  • Joe visits with Bob Erickson and his working donkey team at the 2021 Horse Progress Days event. He demonstrates three draft powered implements.
Bob Erickson of Westby, Wisconsin owns two teams of donkeys. He brought his newest team, 3 and 4 year old half sisters Alice and Vera, to HPD to participate in some of the demonstrations and to share his love and expertise with donkeys.
    He demonstrated with:
    Small French made walking plow
    Marathon vehicle from Weaver Wagons
New logging arch which he designed and build himself.
Bob talks with Joe about the custom collars (made by Broadhead Collar Shop) he has made to fit his donkeys. The anatomy of a donkey is different than a mule or horse, requiring a different fit in order to eliminate pressure and soreness and to get the correct line of draft.
At home, Bob mows, plows gardens, spreads manure, hauls firewood, gives buggy, wagon and sleigh rides, goes on wagon trains and camps with his donkeys.
bob talks a bit about the large rings he uses on the bit in order to control the donkeys better.
He has trained his donkey not to fear the long flowing dresses of his neighbor by hanging fabric from his clothesline near the donkeys.
We watch Bob and his team demonstrate a walking plow in the HPD field.
Bob explains his custom logging arch design and then demonstrates it for us.
We then see some footage of other demonstrations at Horse Progress Days.
    mowing
    stump carving
    horse pulling
team of 8 draft horses hauliong logs
    manure spreading
    mule team spreading manure
    8 horse sweep

    team of 6 mules plowing.

It is so good to see a person who thinks of his animals as family. The animals seem to appreciate Bob as much as he appreciates them.

I know horses but have never heard of mammoth donkeys… mules yes, donkeys no, so unless those of you who have them educate us on them, we don’t know… I think they are really fabulous! Who knew!? Not me for sure! Thanks for sharing them!!!♥️‼️☘️☮️😘

I had no idea what I was in for when I took a donkey class this past week with Bob at Tillers International. He was among the best teachers I'd had with animal power. The animals he'd trained were far better trained than I but Bob was an excellent instructor and inspiring. His inventiveness with creating or modifying equipment for purpose boggles the mind. His tips on training was good stuff. Among the many things I heard and saw demonstrated was, "setting up the conditions for success." Amazing man. Amazing animals. He put the 'team' into teamwork with donkeys in a very understandable way. All things being equal, I'm looking forward to working with the donkeys here in as many capacities as possible.

When I watched this I could easily see the Donkeys and Bob giving it their all. Totally into the task of plowing that’s the secret to all working together as a team. He can count on them and they can count on him! Loved the log pulling too. AWESOME VIDEO!

What's the difference between a donkey 🤔 and a muel? They are almost the same size right or wrong

A mule is a cross between a male donkey and a female horse. As with horses, donkeys and mules come in different sizes.

Enjoyed almost all of this video except the minor banjo music that accompanied the last part of the donkey demonstration. Annoying enough that I had to mute the sound. Sorry.
