the center of the table and to hit the like button below it
Sometimes, I am a rebel…..I place the game board to the side of the table just to throw off the space time continuum.
Ahem _face up_ in the center of the table. We wouldn't want anyone place it facedown by accident.
Thank you for your specificity. It is appreciated.
This is great. Reminds me of my favourite thing from the old booklet manuals inside the PlayStation version of Abe's Oddysee. "If we have to explain the controller buttons to you, this game is going to go way over your head."

oh no. I've been playing every game wrong. Thank you for pointing out the error of my ways.
I'm glad someone else said it lol.
I was waiting for you to find one exception where the rule book actually says to put the board on the left side of the table. "SEE?? You would have been WRONG!!"
Yay, Paula’s back!!
Shea plays straight man so well. Essential to sell the joke. Good job man!
Shea is amazing! Very lucky to have him in this!
I absolutely agree. I want everything spelled out in detail. Not just that, I want every rule to have a number. If the rule book doesn't look like _Star Fleet Battles_ , I'm disappointed.
Ha! Shea, you did great...priceless reactions. Paula...hilarious as usual. Love it!
This video is for all of us who have said, "uh, technically that doesn't happen in this phase yet...(moves the phase tracker)....ok now you can do it."
I've done this so much, technicalities that doesn't matter right now but could matter in other times
This is 100% fact. The rules should also say which way to orient the board, depending on where players are sitting and who is playing a particular faction, if any.
I gotta bookmark this for all the Rules Lawyers out there. Sometimes common sense IS supposed to trump the rules.

genius level house rule
Note to self: if I ever get a board game published, mention that the board needs to be placed 7.5cm from the north-east corner of the table. Rotate said table as needed.
I will be looking for that! :D

Boardgame Psycho : The Movie starring Paula Deming - I need this now!
This is an actual conversation.
Ironically this is a commentary on both the hilariousness of that first setup instruction, and the fact that sometimes rules are super ambiguous... Lookin' at you First Martians....
This is the most Paula sketch I have ever seen. And I love it.
Solid, as always. Love having "technicality" arguments with people that don't play games - "does the rulebook SAY that???"

It me, thinking of Paula every time I place a game board in the middle of a table for the rest of my life 😂
Mission Accomplished
As if she wasn't living rent-free there already, any time we crack open a board game... ;)
One of your best ones yet, Paula. Great work!
I almost never put the board in the centre of the table, even if the rulebook tells me to. It's usually off to one side a bit. I'm a rebel.
This was excellently entertaining as always :)
Great video! Shea's delivery was exactly what I expected from seeing his videos, really good job man!
Funny as always. And really nicely filmed. Hope you do a TV seroes one day of "things get dicey"
I know a billion people have said this, but I am so impressed with Shea's acting here!
😂😂😂 I loved this! Things get even more dicey when you don’t even know where to place the cards. 😂
Ha ha! Another fab vid - thanks for sharing.
(I want to see a run through of First Martians following this format!!!! 🤣🤣🤣)
The rules are made to be broken sometimes, yes yes. So I say let's put the board next to the table.
Haha. This so great. Well done by all!
someone please give paula a sitcom
i have never even placed any board on a table. it's always on the carpet on the floor with all my kids sitting on the carpet around it.
Great to see you both doing something together! really really amazing
Brilliant video. I laughed out loud! Thanks!
thank YOU for laughing!
Now you've cursed me to look for that indication in every game I play from now on. 🤦♂

Paula going full Rachel Bloom is A+
This reminds me how we teach ourselves in our group. It is in good spirit and we are all having fun (at least I hope so).
Really glad I discovered your channel from Time Watch, I know what I'll be binging tonight.
wooo!

My favorite part of this video is the massive anxiety I get from seeing multiple games opened simultaneously.
You're such a natural at comedy!
Look, shes obviously just wants to be the first player! 🤣🤣🤣

Paula Deming is a national treasure.
-hurriedly checks twilight imperium rulebook-
Forget Dacula and Shining this is the true horror story.
truly a nightmare
I feel bad for the guy now.
It could go under the couch? 🛋️ We'll never know! 🤷
I feel like such a rebel when I place cards or tokens other than where the rulebook says.
The poor rulebooks hurt in the making of this production... Fun vid! 😄
Please more collabs with Shea!
Should of checked the BGG forums to see if the designer had answered any questions about board placement :)

Soooo good. Thank you for putting all our inner demon voices into these sketches. I love 'em.
So that's why the rulebook tells you to put the board at the center of the table
You should post the question the rules section of Horrified on boardgamegeek.
She does have a point, you know! LOL
For some of us, that video had a painful ring of truth :)
You didn't tell me where to click to like this video. How am I supposed to express my liking of this video without the proper instructions?! 😵
This is me in real life. Paula, you're an wonderful talent x
I'm gonna get gigs writing rulebooks just so I can tell people to place the board on the ceiling.
Another gem!! 💎 Paula you’re a comedy genius. But also… I feel seen.
This is why we stopped banning coffee and energy drinks at game nights!
I totally thought of this video when playing starship captains for the first time this weekend.... where does the board go????
Now I want to know if any rules say to put the board in the upper left portion of the table or something along those lines
I think you have a really good point here...
This was a great one 🤣
Really brought the energy and that's a cool outfit Paula
hey thanks!!
When the rule book doesn't say, I assume creative license and put it off-center.
Looking at the rulebook it seems that the board should be placed in the leftmost 3/5ths of "the playing area" (could be the floor), giving room for decks to the right hand side of it.

Introducing the latest in comedy gold: PaulaShea! (SheaPaula?) Either way, great job team!
"So, we can't play on tabletop simulator or boardgame arena because they don't have tables?" :)
Amen.
LoL, of all the things to get bent out of shape about...
Though I do see your point; some rulebooks are better written than others.
LOL, dear RUclips Algorythem, I aprove of this recommendation.
If that’s your idea of a bad rule book, then I’ve got some reaaallly bad news for you. It gets worse….SO MUCH WORSE! 😊 Great video!
😆 That was hilarious. Paula and Shea, conga-rats. 🥳
Rules are hard! lol!

v reasonable
It doesn't say you CAN'T trade resources!
Was I supposed to face the screen while watching this?
What did the rulebook say?
I wish she pulled out etherfield. Where do you put that board. Or ruins of arnak, on where you should sit at the table
I'm like Shea in this video, except when midway through the game I realize it doesn't make sense to count points a certain way, because that was not fully clear, and then I wish the had saved themselves the trouble and text of telling me where to put the board, and used it to tell me more clearly how to PLAY the game!
