@@dukedashwolfgg2283 The irony though is that the whales they're "protecting" aren't endangered in the slightest. Of the three species the Japanese take, the Fin whale is the most endangered being classified as vulnerable, or 3 out of 7 on the conservation scale. The other species, the Humpback and Minke whales aren't endangered whatsoever. The numbers of whales taken are also very low and really don't amount to much year over year. If we're talking about the oceans there are far more pressing concerns than Japanese whaling. Besides, it's obvious their tactics don't work. The Japanese are still whaling and Sea Shepherd aren't targeting them anymore.
Activism is dumb, it doesn't bring people around to your side, all it does is make them go home thinking they're even more in the right. Activism is more about the activists than whatever cause they're supposedly championing. It's a way for some people to feel accepted and a way for others to assuage their guilt.

The U.S. appeals court has labeled militant group Sea Shepherd as terrorists and cleared the way for Japanese whalers to pursue legal action against them.
Alex Kozinski, chief judge of the Ninth Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals, declared “When you ram ships, hurl glass containers of acid, drag metal-reinforced ropes in the water to damage propellers and rudders, you are, without a doubt, a terrorist”.
He added in a ruling that dubbed Sea Shepherd founder Paul Watson as “eccentric”.

The whalers threw a spear at the Sea Shepherds in an attempt to either hurt someone or puncture the inflatable and send everyone into the freezing ocean.

They were NOT defending themselves either. They were safe up in their big steel ship.

    • @info145

It's called "direct action"! Not like other organizations that collect donation and do nothing. The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society hits where it hurts. As we all know by now, Whales are very susceptible to toxins (like mercury). Well, when the japanese kill a whale, the Shepherds use the legally harmless "stink bombs" of butyric acid to taint the meat so the whalers can't profit from it. They also block captured whales from being brought aboard by the harpoon ships and processed. They also block the whalers from connecting with re-fuel ships, to hinder their operations. So now whalers will have spent the costs of fuel, salaries for their men, food & supplies, whatever licenses, and bribes... and have little or nothing to show for it but bankruptcy.
This, PLUS the ever-continuing court battles, will hopefully bring it all to a permanent end eventually! For those who don't know, the japanese government started a branch in 1987 they named "The Institute of Cetacean Research". They kill and immediately slaughter hundreds of whales every year while claiming they need that many for scientific research. The whales are cut up and boxed (with labels) minutes after being caught. Research? What research?

The SS have done some radical things (not shown or mentioned in this show) but I think that they should be praised for taking such lengths in fighting for what they believe in.

Unit731:"In WW2, prisoners of Japan were subjected to vivisection without anesthesia. Vivisections were performed on P.O.W.s after infecting them with various diseases. Scientists performed invasive surgery on prisoners, removing organs to study the effects of disease on the human body. These were conducted while the patients were alive because it was feared that the decomposition process would affect the results. The infected and vivisected prisoners included men, women, children, and infants."

I think whales are much smarter than we think. They trust people ecause that is in their nature, they are such gentle creatures! It is a trait that humans, sadly, have traded for greed in arrogance.

    ATS Artilce 1 states:
"area to be used for peaceful purposes only; military activity, such as weapons testing, is prohibited, but military personnel and equipment may be used for scientific research or any other peaceful purpose"
That clearly does not ban military weapons in the Antarctic. Weapons can be there, they just can't be used for testing and such.
Whaling is not illegal on an international scale. Yes, some countries have outlawed it in their waters. Not in international waters.

@branahawk discussions are fun, civil or not. it teaches you a lot about yourself and others. trying to be all hats and mustache about it is fine for when you're face to face with the person and ought to be respectful. We are emotional and aggressive beings after all.

DR. TIMOTHY STEPHENS: "Sea Shepherd argues that they are enforcing international law on the high seas when no one else is prepared to step up to the plate. That's a very strong moral argument. It's not a very strong legal argument because we just don't accept that the law can be enforced in a kind of self-help or private way on the high seas. I mean, we don't really accept vigilantes in our society enforcing the law. We don't accept vigilantes on the high seas enforcing the law."

Sea Shepherd is a marine conservation organizations. They focus on SEA stuff. There are many more organizations advocating for human farm animal treatment than marine conservation. One group can't focus on everything. It's like asking why humanity organizations won't help starving animals. Because they help humans and other groups help animals.

My personal position is that any and all sustainable hunting/fishing should be allowed. Period. Once a species becomes endangered it should not be hunted/fished anymore. If properly managed no species would ever become endangered. Over hunting/fishing in the past has lead to some species becoming endangered. I feel that proper managment will allow for both species to flurish and for hunting/fishing to continue.
It will take work and compromise to acheive this. The SSCS refuse compromise.

All Commercial and Industrial fishing need to be outlawed. Let the seas and oceans return to their natural state. Allow only manmade lake fish farming to feed the masses. Self-sustainment fishing is okay as long as limits are in place to protect from overfishing.

In a letter to Japan, published in the NY Times, sponsored by the World Wildlife Fund, 21 scientists declared: "Japan's whale research program fails to meet minimum standards for credible science. Also, their whaling is not designed to answer questions relevant to the management of Whales & Japan refuses to make the information it collects available for independent review & its research program lacks a testable hypothesis and performance indicators needed for acceptable scientific standards."

Japanese brain: Issei Sagawa (born June 11, 1949) is a japanese man who in 1981 murdered and cannibalized a Dutch woman named Renée Hartevelt. After his release, he became a celebrity in Japan and made a living through their public's interest in his crime. Sagawa described himself as a "weak, ugly, and small man" and claims that he wanted to "absorb her energy". His wealthy father provided a top lawyer for him, but he was released after only two years and without a trial. wikipedia. org
