You got lucky. Those 2 wires that was loose if had been backwards would have blown the capacitors an or diodes. But cudos for trying an getting lucky.. 😆
Just bought the exact same identical 1973 model with both coils at an auction. It appears to be in unused condition. I snapped in three 9 volt batteries and it appears to be functioning perfectly. Don't know what i'll do with this vintage detector yet, but, for a winning bid of just 26 bucks i couldn't pass the old gal up. Might just hang it up on the wall as a cool old nostalgic art decoration
I have a deepseeker I'm trying to get working again. where would you send it? I've asked Garrett if they do repairs but haven't heard back yet. I ordered a new battery tray for it but upon sliding it into place the unit would not power up. 😞 You're lucky you only had 3 t wire up. My unit took SIX 9-volt. And, on that noise when it starts up, I just played with an old Whites Coinmaster and it was loud at first but you had to set a "threshold" with the tuning knob to get the noise to just a low buzz. Maybe this unit had one too? oh, at 3:19 you mention that. I tend to comment as I'm watching instead of watching the entire video. sorry. I did a video on my channel testing the Coinmaster and it did not detect more than a couple of inches deep but I probably don't know how to adjust it.
Did you have schematics of this detector ?
Charles Garrett wrote a lot of books on metal detecting and detectors. He proved his detectors all over the world.
