Jokic had 678 assists this seasons. That means at least 1300 indirect points for him and his team. If he was selfish he could score 40+ points each and every game. I used to play basketball in the team where he played as well as a junior. I know mentality of citizens of his home town. We call them LALA which means kind a lazy and slow person. But in action they act like tigers. Many famous basketball players came from his hometown like Korac, Rebraca etc. Trust me he is extremely happy and thrilled to be NBA champion but they won't show you publicly. He is one of a kind and he is eager to go back to his second home town of Denver to play again. He loves Denver, people there, his coach Malone, dear team mates.

Thanks for this post. Can you tell us more about his character from this cultural reference point? There seems to be this mask of indifference - the guy who face times his horses and doesn't care that much about basketball. Yet we also saw him roaring and screaming and making his team roar and scream too on every big play going down the stretch to close out the Lakers and get his revenge. Those of us who have followed him have learned about words like 'inat.' How would you describe that mask of indifference? Is that just him? is it a Serbian thing?

We as a nation suffer injustice, so that automatically means that he goes through injustice too (not winning ROTY, not winning MIP, not winning the 3rd-in-a-row MVP). But, he really is a special specimen. There is no other. He passes both the stasticial and the eye test. I write down his stats after every game. Next year he is going to break top 50 at pts, ast and reb (in playoffs), and atleast top 200 in those three categories (in reg season); i hope that Denver builds a dynasty around him, he can finish his career with 4-5 rings, and with 5-6 mvps (if the injustice doesn't reappear). add some FMVPs, top 10 in all metrics; and he is there - then he is on GOAT level! @@oli1521 He made me start watching basketball again after a long time not caring anymore. Modern play became boring. If the league had half a brain, they would recognize the return of Magic and Larry style basketball, true basketball, when they saw it. I think Jokic's genius might singlehandedly breathe life back into the game almost despite the league and its media.
Oh, and I would not worry much about MVPs and 'injustices.' It is supposed to happen this way and only makes things better.
The alltimers were always treated this way.
Who is more august now, for instance?
Kareem, MJ, Lebron? [Denied MVP 3peats]
Or Russell, Wilt, Bird? [Given MVP 3peats]
For most, the 3 I named without MVP 3peats are considered 1 2 and 3 in most people's top 5. Voters like to spread them around.
For example, in 1993 they gave it to Barkley over MJ, denying him the 3peat he would have had. Then MJ dominates the postseason, including Barkley in an all-time duel, and left no doubt who was the best.
Then there was Hakeem, not a 3peat case, but when they gave Duncan Robinson an MVP over him, and then he did what he did to Robinson and everyone else in the postseason, it only added to his aura to "lose" a voter's award.
This year we saw a story from Bleacher Report outlining, from inside sources, how little Jokic cared about this year's MVP. I don't believe that part was a mask at all and I do not think the NBA media gave the MVP to Embiid so much as Jokic HIMSELF gave it to Embiid, just gave it away at the end. Let his minutes and stats drop when he easily could have "padded" to a 25 point tripple double which would have forced the voters to vote for him, because how can you not then? From what we saw of the postseason, as every postseason before, he could have padded" to a 30 point triple double if he wanted to. No, he just cares about winning when it matters most.
And that is what he told us and, more importantly, told his team and organization when he gave up the MVP to get a bit more edge in the postseason. Not just him talking like he's selfless, he really is. More Duncanlike than even Duncan.
      Who even loses an FMVP????
Trust me, it is the right thing that he didn't get the MVP this year, not because he didn't deserve it - he did. But because he joined an even more elite cub than MVPs, now he is with the MJs and Hakeems whose greatness was so great that "losing" MVPs only made them look better in the long run.
Da real MVPs, the people's MVPs, and ultimately the undeniable winners. Just look at the paroxysms of the media. They did not respect his MVPs, but he forced them to respect his ring. Only now can they admit that he is the best in the league, many wouldn't even put him in their top 5 after 2 MVPs. This MVP-less season was worth 5 of the previous MVPs in those terms.
I don't really care how many more MVPs he gets, he is so demonstrably above the voters' whims at this point their recognition has ceased to matter.
I will guess at least 4 or 5 more rings & FMVPs - or maybe he will give an FMVP to Murray. It hardly matters. We might be watching the goat.

Big up to Kobe, he was one of the first ones to actually recognize Jokic' talent and see future star in him long before anyone did.

Same as horses but they may be above basketball if I am honest... but what comes above both of these things and always will.. family. That's the Jokic message.

Jokic is SO fundamental with his play that he sees and executes on every little advantage which the defense gives him as he PATIENTLY PRESSURES THE DEFENSE to get the defense to react to what he is doing in the moment. Their reaction opens something up. Defense cannot take away everything so he literally takes whatever is given as he goes through his paces, and he has the mechanical skill to execute on the options as they appear.
The essential skill he has is to ALWAYS be facing the basket vision-wise even when he is not apparently looking at the basket. This way he sees everything but also has the fundamental skills of passing, dribbling, and shooting at 7'1" to take advantage of whatever materializes as he forces the situation to develop, PATIENTLY.

Admiral won 2 titles as a bus rider, and in the 2nd one he was a shell of himself. He was a great defender, but imho Joker's offense outweights Admiral's defense, plus postseason play margin is significant.

The shooting guards and the two-way players only give him props after the team's success. He was always this good. Even now they struggle to explain why he is so good while Hakeem already knows that Jokic had the best footwork in the league 2 years ago.

He lost about 25lbs at the start of the bubble season and has remained trim since. He's basically the same size as Anthony Davis (6' 10" 253) and you can't see any size difference when the two of them stand next together.

Most of the guys are losing themselves by playing in front of the public for public, looking cool and looking good, and feeding their own egos. This guy plays for the game and to win, and can not care less if he looks good, strong as an animal, fast or handsome...
