Moreover, it forced me to have more questions than I had before. So I started to looking for someone who could explain it to me on RUclips. And no one did it as well as you did it. And now I understand why I couldn't get through what was written in the book. Because there ''would' in Future in the Past'' was explained wrong. There were only examples of conditions! I should say thank you because you're the number one teacher who explained that modal verbs don't have conjugations and the meaning depends on context. Therefore, I have to find meaning in a context. not in modal verb.

They are two different things. One is a past habit: "When I was young I would play football." and the other is a conditional to talk about a past regret: "If I had had time, I would have played more football." You can see the difference in the verbal tenses used. To talk about past habits we use 'would + bare infinitive', and to talk about a past regret we must use 'would have + participle'. I've heard some Americans on TV use 'would' in a unique way when they describe some events which occurred in the past, some time standalone events and some times sequential events (but not repetitive or habitual) .... For example- This is a standalone event.. "He offered him advice. But he would not listen to him".... This is sequential.."He walked up to his room.Then he would knock on his doors.Then he would go on to fight with him"".... I don't know if I heard it wrong..But if these types of statements are genuinely used,is this just an Americanism or is it normal everywhere in the Anglophone countries?

Your second example is somebody describing a habit in the past. You could also say "...he used to knock on doors..." I hope that helps!

If it was a one-off event I can't think of any English dialects that use 'would'. British and especially Australian English is famous for using the present perfect to talk about one-off events when telling stories, but I've never heard people using 'would'. Your example of "...but he didn't listen..." is perfect!

It's more difficult to practice speaking and listening when you don't have people to practice with, but you can always find a way. There are lots of tourists in Vietnam so try and find a way to talk to them. Or use the internet to find websites or Skype groups where you can practice with other people. Good luck and work hard!
Amazing class as always. No problem to understand it. But I have a question. I am not able to understad how the subtitles are generated. Not only in this class one can catch difference between what can be seen a heard. One small example: I hear 'subordinate clauses' and subtitles say 'subordinate courses' (time 8:23)
Hi! The subtitles are generated automatically by Google's AI, so they are not normally very accurate, depending on who is speaking and how fast they are speaking! To be 100% correct the subtitle have to be made manually, but I just don't have time!

Would and will as modals are a bit troublesome, but it is cool to use them, at least I feel so :) If I am not asking about past habits, how one should understand "Why would....?" or "What would...?" or "How would...? questions. Do they mean "Let's speculate about why or what or how"? And should we think of "would like", "would better" type combinations as being in the polite speech category?
It really depends on context. For example if you say: "Why would you eat pizza?" you could be asking somebody why they had a pizza habit in the past, or under what conditions they would eat pizza, or maybe they are being polite, or maybe they are talking about an imaginary hypothetical situation. Context is king!
Thanks for taking your time to answer! In the films sometimes I hear versions of "Why would someone do that?" when they are talking about a single event. And it is clear there should be a word instead of "did" there. You are very helpful.
Let's look at the two possibilities and their differences: 1) "Why did someone do that?" This is a question in the past simple about why somebody performed a specific action in the PAST. 2) "Why would someone do that?" Hi Daniella! You can't start to learn slang until you have the basics under control. But it's not necessary to study grammar either. If you don't like studying, just find somebody you can talk to who will CORRECT you when you are speaking. Pay them if you have to. Listen to their corrections and make changes. (I'll come back latter for a second question , the reason for this firts question is that in my first language I can find a solution to say this phrases with 2 differents tenses without changing the spacetime ,said in the past reported in the present to say the future ...but they have consequently not the exact same meaning ....) Christian will not help Maria - a prediction. Christian will not help Maria - a refusal. The same thing happens with 'would'. They have one word for the two different situations)) I have no clue why.
You can say 'were' or 'was'. 'Were' is a remnant of the subjunctive in English (which no longer exists: you cannot say 'I were' in any other situation), but now it sounds a little bit formal so in general people prefer to use 'was'. I hope that helps!

My doubt, you said "If I WAS hungry, I would eat a pizza.".. Should it be not "If I WERE hungry, I would eat a pizza"?..Please let me know.. :)
You can say 'were' or 'was'. 'Were' is a remnant of the subjunctive in English (which no longer exists: you cannot say 'I were' in any other situation), but now it sounds a little bit formal so in general people prefer to use 'was'. I hope that helps!
