- Hello friends!
I’m Elisabetta, an Italian watercolor artist with a passion and a curiosity for art supplies and pigments.
Today we are swatching and comparing 7 different brands of Titanium Buff: Daniel Smith, A. Gallo. R. Szmal, Rembrandt, Van Gogh, Da Vinci and Wallace Seymour.
Titanium Buff is a "dirty" white that is ideal for botanicals but also for urban sketching, animals, and clouds.
There are subtle differences across brands that you cannot notice unless you swatch them side by side.
ERRATA: as pointed out by a followr Van Gogh formulation is PW6+PBr7 and not PW5 ....apologies I misread my label :(
Come swatch with me! And comment please!

As the proud new owner of a full tube of DS Buff Titanium, I found this very validating that I've chosen well. Thanks for doing this process for all to see!
Having a new tube of DS buff titanium must give a sense of accomplishment! I agree! Thank you for sharing this . I can perfectly relate ❤️
My Van Gogh titanium buff in an half pan is formulated with PW6/PBr7.
Thank you so much Paulo!! I double checked my label and you are absolutely right :( .... I mistook the 6 for a 5 because the character is very small. I have added your information in the description box because apparently I can't correct the video now...thank you for pointing this out.
Just about to finish my tube of DS Titanium Buff but will definitely pick up a full pan of Roman Szmal as well when replacing. Super interesting video. Many thanks from Australia 😎
I have really enjoyed all of your groups of different colors of swatch comparisons. It is fascinating to see the differences. Thank you for doing these. Merry Christmas!
Differences among brands fascinate me as well…thanks a lot Marg and happy holidays!! ❤️
I got Roman Szmal’s buff titanium for Christmas and I can’t wait to play with it. I think I might like the DS even more, but it is quite pricey. I like painting polar bears, I’ll have to paint another one when I get to play with it. Love how yours turned out!
Hy Sonya!! I think Roman Szmal and Daniel Smith are basically identical! I only slightly favour tubes over pan, but Roman Szmal quality is amazing…painting the bear with Titanium Buff felt like cheating!! A breeze. Happy new year my friend and thank you for your support!
How useful ! (My presents included TItanìùm Buff and Grey ! ) I have the Michael Harding Buff which is very pigmented but closer to A.Gallo in shade. I think I like the less brownish colour as more version for landscapes/cityscape. Like you I've not explored the Grey yet so look forward to when you do. Many thanks.
What a nice comparison. I just got the Wallace Seymour Buff Titanium and intrigued by this pigment PW28. I have the Michael Harding Buff Titanium and its a little greyer than Daniel Smith's; Daniel Smith's will always be my favorite of the group.
Daren, DS is the king of buff titanium! I agree with you. I wish I had Michael Harding….happy holidays!
Van Gogh is GREAT for skin tones!! They all have their uses, it all depends on what you paint!
Mmmmhhhhh interesting!! What colour you mix with it?
You have your Da Vinci, yay! I had to laugh that you crave the California made paint and I hanker for the A. Gallo and Della Magna (I had to cancel my order from there as the shipping was "troppo caro"! Your husband chose lovely presents for you. I received sheets of Fabriano Artistico 300lb paper. Will I ever have the nerve to use it??!! Another marvelous video, looking forward to seeing you in the New Year! Buon anno Elisabetta! xoxo
Thank you so much Michele, you are the kindest! Happy new year my friend….and let me know what you think about your new Fabriano paper 😍
Use that paper
I love your polar bear, and this very helpful and interesting comparison. I like your favorites as well I love the warm colors :)
Thank you!! the polar bear was so easy to sketch with this colour.... Happy New Year!
I use the DS version of Buff Titanium (the benchmark color as you say). Thank you for showing the Liz Steel mixture, I was fascinated to see how those three colors mixed so well together to create a nice Buff Titanium. Awesome!
Hi!! I found it absolutely amazing, this mix! You are the only one who mentioned it 😳. Have a very happy new year my friend! Happy holidays. Thank you as usual for your message.
always enjoy your wonderful videos! I really liked the combination of the cobalt and buff titanium. Happy Holidays!
Happy Holidays to you!! Your words are very kind and they mean a lot. Have a wonderful 2024!
I use my Roman Szmal Buff Titanium quite a bit. It is one of my go to colors on my palette.
It has been an acquired taste for me….but it’s a quite unique colour. I would like to try it in buildings. 😀
I love buff titanium, but I only have one! Perhaps I need a couple more! Thank you for this video comparison.
Hi!! One buff titanium is more than enough, unless you are a crazy collector like me 😂. However, it’s nice to alternate them just to experiment. Happy new year and thanks for stopping by!
It's not easy to draw animals and you did it so easy and well done. I love the result of the polar bear :D I don't have this colour, never used, as I never use white in my watercolours. But I see the use you did and other watercolorist and I like it. Feliz Navidad y Próspero Año Nuevo Eli!!
Thank you so much 😀It's a fun colour to have, but not a priority.... buon anno Estivaliz!
It’s here!
I hope you like it 😃
Oh yes! I’m surprised that the Rembrandt one is very grey.
@awatercolourist so was I!! A bit disappointed….☹️
Oh.. que alegria al fin llego mi Van Gogh Buff Titanium. Gracias por compartir
Grazie a te!! ❤️
I just found you in my recommended and I love your comparison. I was born in Catania Sicily and adopted here in Phoenix Arizona usa.
Heyyyy!! My mother was also Sicilian… ❤️❤️❤️do you speak a little Italian? ❤️❤️❤️thanks for your message. Buone feste ❤️
@@WatercolorElisabetta I only speak a tiny bit and I would love to speak more but at my age learning another language would be somewhat of a waste since I will never be able to travel again.
