I like to look for products that can do double or even triple duty. A good pair of sandals can be used as water or hiking shoes or taken into a shower. A good backpack can be a main bag, personal item, or day pack.

Really good criteria for selecting products. The first one eliminates plenty of over specialized or unneeded products. I have a list called daily travel list on my phone that I update as I travel. It has everything I pack or wear and in order from sleeping to getting up and ready to normal daily activities. I add or update as I go along and any product under consideration has to be needed and not owned or replace an item because it is better usually in several criteria. Once I find something that works I stick with it until I find something better. I have managed to get everything to use USB C so my laptop brick and a single power bank and cable can charge everything. I also use a exfoliating cloth, solid shampoo and shave soap and tablet toothpaste so no liquids.

Love it! Thanks for sharing. We usually stick with the same products until we find something better as well. ❤️

I am so impressed with your videos! I am practicing getting ready for a trip to Ireland in the spring. Because of my age (61), I am packing as lightly as possible. I abandoned pouches for ziplock bags. They are SO MUCH LIGHTER, and you can see everything inside. I also think I will be taking my smallest backpack (Underseat Pro), because it is under 3 lbs. I am guilty of purchasing travel gear based on recommendations from RUclips folks, and I have definitely made some poor choices. Your checklist is very, very helpful! All the best to you both!

Quality -- 100%. Buy the best you can and use it as long as you can. Buying once is much, much cheaper than buying multiple times.

As someone once told me: "I can't afford to go cheap!"

I changed to a Mystery Ranch mission rover 45 from an Osprey Farpoint 40 as better quality, 1.5 lbs heavier but 1.5 less in length. Better shoulder harness. Leather shoes for general street use and strong low shoes for hiking that fit in the separate shoe pocket on the pack. Sandals to use as water shoes and just walker ing use a good quality containof 3-1-1 as the zip lock bags do not last have had bottle leak and so did the bag. Use gallon freezer bags for under, socks etc as you roll them thus compessing air out and being able to see whats in them. Carry solid bar shampoo and body soap and lather for shaving cream. Generally quality costs more but you are out from home and a piece of gear malfunctions can get frustrating fast. Be cloths pack etc.do carry an electric razor as I would have to shave 3 times a day. I refuse to use roller carry-on luggage as with wheels it is longer by 2 8nches and heaver by 2 lbs also in many places the surface and steps are impossible. Packs with harness you pick and go. Many airlines restrict weight to 7kg or 15 lbs. You may be able to stuff the 8 lbs of hiking boots and snorkeling gear and still close the bag but it weighs 25+ lbs. Are going to get that into the overhead bin muscle through 5 blocks of cobble stones. My wife has a Mono hybrid carry-on but it can be a pain. Tne mate to it is a ckeck 30inch, they do have zippers but latches. They sealed so if heave rain they will float. In China we stay with carry-on and under seat. Do not take laptops but use tablets with keyboards.

I hate to say this, but given dimisons of personal item bag, I have gone with a recycled bag that has a zipper. I can load stuff in it,and not have to buy something smaller. Now to talk my husband into taking the backpack I bought when I came home. Alpaca 35L, while I take my Wandred 30L as my carry on.

Reading reviews: especially look at 3 and 4 stars which are typically more balanced, less uber partisan or uber opponent, and often listing pros and cons. A bonus is when such review suggests another model or brand you've never heard of to look up. And this is not only valid for travel gear, but for ANYTHING!

Hello, Ian watched a couple of videos of yours and it taught me many things! I've been going online and trying to find more experienced people with airlines and I wanted to ask a question, I don't know if you cover pets or pet tips but I want to ask about pet carriers counting as pet carry-ons. I want to take my pet aboard but the airline says that it counts as a carry-on, though this doesn't make sense considering it can fit above you as the pet carrier can go below your seat. I've seen many people online say they went through and didn't get in trouble but I just want to make sure I can too. I was wondering if I could say it was my personal bag, i want to take my cat but if he counts as my carry on i might not be able too, what do you recommend I try doing?

Great video! I have the issue with fit and weight. I’m only 5 ft and have issues with packs and weight. I also love using zip lock bags and I’ve been guilty of buying things and they don’t work out when I’m traveling

I travel a lot domestically (2-3x a month) for work. Best hack ive found for toiletries for short overnight trips is getting small (5ml jars) and clear travel pouches (1oz refillable). I have saved so much space/weight. Also switching to a different backpack 30L vs small 25 L. Makes a difference!
