I truly believe that we as responsible fur harvesters owe it to the animals to always be striving to improve our ability for a quick and humane dispatch
Really great video man thanks! Here in PEI we can't use rams, but we can use those kill springs. I've been recently more concerned about the effectiveness/cleanness of kills and restraints. I think I'll have to get some of those 100lb spings and I'll make sure to get the toothed cams. I also buy most of my stuff from Stephen. Hes a great guy. I may be moving to NB here soon, who knows maybe we could meet up some time and you could show me how you run your line, who knows. I'm hopefully gonna be doing some trapping with Stephen this year, he also supports my RUclips channel and we talk quite a bit on the phone. Anyways, thanks for the videos keep it up!!!
My snares initial cost is $3.17 to make but I can reuse the 6 foot extension, 800lb barrel swivel and cam lock with teeth and spring. Just need 4’ of cable and 2 ferrules to make a new one.
You're right... the snare debate will always be ongoing. Mostly, it will depend on what trappers can legally use in their respective jurisdictions. One thing is absolute - the quicker the animal is dispatched, the better. Less chance of escape and less chance of the animal damaging itself.
Apparently if you use a loop and double furrel on your lock it will act as a locking snare? Haven't tried it because I can't. The swivel is a must have
We have to use relaxing locks because of all the dogs and deer. I don't believe that we have to use deer stops but I hunt dogs and have dogs run my trap line so I actually agree with it. We have a 24 hour trap check and 12 hours to get an animal out if we are informed something is in our trap. Power snares or non relaxing and 8' of cable and I could probably get 100+ deer per season when I coyote snare.
@@NBWildman the first year that I coyote snared on a carcass pile over 30 years ago and I had 4 dead does and a 6 point buck that a deer hunter had shot. Relaxing locks, 12" loop, knee high with 3/32,7×7 cable and about 8" to the bottom of the loop. I have short legs. 😁😂 I told you we have lots of whitetails. We had 24 deperdation permits at that time. Now we have bonus doe tags per county. Your animals are probably way more spread out. We usually get a couple of black bears a year on the north or south of the state but no moose and bobcats in the southern part of the state. A mountain lion or 2 will pass through the middle of the state to breed each year but cats and bears are off limits because they don't live in the state.
400 meters ? WOW . I shot a nice whitetail buck out of my bed room window two seasons ago . Only problem was I had to wake my wife up so the muzzle loader would not scare her .No houses in the direction of the shot .
I now here with the month long wolf season are deer are taking a hard hit an then with the low fur prices the otter an mink are so think here I know the trout an steelhead are taking a hard hit an with Martin nit getting killed are Grouse an Ptarmigan are taking a hard hit so im thinking about getting back into it just to help out an just tanning my fur
Relaxing locks are a requirement in my state, footholds illegal, body grip must be 100% submerged under water. It's crazy because in an adjacent state snares are illegal, body grips can be set on land and foot hold are legal.
In southern Ontario we are stuck with relaxing cable restraints because people wont obey leash laws. Funny how the people who break the law get consideration and we pay the penalty.

Great tips I think kill springs are best for experienced snares the can get you in trouble with deer if your not careful.
I agree, but a properly set snare shouldn't catch a deer, and if that becomes a problem simply add a breakaway device
Could u give me a list if what ill need to build beaver and otter snares an a list of what ill need for wolf snares an there extensions please
Do you bend at 90 degrees your senneker spring or it can be straight on the wire? Tks

in my 30 years of trapping I have tangled up one deer, a small doe which i released...

wow, no we have to be 400 meters, even in the middle of the woods, if your closer than 400 as the crow flies, your no good
@@NBWildman don't forget 800 m from a school or playground
