Last October I had a long recovery from ankle surgery and I read Middlemarch - it was the perfect slow read for my very slow days. I listened and read at the same time so that I wouldn’t get lost in the language. Everyday I would visit my new friends in the quaint village of Middlemarch to see what was up that day.

    Middlemarch doesn't march. It unfolds.

Classic tomes like Middlemarch have their moments, I get it! Like Les Miserables, you gotta look out for changes in pacing, discursive ramblings, you know the drill. You wanna get inside Montaigne's head, read his entire collection. One of my favourite essays is 'On Cannibals.' He was ahead of his time, very modern

Shakespeare supposedly owned a copy of his essays.

I loved Hamnet! I also read The Marriage Portrait, which was the author's next book, i believe. I enjoyed that too - interesting plot.

Hello, I recently started watching your videos, and your book recommendations are really good. I went book shopping 2 weeks ago and bought most of the books you recommended. The signature of all things is a wonderful book as it covers really good topics such as spirituality and science. Bit of a long read😊.

Going from the action packed and fast paced Count Of Monte Cristo to the very slow paced Middlemarch is a shock to the system.😁. Middlemarch is a reread for me so I was expecting it. The difference of the two is like night and day, but they have one thing in common. Both are 5 star reads for me.

Greetings Carolyn, I just finished "George: A Magpie Memoir" by Frieda Hughes (daughter of Sylvia Plath and Ted Hughes) and adored it, and am now reading Upton Sinclair's "The Jungle" for book group. Your book selection today looks absolutely lovely!

Right now I'm reading Wandering Stars - Tommy Orange's new book. Sorry if you've mentioned this before - but if you like stories about the effects of war on people - The Seas by Samantha Hunt is a weirdish book that I had mixed feelings about, but has really stuck with me, and one if its main characters is an Iraq war veteran. I honestly don't think I loved the writing or story telling style, but the themes and the tone were really great.

Maggie O'Farrell and me don't jive! 😭 Her prose is beautiful but I find her works boring. I DNFed Hamnet :/ I liked the Marriage Portrait when I read it, but it just faded for me. So sad because i wanted to like her

I'm also a massive mood reader, so never fully gel with a monthly TBR. However, since March is Easter, I've added 'Bunny' by Mona Awad to my stack to read this month XD ;-p

I'm a mood reader too, but I'm trying not to be - mostly because I waist a LOT of time trying to match my mood with a book and months go by where I end up reading nothing. So I'm making my way through the classics and working on my discipline rather than my disposition. It's hard but it's working. Just started Sense and Sensibility!
Also, I know I've said this before, but I love your voice and I need you to make audiobooks.

Hi Carolyn, as you enjoy war novels, an absolutely astounding one is ‘Testament of Youth’ by Vera Brittain it deals with the sociatal shifts that came to England through and in the wake of the First World War. It is written by a someone who lived through that tumultuous time and describes her own experiences and the experiences of her family. Her family were relatively wealthy her brother was at Oxford and she also hoped to go there. Then came the start of the war the foundations of all their lives were utterly shaken and those halcyon prewar days were never to return. It is deep, touching, heart breaking and so much more. Something within me shifted as I read this exceptional book. I can’t recommend it highly enough. It is an experience. Claire B England

hello Carolyn! I was wondering if you read The Master and Margarita in the end? Or did you already talk about it somewhere and I just missed it? As for my TBR I´m thinking of rereading this MASTERpiece😄 but for now it´s Lolita´s turn (also a reread for me), How about you? are you planning on reading anything by Nabokov?
