  • Kurotani Japanese paper is designated as an intangible cultural property of Kyoto Prefecture.
Its history is more than 800 years. There is also a theory that it was started as a technique to be passed on to descendants by fallen warriors of the Heike clan. SHINJI HAYASHI was one of the people who went on to become a craftsman of Kurotani Washi in 1996 under the successor training system.
The raw material for Japanese paper is the bark of the mulberry tree. There are roughly 15 processes to make Japanese paper. Washi is made all year round, but the best time to make it is in winter. Mr. Hayashi says that the cold water, air, and humidity make the paper much better than in summer.
Mr. Hayashi also serves as the president of the Kurotani Washi Cooperative Association. I am committed to nurturing successors through classes and workshops at universities and to keeping Kurotani Washi alive. Kurotani Washi is used not only for paper, but also for cushion covers, business card holders, and even stoles.
"The sound of water is the poetry of paper"
This is a sentence that Mr. Hayashi came up with. What is the thought behind these words?
