  • Nikon is winning!!
    Earlier this year I collaborated with ‪@nikonusa‬ for the release of their new retro inspired full frame mirrorless camera the Nikon Z F to create a short mini doc to test the Nikon Z F in the field to get a hands on review on what I thought about the camera.
    This camera is not only aesthetically pleasing but it has a lot of the technical features of the Nikon z8 and z9 but in a smaller and cheaper package. It is very comparative to the Sony A7cii in specs so it comes down to which camera will inspires you to make magic! Is it time to let the Nikon jokes go? Are they fighting for their right in the filmmaking space with this camera?
    In this video I give my thoughts on the Nikon Z F, I also compared it to the Sony A7CII as I had the opportunity to test that camera on release last month and I talk about who I think camera is for!

    Great video! I was looking for more reviews of the video side and am happy you got the camera to test. Nikon didn’t seem to produce many units to lend out for days or weeks. Only people that were a part of the development process seemed to have them for more than a few hours. Thanks for giving us a documentary and sharing your thoughts.

      Nikon is so different where they don’t let anyone have the camera unless a rep is there which is weird because we don’t get to really dive in. But it’s very similar to the Sony a7cii. Crazy is the rep didn’t even know it was 4k crop till I pointed it out trying to shoot slow motion lol.

    I've seen so many mixed feelings about the Nikon ZF. Honestly it is way out of my current budget, but the ZF is the camera I've been wanting for years. Currently I am in the Microfourthirds system shooting photos, but the ZF is my wishful thinking camera.

      It’s a good camera. I didn’t really have any issues outside of the 4k/60 crop. Everything else is pretty standard. It’s nice to have the same sensor as the z8. But I think if you’re happy with what you have no need to switch.

      @@BrittneyJanae I am definitely happy with my MFT, I shoot an Olympus E-M1X that does the trick. My thing is that some clients(the ones that understand photography) like the FF sensor more. They want that extreme subject separation and all that. I started on Nikon, so Nikon is where I will go back to. And I definitely get the 4k/60. If I shot video I would feel the same. I'll keep my em1x for everything else besides portrait clients. Plus it shoots 4k and has computational qualities and extreme weather sealing.

    The Nikon Zf is the camera I wanted but it didn’t exist when I switched from Fuji to a7c. I have only a 35mm prime for it so the decision to sell my Sony to preorder the Zf is the easiest I ever made.
    I was excited for the a7c2 and the a7cr, but they feel like cameras that were handicapped so that customers have an upgrade path to the a7r5. They are not cheap, but feel cheap compared to the “real” pro line.
    The Nikon Zf in contrast feels like an end-game camera for non-Leica prices. It feels like a dream camera: premium and gorgeous.
    It’s a camera that will make you ignore GAS for years because you already have exactly what you wish for instead of compromising on certain features that make you produce a pro and con list to help you decide.

      I feel like I would like to talk to you on this topic, since I am trying to make up my mind and you seem so certain. I could really use your input. For example, what is the handicap? The EVF resolution?

    • @city.hermit
      @city.hermit 7 месяцев назад +1

      @@spanishmackerel It's about the overall feeling. If you buy an a7cr, you will keep dreaming about the a7r5 because of certain "handicaps" like the EVF and dual-card slots. The video capabilities are software limited although it has similar hardware just so that there's a reason for you to buy the "pro" camera. And let's face it, although it can certainly do pro work, the a7c line is not marketed as such. It's more like the ultimate, absolute best point and shoot camera. Yes, I think the a7cr is better than the Leica Q3.
      If you get the Nikon Zf though, there's nothing quite like it, so if you love it (some don't), then there's nothing else out there for you. It's already the "pro" version in its class. There's also dual-card slots so you can do pro work with it worry free. It's packed with features and for the price, it's kind of crazy. Only downside is that they packed the Zf with the old 25mp sensor instead of the newer 46mp one. My guess is that will come with the Zf ii.
      On the A7C, the ergo was super clunky, I was finding myself constantly going to P mode because I didn't want to deal with the Exposure triangle with the A7C poor control scheme.
      On the Nikon Zf, it's not perfect and sometimes clunky as well, but it does inspire me to dial in my settings manually.
      I do get jealous of the A7CR insane resolution though and Sony's AF is better than Nikon's, but for what it's worth, I took more pictures with one month of the Zf than in one year with the A7C already.
      I do miss the A7C's compact and lightweight nature though, the Zf is much heavier and the size is closer to the a7r5 so it's all a matter of tradeoffs.
      Hope that helps

