I'd take one of Dave's setups over a PLEK setup any day and the reason is simple. Dave takes the time to "looks for other problems" and usually fixes them if he doesn't stop and call the owner to present it to them. No "machine" can match or exceed what Dave provides.
genericspace I was against them at the beginning, now I want all my guitars plek’d. The machine can artificially age frets after a refret so they feel broken in. Don’t knock it until you try it, is what I’m saying here.
If you plek a guitar every fret is exactly the same, even when the bridge setup was the problem in the first place the frets are perfect after pleking and that’s bad?
Thanks. I just got a set of these for a Tele build. Excellent display of use of specialty tools. I'm not a fan of the shape of Grover bean buttons so I usually replace them with plastic vintage style since they have standard mounting. The stock buttons are also heavy pot metal (over 2 oz) if your into weight savings for what ever reason.
Ah, Grover Rotomatics. I put them on a short-scale Ibby and the difference between the new Grovers over the stock tuners is like night and day. I hate the “instructions” they give you but once you’ve figured out how to string them up, you’ll never want to use any other tuner again. Also when removing strings, when you turn the peg it’ll back off the inner cam and let you pull the string back out.
I was a CNC Mill machinist for almost 20 years as a kid, I almost bought a Plek machine when they first came out, but they were expensive as hell and I wondered about recouping my money? I guess they're about $20K now?
My SG standard has tuner holes like that..trying to fit tonepros tuners proving a nightmare with the new bushings..anyway back to the drilling, filling and filing!
A PLEK machine is a specialized CNC machine for stringed instruments. They basically put the instrument under string tension artificially and do a fret job and adjust the nut in one operation. Just like Dave said, with that machine, a luthier could possibly do other things while its running. That doesn't make it better than a skilled luthier, just more efficient.
My industry went CNC and other computer systems which cost a lot. The more they shifted that direction the more I make. The systems are great for the same routine things day after day. Anything not routine and anything the least bit out of that the cost went up exponentially. Lot of cubicle guys who make little. Those who know the ins and outs make a lot more now.
Plek is the best way to level frets and cut a nut, its perfect when it comes out. Joe Glaser has one, and there is one in Ohio and in Maryland near me, I build chepos the Pleking would cost more the the guitar's worth, so the tride and true method works for me.
I prefer the new’ish Kluson locking tuners. They replace the originals perfectly and my LP’s now stay in tune! That said, also have new Grover’s on a parts caster and they are top notch.
I checked out the plek. Pretty neat. Im not a musician of any sort but i feel like something like that, while super precise etc kind of takes some of the art and soul out of something that literally centers around art and soul. But maybe i have no idea what im talking about...
There's no art and soul in a bad fret job. It's a place where technology is our friend. Frets can still be cut, shaped, and installed by hand on custom guitars which involves lots of soul and art but for the upside of what precise fret heights do for guitar setup and playability it can't be compared. Pleking was never really done by luthiers, so it's not a job lost to a machine. It's purely a modern thing designed to make frets precise after installation.
I'm looking for someone to do some upgrades I have a chibson coming I'm a lefty so not a lot of options out there for me with the regular companies so I thought i'd try a chibson.
I don`t know if it`s OCD or I`m just a Dick... but when applying the glue boost why not start at the top and work down as not to lay your hand in the ones you just finished? not sayin` you DID lay yer hand in them but just as a precaution.
A gadget to get guitarist to spend more money to play better with no guarantee, a gimmick in other words, instead of practicing more, which doesn't cost anything
Damn you'd have to charge a lot to recoup the cost of the machine,... so why would you get a Chibson pleked ? By the time you add higher quality hardware and get a Chibson pleked you could be close to enough money to buy a Gibson
8:35 "Reverse the drill when you're pulling it out". Not unless you've got a follow up procedure to remove impacted material. Helical drills are mostly self cleaning in the rotational direction of cut, reversal can leave compressed wood cuttings in the hole. Gotta take care of our holes eh!
Chinese factories churn out counterfeit everything, guitars, designer clothes, shoes, anything that's worth more because it has a name brand on it. It's not like anyone inspects all that stuff.

My Gibson SG came with the fret ends all chewed up by the PLEK machine. Their QC isn't what is used to be ... The Plek Machines aren't on par with someone who knows what he's doing with the right jig and tools. The pleked guitars often need a second visit by a repair guy, cause a few weeks later it's not exactly the same. The process is still flawed and they often have to work on it after the machine is done. A repair shop owner near by also looked into it. (They're made here in Germany). It's either the way the guitars are fixed in the machine while they're leveling or in the measuring process. Something isn't accounted for. The other thing is the money. Some who bought want as much guitars as possible pleked to pay off the machine and start making money. It's like with laser eye surgery. It's something good, but only on a case to case basis. Some people shouldn't do it. Guitar's have their quirks and when something doesn't seem right while a good guitar tech is working on it, he/she/AH-64 will change the approach at that certain guitar. Maybe they improved a little during the latest iterations. There is still a lot of shit to do (setups, nuts, touch ups, broken crap, elecrtronics)...There is nicer work than doing fretwork.
I have been doing my own guitar work since I was 16 (I am now 58) and made a lot of mistakes but learned a massive amount, and still learning, from books videos and experience. I have bought 2 guitars which boasted PLEK fret work and I've been seriously unimpressed. Yes it could be that the people who "PLEK'd them did something wrong or the machines were out of tolerance or, or, or ............ but after an hour of my own work using simple tools and human care both guitars were transformed. Only 2 guitars BUT they represent 100% of my own personal experience - I smell a slight whiff of tech for tech's sake here and "KIng's new clothes". But I guess there'`ll be others who say this is sacrilege 'cos tech is our saviour - if so, apologies for offending your belief system :o)
Luthiers don't Plek, well it's not called that it's called dressing the frets and leveling the fretboard. But I'd rather do it by hand than trust a machine to possibly take off more than needed. But that's just my thoughts.😎👍🎸🎶
Doing a Plek job does not improve the tone and that is the primary issue with a Chibson....the wood used, the fretwire and the electronics all affect tone. Plek'ing a guitar will not improve that.
No thanks,,I'll stick to my Gibson's and Epi's. Didn't sound bad at low volume but where the Gibson shines is at high volumes, that chibson will squeal like a stuck pig and sound like shit unless you change out those cheap pups. I'm not going to bash on em' but by time you spend money for a set up and some quality pups and electronics you are in ltd,Epiphone, prs se territory and you get way better quality without the copy infringement. But that's just my 2 cents.
I'v had some poor ones also, the earlier chinese epi standards and sg's were pretty poor until about 2015 then the chinese qc got a lot better at least in my experience.I have a modded 2016 lp standard,SD jb/jazz pups and mojo tone electrics and i like it better than the Gibson lp studio's i'v had. It's probably the only guitar i wouldn't ever part with.
The part with Dave wearing the black gloves and holding the saw was truly terrifying!! Looked like he was ready to murder the Chibson

Love the fact this one says Chibson. The one I purchased has the word 'Guitar' in Gibson font.
Weston's Instrument's in Kanata , Ottawa area has a PLEK as well. He does a great job.
