  • CHARLESTOWN CORNWALL | A beautiful Cornwall village in St Austell between Mevagissey and Fowey and popular for day trips and holidays. The village has a fantastic beach and a historic harbour that has been a Dr Who, Where Eagles Dare and Poldark filming location amongst others.
Charlestown is a picturesque harbour village situated on the south coast of Cornwall, England. Established in the late 18th century, the village was once a small fishing community known as West Polmear. Today, Charlestown is known for its well-preserved Georgian architecture, its historic harbour, and its connection to film productions.
Here are some reasons why you should visit Charlestown:
Take a stroll along the harbour and imagine yourself in the 18th century. The preserved Georgian architecture transports visitors back in time, allowing you to experience the ambiance of a bygone era.
Charlestown has been a backdrop for many film and television productions, including Poldark, Dr. Who, and even the Tim Burton classic, The Nightmare Before Christmas. Keen movie buffs can try and spot filming locations around the harbour.
Learn about Cornwall's rich seafaring history at the Shipwreck Treasure Museum. Explore artifacts recovered from shipwrecks that lay scattered along Cornwall's rugged coastline.
Charlestown is a great base for exploring Cornwall's stunning coastline. Take a walk along the Charlestown to Porthpean circular walk, a scenic route that offers breathtaking views of the surrounding area. Or, relax on the nearby Porthpean Beach and soak up the sunshine.
While Charlestown itself doesn't boast a vast number of top-tier visitor attractions, the surrounding area offers a wealth of things to see and do:
Explore the heart of the village. Take a boat trip around the bay, admire the beautiful ships moored in the harbour, or simply soak up the atmosphere of this historic port.
Delve into Cornwall's maritime history through fascinating artifacts recovered from shipwrecks. Uncover stories of exploration, trade, and the occasional disaster that befell these doomed vessels.
Lace up your walking shoes and embark on this scenic coastal route. The walk offers stunning views of the harbour and coastline, with opportunities to spot wildlife and enjoy the fresh sea air.
Immerse yourself in the local art scene at the Cscape Art Gallery. This gallery showcases the work of talented Cornish artists, offering a glimpse into the artistic heritage of the region.
Witness the art of pottery-making firsthand at the Craft Kiln. This pottery studio allows visitors to observe the creative process and even purchase unique handmade souvenirs to commemorate their trip.
Explore the captivating Lost Gardens of Heligan. Once overgrown and forgotten, these magnificent gardens have been beautifully restored and offer a delightful escape into a world of flora and fauna.
Discover the world under one roof at the Eden Project. These giant biomes house a diverse collection of plants from around the globe, providing a unique educational and visually-stunning experience.
Take a tour and learn about the brewing process at the St Austell Brewery. Sample some of their award-winning beers and discover the rich brewing heritage of Cornwall.
Step back in time and explore Lanhydrock House, a historic Victorian mansion surrounded by beautiful gardens. Immerse yourself in the grandeur of the house and stroll through the meticulously landscaped gardens.
Catch some waves or simply relax on the golden sands of Fistral Beach, a world-renowned surfing destination. Enjoy the vibrant atmosphere of this popular beach and soak up the sun.

My very much missed mum, adored Poldark. She looked at it every night and I recognized Charlestown straight away. Love the harbour and historic heritage. Beautiful ❤️. What's the tune you always play Neil? Look at the sea ⛵ and sky. Get me there now. 👍👍🏖️

Is Cornwall easy to get around if we don’t have a car? We prefer local transport… trains or buses. Any recommendations? Thinking of staying somewhere like Looe or Penzance, staying a week or so and day-tripping literally everywhere in Cornwall. We are seniors, so hiking the whole area is not an option, but day hikes are ok.

There are local buses yes. It's not the easiest and would really depend on where you wanted to go or see really :)

Don't like the fact that there is street food shops everywhere spoils the heritage of the site, especially as its UNESCO recognised . Typical exploitation of a beautiful scenic cornish village.

On the flip side I really like it - it’s a great way to eat good food and enjoy the views
I guess everyone has different opinions on it though and can see your point definitely
(The harbour is also privately owned too)