    • @spanishmackerel
      @spanishmackerel 7 месяцев назад

      @@city.hermit It does help, thanks. I think the points you mentioned may not apply to me, but there's only way to find out. Don't care about dual slots as I'm not a pro. Do care about size and weight. My old film cams and DSLRs all feel ridiculously large to me now, compared to the various Fuji APS-C cams I've been using for 10 years. I don't use AF. I need at least a minimally decent grip. I don't see how hard the triangle could be for me, because I shoot like this: manual focus vintage lens, A priority. The exp comp wheel then becomes the shutter speed, and that's all I have to do: manually focus, set the A on the lens and turn the wheel until the look and the histo look good. Then click. My attraction to the Df would be a 40-year familiarity with their film and digital cams, and their colors. My attraction to the CR would be small form factor and high res. Any further thoughts, based on my usecase and your experience?
      I'd like the "5" for the EVF, but that's it. It seems big and heavy compared to the CR.

    • @city.hermit
      @city.hermit 7 месяцев назад +1

      @@spanishmackerel The EVF although better than the A7C is the only thing that might be an issue for you then with manual lenses. I think the A7CR would be better then for size in your usecase if you can deal with that viewfinder. You should go try it out

By the way, if I think I want to shoot manual lens for now, is ZF going to be fun for me with that layout or still A7RV better for me as it's has better practical usability and even tho I going to shoot video on Panasonic HC-X1500 camcorder, I sometime want to shoot on bigger sensor camera but my favourite color is yellow hence Nikon and Panasonic menu yellow themes are my liking!

      8 stops is for photo, it’s 5 for video however, it works quite well in video. It’s similar to Active stabilization in Sony but, not as good as Dynamic Active stabilization introduced in the Z -E1. I had the A7R V which had an improvement over FX30’s Active stabilization, paired with the 24-105 OSS lens it provided stable footage. Running the footage from that combo through Catalyst Browse, ended up with some gimbal like results, with even more crop to the footage. I ended up trading the A7R V for the Z8 as I loved all the extra video codecs in that camera and they seemed quite similar in stabilization.

    Nikon has the better EV and the better shutter, Sony is more modern (AF) and has many more lenses (and cheaper ones) to choose from. But it is more a cultural thing about how to use the camera (interface modern or traditional, plastic or clicking wheels, rangefinder or SLR style look). Even when I am more convenient with the Nikon (I have to think less to get good photos) I have to appreciate 33MPixel raws and the magical save AF of the Sony (when correctly configured). Choose the lenses first then try both cameras at the dealer. the 24-120 from Nikon is better than the 24-105 from Sony. The 24-70 GMII is better than the Nikon handling wise as all GM mkII lenses are and they are optically superb. But if you want cheaper lenses like the Sigma 16-28 or the Tamron 70-180 G2 you have to look where they are available. Nikon has marvelous 1.8 lenses. Sony has a good 35mm 1.4 but the 1.8 is old fashioned the Sigma 2.0 one is much better. Cheap 1.4 lenses from Sigma are only available for Sony not for Nikon. Using flashes, I have much better experience with the Nikon flashes than with the Sonys. Each system is good but there are differences.

    It seems you never use the viewfinder because you mainly goes for video. And for video you may have better choices than these two cameras. The retro style of the Nikon is made to suit the photographers but the flip screen isn't, this shows the problem of mixing to different crafts which need different tools. Same for the Sony, it want to play the range finder style of photography but the viewfinder is just not up to the task, and again the flipping screen is for video not photography. Both are wrong for photo and not dedicated for video. The video doesn't seems to satisfy you, the photo side do not please me, we are both expecting something else.

And I am with Brittney, the zcameras and i think a lot of other hybrids can fulfill a lot of those jobs. The average hybrid camera we have nowadays is much superior than 99% of video cameras we had 5-10 years ago and with my Nikon I can do both with a switch of a button.

    I have to say that B&W mode is BS and a marketing gimmick if Nikon had created RAW B&W mode to extract more details of the sensor that would have been something but to add B&W jpg switch is such a low point regardless of what RUclips reviewers say, wait to see real-world user reviews. I understand reviewers have to find some new exciting features. Looking forward to testing the camera sometime in the near future.

      From my knowledge it's not a black and white jpg switch at least for video You can shoot black and white in HLG and SDR. I don't know much about the photo side because I'm a filmmaker and that's what I was testing it for.

      In photo which is the primary use of this camera, you still retain the raw and Fuji got all the praise in the world for its film emulation jpeg. So I don't feel anything bad about this. You just have to choose what you want.
