tongue and groove hardwood flooring for the tray deck is a really good option to consider. I replaced mine 7 yrs ago on my Hilux and its still in great condition. Far warmer in the colder months to sleep on as well
I love ya work mate, Great idea!, Great content!. I had no idea about Cad until you're videos!. keep it up, i reckon you've inspired a couple of your viewers!!.
I have 2 landcruisers both 1978 models one runs a Turbo diesel with 5 speed box and high ratio diffs, the other has a V8 diesel 5 speed box i like the old landcruisers i use Jarrah on my tray floors
Rich, these videos get better each episode mate 👏 Perhaps throw some car builders sound deadner under the sheets on that tray once its secured, low coast solution to ensure minimal noise.
Use sticker flex on all of the joins top on bottom , it is paintable and stops rust. I put my battery’s up the front of the tray in a drop down box with exhaust heat shield. Sticker flex is a product use to glue on side panels on new busses with no other fixing. Hope this helps.
The storage draw is gonna be tricky because it’ll need to be heat insulated and weird mounts on the exhaust side etc. but the build is looking good so fair.
12:50 here in Germany Truck Companies, like Mercedes and MAN, give a guideline how to build on their chassis. I am talking > 7,5to. In general: Never drill on top the C-letter Frame and mount on the SIDE of the frame! Because it take the load of the structure. So actually it is the opposite of what you did. You can googles those guideline (which actually mean it is the ONLY way to build legally in GER (and probably EU)). Those are availible from their websites.
I’ve used countersunk rivets with sikaflex to fix the ally plate on my tray, doesn’t make any noise. Could also be the fact there’s a giant canopy ontop lol. Great tray though! Your cad designs are way above my brainwave I wish I had those skills. I still on the dumb end of a tape measure
Nice work. Where is the spare tyre going? May make sense to fit that under the tray (if possible) and run your storage box(es) on the tray + 4 posts and a roof top tent ;)
I wanted to put it down there so badly! It would have been incredibly close to the exhaust and the whole tray would have had to move up 100mm which may have been a pain for actually using the tray! Current thought is to hang it off the back. Hoping to have a modular setup, one for touring and one for wheeling hard so the weight will be in the wheelbase when wheeling hard!
Hey Ron, not a bad idea at all. I guess with the canopy on it makes sense to have smaller access panels so they can still be opened rather than having to remove the whole canopy.
great build.... although it concerns me when you believe an "exo cage" is an option on a registered vehicle in Vic... well i assume it's going to be registered and if so are you doing the mods in consultation with a VASS Signatory engineer? cheers.
@@DesignedandBuilt sweet. good to hear someone doing the right thing."roof rack support"..lol. ive watched Boosted & Built Garage in NSW call his exo cage that.. internal half roll cages are fine.. check out vsb 14..it gives you all you need to know on ALL modifications. cheers
Im a welder just use thicker metal where required not the thin shit your using and running through your computer we don’t need to run anything through a computer for help it’s common sense
Fair enough mate, everyone has their own method. I don’t want everything to be unnecessarily thick because it would put stress on other parts. 4mm will be fine, it’s not exactly “thin shit”.
@@weldthatiron3683 I laser cut reliefs into it and then welded them back up so I could fold them in my vice! I'm Trying to make it strong, but not too heavy so the computer helps me as I'm inexperienced and don't want to make everything 10mm haha. Cheers mate!

Such great work Swindel! Awesome to hear all the structural justification in your decision making.
Can't wait to see it continue to progress.
Thanks mate :) More to come!
The tray looks unreal can’t wait till the next video
Cheers Jake!
Mate.....slaying it. Well done. And good to see Alex getting involved. Been a while
Haha cheers Brian! Yeah glad to have him involved, he’s a huge help!
Good work Richard !
Thanks Russ!
Hey mate, love your work.
Is there any chance I can buy a copy of the tray drawings you put together
That head board is sick the tube makes it, love this channel
Cheers Nathan! :)

Cheers Sean! It’s a very handy tool that’s for sure, hopefully a few may be inspired to use it!

Great vid. . . . . Seriously well engineered maybe over but can't wait for the next vid and finally the moving truck
Cheers Stuart! Can’t wait to drive this thing :)
Going to look good when finished
Thank you!

