In academia, differences of opinion are respected as difference in perspectives, and generally it doesn't come to agreeing to disagree...agreement isn't important. But ideas are only ideas with freedom, which generally doesn't descent into dogma. There's an axiom about higher education, "A well-educated person can entertain an idea without accepting it." Lacking extensive experience with myriad varied ideas, too many lazy minds latch onto dogma as the easy option. Regardless, Jared Diamond isn't a crackpot and his views are only intended for consideration without acceptance. Whether his notions, his perspectives jive with yours, fine, otherwise that's what they are...food for thought, with no requirement for swallowing.
"Never let a good crisis go to waste" did NOT mean "let's learn from our mistakes". I don't think this guy is stupid which leads me to believe he's purposely deceitful, which is worse. Listening to some of his opinions, he's a political and social activist and writes to support his believes