@ArtandDiamondsWithEskies so you can speak the universal language of Watercolor ❤️
@@WatercolorElisabetta yes and I really enjoy doing photorealistic animal portraiture with colored pencil and OMS to make it into paint on the Fabriano artistico hot press that I love
Thank you for sharing this comparison video. When this first came out, I tried mixing my own, but eventually bought buff titanium by DS. I also enjoy MMG juanne brilliant #2 for mixing. Both are excellent staples. That bear is a winner. 🏆 😍 I love it.
Thank you Tracy!! The bear was so easy with Titanium Buff that it almost felt like cheating 😂. Thanks for your contribution.
Love this video
Thank you Magdalena!
This is a wonderful video! Thank you!
Thank you so much!! It was very interesting for me as well
Thank you for your position about Russian paints🙏🇺🇦✨️ I hope you will be able to try new colors from Rosa Gallery, that were released in December.
I have not tried the new colours yet! I will immediately check out. Thank you and happy new year!! Of course I stand with Ukraine 🇺🇦!! 💙💛
@@WatercolorElisabetta 🤗thank you! Happy New year to you!
A great, thorough review. Thank you.
Thank to you!! It’s always great to hear appreciation 😀
Nice bear. I wish you a happy new year
Happy holidays Maria! Thank you ☺️
this is gorgeous, a fantastic tutorial 😊
Thank you for your support!! Your messages always make my day 😍
Another great mixing session and mastering our watercolors. 🎉 Wishing you a wonderful New Year ❤. Here’s to new discoveries 😅
Thank you!! And happy new year to you!!
Thanks for the video! I have only DS but now I want also Rembrandt because it looks like a brilliant. Also thanks for nice magic music 🎶 I like your bear
Thank you so much Elena ☺️ I wanted a festive music!! Glad you noticed it. Ahaha art videos unfortunately always stimulate shopping 😂
Excelente review ❤
Grazie mille Maria Laura
Excellent! Love using white ... I don't need to buy a lavender and many other colors if I have a white in my pallet. Titanium white makes for a great hue on concrete sidewalks, light stucco houses, and the nice neutral grey when mixed with a real black. 😊 I have the Van Gogh (white) & Daniel Smith (T. white) versions of your 10. I prefer a mono white.
Thanks for the comparison 👍
Thank you for your comment! It means a lot. Have a very happy new year! (I know I could mix my lavender but I love my lavender by Rembrandt! ❤️)
Fantastic video Elisabetta! Buff Titanium can be such a versatile colour, I enjoy it too. I tend to use it in mixes. I have Danial Smith. Cheating on your sketch?? Mine would end up looking like a dog!! 😂 Your painting was lovely, don’t downgrade it. ❤️❤️🖌️🎨👩🏻🎨🎄❄️☃️
Hello dear Anita!!! I was sure you had Titanium Buff ! Happy new year my friend and thanks a lot for you kindness 🥰
Thank you for the info! I was wondering if I should invest in this color, and I am not so sure... seems like it'd be possible to mix yourself with some Chinese white and a touch of earth yellow or brown, maybe a little black. I have a tube of Chinese white that I basically never use, so I might experiment a bit and see if it's useful for me. Merry Christmas!
Have very happy holidays yourself and thank you for your comment!! Let me know about your experiments if you wish!! It’s always fun to experiment 😃
@@WatercolorElisabetta So, I saw that I had erroneously purchased the Rosa Gallery Naples Yellow Light, which is basically titanium white with a touch of yellow ochre or raw sienna, I think (normally I use the White Nights version which is pure PY216, and I absolutely can't paint skies without it). I tried some mixes with PR122, PG7, and PB60, and it seems to mix all the powder pinks, pastel greens and blueish grays that I have seen people mix with buff titanium. It is slightly more yellow-leaning but I haven't noticed it much (my blues didn't turn green, for example). May be a substitute for people who want to try it out on a budget (Rosa tubes are like 2.80 Euros in Germany).
Anyhow, sorry for rambling :) Happy New Year!
Hello Elisabetta - I am debating buying the Rembrandt or AGallo because I need a light wash... was wondering can you do a head-to-head comparison of the lightest of the Buff Titanium.... in a wash from the darkest mass tone to the lightest wash please... it would be so helpful. The whole box of each swatch is all the mass tone.
Hi Sarah!! Are you on Instagram? If you are, I can dm you a photo of this comparison! Cheers!
lol 😂 that white nights binder problem is a huge mess spotted regularly. They also put less amount of paint in tube than it’s said to be
I have not been buying a single tube from them since the beginning of the war. These are the first tubes I had bought, I think pans are maybe better!! Thank you for the info about the quantity in the tubes…it’s really incredible if they do so 😡. Anyway, I really have switched to Rosa Gallery now!
Si us plau, no barregeu l'art amb la política ni la guerra.
Why not?
Great review 👍 How does the Qor Titan Buff compare to DS and WS?
Hi!! I do not know I’m sorry!! Good question though…
The titanium white (101) from White Nights it's a buff titanium?
Hello Hugo, I have never tried it but I suppose, from the name and pigment, that it should be an opaque white, not a titanium buff.
@@WatercolorElisabetta Thank you, I also think the same. I've never seen anyone try this watercolor to be sure. I ended up buying Van Gogh's titanium buff so I wouldn't make the wrong choice.
@TheHugooo15 it’s the one in my palette! I like it very much. Good choice 👍