Thanks Aaron! Great suggestion as well.
Great job Richard...and friends, I'll send you a email soon mate, well done again. Seeya Rob

I have rolled a fj40 there wasn’t much left of the top i was lucky to survive it a roll cage or part roll cage is a must for sure
looking mint
Thanks Will!
Dude! This is the coolest thing ever 👏
Haha thanks mate. Just a steel tray though, nothing fancy!
Awesome job mate looks great 👌👍
Thank you!
Awesome rig mate and great vid!
Thank you 🙌🏽
tray looks soooo good man cant wait to see it painted. ;)
Thanks mate! Neither can I :)

Awesome episode mate, love ua work 👍🏼👍🏼
Thank you! :)
Looking good, looking forward to how you do lights and guards etc, I assume you will also incorporate some tie down eyes or points on the tray deck
Thanks mate, definitely planning on putting a few in!
A great series to watch, be both entertainment and educational. How do you work out the structural loads for the blue bar.
Estimating with real world scenarios!

Great Idea Daniel! Definitely will keep it in mind for when I build another one. Never to late to learn CAD!
If you move the band guides in closer to the cut it will cut straight
👌👌👌👌 great video
Thanks Matt!
Looks awesome mate, keep up the great content

HI! could you share main dimensions of the tray!! looks grate!
Looks awesome mate only thing I would have changed is made the deck timber 👌
Thanks mate, deck timber would look very nice!
Hey mate what CAD program do you use? Love the build it’s hugely helpful too thankyou!
Cool build bro ! Just when finishing off the checker plate floor put a run of sika flex or something on each of the supports just to stop it rattling.
Thanks Blake! I was just going to weld the whole thing down. That’s a really good idea if it was ally though!
I love this build 😍
Thank you!
How much thickness of the piece of iron which is the base for placing the back of the truck
Awesome
Cheers Matt :)
would you not consider countersunk bolts to fix your steel bed to the frame. full size access hatches if you will.
Hey Ron, not a bad idea at all. I guess with the canopy on it makes sense to have smaller access panels so they can still be opened rather than having to remove the whole canopy.

Exo cage or roof rack support? I don’t think internal cages are an option in vic. Yep it will be registered and I’ve been talking with an engineer.

Awesome work Richard, the proportions of the tray are spot on👌🏼 Also, how good are laser cut parts with relief cuts!! Keep up the great work mate 🤙🏻
Cheers Geoff, I love the laser cutter, the relief cuts make it too easy!
Loving the build mate. Is the cab going in for panel and paint or are you leaving it patina?
Cheers Shane, yep planning on doing the bodywork and painting it myself.
I dunno if this is a sin….. but you could use defender or series Land Rover tail lights and indicators. The are round and small.
Hah the car is too far gone for anything to be a sin. I’ll look into it.
who did the engineers report on the old cruiser
What cad system are you using? I like the print offs for design used!!
Using solid works. There are a fair few clubs and society’s you can join to get the student edition for a reasonable price!
Bro...
Please let me know the type of transmission you are using
Check out the build series mate, I go through it all!
Are you gonna haul bikes with this beast mate 🤙🏾🤙🏾🤙🏾
Haha potentially, would have to be the right trip!
Great work mate just wondering what cad software do you use?
Solidworks mate! There are a few cheaper legal ways to get the student edition, have a look on google :)
Why not ally sheet..?
Hi Richard.
What app did you use toe design the tray
Solidworks!
Thanks mate love your work 💪👌
Is there some we’re I could see all the steal sizes u used
Hey mate, using 65x35x3mm for the edging, 100x50x3 for the hoop and 40x40x2mm for the deck
@@DesignedandBuilt what mm checker plat u use
2mm
how much did the steel cost
Around $500
cost of building the tray?
Comfortably less than $1000 materials only including laser cut mounted
Great fabricating but way overkill for such a small tray , could have saved a heap of weight .
Could have for sure! My justification is that it's going to protect me in a roll over, safety first :)
Who keeps giving you the thumbs down?
Someone who doesn't like Barra T FJ 45/80s!
