Ancient times rules laws were different. It was important to maintain sanctity of mandir, so those who ate and sold meat were forbidden to enter temple. Nothing personal. Poets also understood this. Sadhna pada of yogasutra too teaches abstinence and vegetarian diet as very important. Abhanga refers to poet saying he is inferior in dharmik context. They were not being discriminated against out of spite or prejudice. It is important to understand history because nowadays people are needlessly villifying Brahmans.

Abhangs are not meant to be rigid wrt to raag and bhaav. In that regard abhang falls into the semiclassical genre. While the base is that of Bhoopali, it is not unusual to leave the framework and return.
Please do not insult the artistes by calling them inept, based on your misunderstandings.
