  • This is by far the most interesting camera I have ever used. Its a digital camera from 2004 that STILL costs around $900 used. Is it worth the price in 2018? I think so.
    You can buy the camera here on eBay: goo.gl/N4wcuL

      @@GxAce FYI - The Epson R-D1 uses a rechargeable (Epson part No. EU-85). This battery is identical to that used in many other cameras (e.g. Fujifilm NP-80, Toshiba PDR-BT1, Ricoh DB-20, Kodak KLIC-3000), with one important difference: the capacity of the Epson EU-85 battery is 1500 mAh whereas the standard capacity of the other cells is 1300 mAh; however, higher-capacity (>1500 mAh) generic batteries can be found.

    Your videos 'almost perfect in many ways' besides the fine information you share, bring me a lot of "Saudade." An almost untranslatable Brazilian word - probably close to or for nostalgia for the "empirical experience" you usually discuss and embed in your photography and videos. In BORAT's words: "Big success!" especially if you are a millennial. Thanks, buddy.

    Very nice review, I remember this camera from 2004 and the unique needles. A bit expensive at that time for me. More recently, I had a M for a few years and got hooked on the RF system. I bought one RD1x after watching this Video. No regret so far, the 1:1 viewfinder is a unique experience as indicated in the video.

I've been bitten by the RD1 bug too lately and I'm not sure how, (just recently sold My old xt2 to get a brand new sd Quattro to fuel my poor man's medium format dreams) but I wanna sell some other unused gear and hopefully be able to buy an RD1 and 3 primes. Re battery life: the original Epson batteries weren't great in terms of life, but they weren't bad by 2004 standards... I'd typically carry three batteries and get about 250 shots each. None of the aftermarket batteries have anywhere near the same life, no matter what mAh rating is claimed on the label. Back in the day, the R-D 1‘s US product manager would follow some of the forums and answer questions -- owners could even phone him direct -- and he told me once that Epson selected the cells in its batteries not only for mAh capacity, but for low internal resistance, so that was another reason they lasted longer. I've been told that people in Japan can still find the Epson batteries thanks to the fact that the R-D 1X, which used the same battery, was in production until 2014!

    Used prices on these do seem a little silly at the moment...but I bought mine new when they first came out and still have it, so I feel like I've gotten my money's worth by now! The biggest drawback is that once you've gotten used to the 1:1 viewfinder and being able to shoot with both eyes open, even a Leica M seems like a bit of a letdown. A hybrid of the Epson's RF/VF, needle readouts, and control layout with the sensor and electronics package out of a Fuji X-Pro 2 would be an awesome thing to have...

  • @ScreenFiends
    @ScreenFiends 5 лет назад +5

    6MP at 300DPI print quality should get you excellent results at photos of roughly 10x7" print size. Pretty damn big. 200DPI will be way bigger still, and though technically not as detailed as a 300dpi image pictures that size are typically viewed from a distance and so you eyes resolving power can't tell the difference. Hell yeah this cam will have more than enough power for Instagram.

    I had one but the crop factor and rangefinder base length really killed it for me. The camera is pretty hard to shoot at wide open aperture settings especially on 50mm. Also I had to resort to using 21 and 28mm which weren't ideal... Leica's best glass is 35-50mm. Overall I replaced it with a M8 (now M240) and Leica M4 & m6 over the years. It was very nostalgic and tons of fun, very remniscent of those built-like-a-tank Bessa rangefinders
    Oh, subbed too!

    • @GxAce
      @GxAce  5 лет назад

      I’d say the Epson because of that awesome shutter advance. It also doesn’t have the sensor corrosion issue. I also love the 1:1 magnification on the Epson viewfinder.

      Nope. I like to show the potential and not just what the images look like SOOC. I really enjoy the color grading process.

    Fuji should build a new camera like this, with modern technology and the opportunity to get a repair. I really really like all about the rd-1, but there is no service anymore. So I have to use my other digital rangefinder until someone builds a new one which is worth to buy...

    I should have bought one of these a few years ago when I first found out about them. They were hovering around the 700-1000 range... now they're pushing $3k....

      @@GxAce yeah, I think they were around that 1K range for years. I originally looked into buying one of these when the M9 first came out to see if I could find a cheaper alternative. I ended up not getting one and now I never will.

    Almost won one of these last week on ebay for $550 but ended up chickening out and not getting it and I'm regretting it a bit. It's such a cool camera but I know I will still want to shoot actual film even if I have it and am going to keep that $600 to put towards a film leica m

    It's not beautiful; but I can't get over the "hybrid" nature of the controls of this camera.....beyond the Fujifilm stuff.....that wind lever is something else.....and ya it's so damn solid!!!!
