My notes from back when I heard this - I enjoyed this one. The songs at their core tend to be pretty basic, but the album does some rather surprising things along the way and keeps me interested. Most of these songs are good, a few are really good, a few are just OK, and "Go Little Boy" I'd say is very good and the best song despite the fact that accordion and tuba waltzes are not my thing. I enjoyed hearing the double bass throughout the album, and the occasional opera vocals were an unusual choice that I think works for the most part. The main vocalist actually sounds a lot like Peter Garrett. This album didn't blow me away, but I do think it's worthwhile and I would go back to it. 3.5 stars
Midnight Oil were often at odds with their fan-base. They conducted themselves as a savvy political band of university (college) graduates. Their fanbase was largely what we would call bogans or yobbos. The band was grateful for this support but wondered what this fan-base saw in them. The existence of these German copyists brings a wry smile to my face.
Speaking of the Oils, I just watched the doco “Midnight Oil: 1984” from 2018 for the first time. Do yourself a favour (😉) and check it out. It was grrrreat!!!
If Midnight Oil had picked up Nina Hagen on their way to a gig with The Waterboys. And then I think they're going to do a homage to the wonderful dbs; Ok, so no, I didn't really think that. Your scores are a little more generous than mine, but, having said that, I still like the journeys through the obscure. Great upload.
I think this album is an excellent example of why it’s better to choose a more TIMELESS sound for your album. Those effects and early 90s motifs that aged like milk outside of the early 90s, like that acoustic guitar sound and the female backing vocal sound immediately dates it to the early 90s.
I have those too! He went to the same high school as my dad. Graduated with my uncle. Met him at the studio I interned at for awhile. Almost did a project with him. Ultimately didn’t happen.
My review from when I listened: Has some 80s-esque vibes vocally at times - inflection wise makes me think of an exaggerated version of the vocals of bands like Midnight Oil but not really an 80s sound musically. Often the backing vocals don’t work for me (like the operatic ones on “Hipp Hipp Hurray”, not totally sure it fits). Also on the next song - don’t really like their vocals together. Not a fan of “Stop”, talk box or whatever it is doesn’t really work for me. Really don’t care for the female opera vocals in the mix. The 80s inspired vocals sometimes seem at odds with everything else. The mix of things like accordion and tuba are interesting. I’d definitely say there are plenty of interesting elements here, I am just not sure if the finished product is something that I personally enjoy. I didn't write down a best track or even a worst, 3 stars
I could pretty much do without this album. It sounds like it's trying to be something that it's not, and by the way, that's not most of the 90's. If I had to rate it, I would give it a lite 3.0 I've heard wayyyy better albums that do what they are trying to do.
Hitting all the key search terms with that title.
Never heard you mention Midnight Oil before. Glad you have heard one of my favourite bands of the 80s. Worth a listography?
I think they would be. - Joe
I wonder will you guys do a Midnight Oil Discog Dive?
That would be great, but they have really slowed down on discographies. They are much more interested in deep diving individual years these days.
Neither of the guys are into the Oils that much. I think Oils fans would find it disappointing. Not Jason on Prince level, but still disappointing.
I can definitely hear Peter Garrett in that guy's voice. I can also hear Matt Johnson (The The).

Sounds like it would be an excellent Record Store Day release. Hope the CBS David Werner record from the late 70's gets one !
I have that record. Also have his phone number in my phone. -Jason
Awesome ! Melanie Cries is great as is Can't Imagine. He wrote Cradle Of Love which Billy Idol covered. His RCA records are good as well.

If the band is bad I want to apologize for them. Greetings from Leipzig/ Germany 😂
Just listened to it....two words...hate it!

Maybe TLM should be more discerning in your review picks. Much too focused on the obscure
We don’t pick them. Our paying Patreon members do.
