- When mountain bikers think about Crested Butte, Colorado, the 401 trail is most likely the first trail that comes to mind. We knew of more technical trails like Doctor Park, but everyone said 401 was Crested Butte's most iconic trail. We can see why. Our mission was to make the 5-mile ascent to 11,000 feet without dying and bomb down as fast as possible. While there isn't much in terms of "tech" on this trail, it's still high risk in some spots due to off camber sections and extremely narrow single track. One miscorrection of the front wheel riding at speed is enough to send you down the flowery mountainside. The views are nothing short of spectacular. Keeping your eyes on the trail is really tough when you're in the middle of arguably the most beautiful trail in Colorado. We had an absolute blast on this trail and will definitely be back to explore more of what Crested Butte as to offer!

I rode this trail 23 years ago. It hasn’t changed a bit. I am so happy to have found this video. I have been reliving that ride, this trail in my mind for 23 years and finally got to see it again. thank you!!!
This video made me feel sooo good...I thought I was weak for having to walk and take breaks lol
Awesome vid guys. Loved it! I appreciate how you show the whole trail and not just the highlights. It provides a much better feel for the trail. Keep up the great work.
Nice video! I did this this last summer and that climb was brutal, but totally worth it.
I don’t feel the need to go beyond North America. Epic! Can’t wait for my 2021 summer trip!
Welcome to Colorado too many hills not enough air!!!!
good video seems like a great ride.....words can not describe my level of discomfort when shoes came off but socks stayed on for the water lol
As soon as you guys started talking I said to myself these guys are from Miami Florida🤟😀🤙 awesome video
Holy off camber-ness! Stressed me out watching it, but rad!
Right on guys. Great trail. Those altitude climbs are no joke especially for us flatlanders! Nice riding.
Florida Trailrider yeah man it was killer for us to get up there but we made it!
Got a trip in June coming up, can’t wait to ride out there!
Siiiick shred and views
My style!!! Beautiful!!!
Im going up there this weekend to ride all over the place soooo stoked!
We're going back later this month! So pumped!
love this!
The climb after the lake... I know why you didn't show it... It's humble pie mania. I don't think I showed it in my video either. Loved your video man, can't believe you did it two years ago, I may do it in few weeks, snow should be less by then. Love your content.
At 3:05 if u walk up that path about 35 feet you can actually see one of the mountains in Aspen. And at 7:40 in that rocky bit my dad had a double flat.
Now I don't feel so bad. They walked more than I did. Hahaha. Cool trail but no snow over the road when I went up there on the 4th of July weekend.
Great video, did u guys climb and then come down the same way?
The video is really well stabilized. What did you shoot it with?
I rode this trail on Thursday last week. I shot with a GoPro but my video has much more shaking. And mine is not as fast for some reason!
We are using wearable gimbals for our gopros. Thats why its so smooth!
The headset on your handlebars makes a perfect upside-down pentagram.
What's that all about?
how long did it take to climb?
What bikes did you guys have for this ride? I just bought a giant trance 3 advanced and I wonder if my bike can handle this type of downhill. Amazing video!
for the future, yes, you will be 100% fine. my whole squad rode this back in our hardtail days - and we are FAR from experts, i mean we're pretty much str8 up goons.
you could ride this with any bike.
You guys missed the bottom of the trail, it's the most fun part!
Hey man..
Great video.. are you guys riding hard tails? Or full suspension?
What’s your advise?
you definitely need a full squish for this one
On a scale of 1 to 10 how hard was the climb and was it technical at all? Also how difficult was the downhill and what 1 out of 10 rating wouldn’t you give it
MN mnt biking just put out a video on this. Doesn't appear to have changed.
Coming from Florida, that climb must have been rough.
I can attest that eaven to the xc riders, that climb is absolutely grueling. that 5.8 mile climb turned out to be a 3 mile climb and a 2.8 mile hike-a-bike
what month did you film this?
Hi everyone
Does anybody know what is that place (I’m guessing is a trail head) where they parked the van?
Thanks
That trail head is accessible by driving up the main road that goes past the ski resort. Keep driving up and over the mountain and follow the road back a couple of miles. I’ve been there last year but don’t know the name of the road. Easy to find
Nice job with edit, and riding.
Check out my 401 vid@ SWFlowseeker
Thanks man we'll check it out!
