  • Deremer Studios presents St Augustine From Above - A cinematic journey through the history and beauty of St Augustine, FL - through the lens of our drone. We even managed to capture an epic sunset or two along the way...
Located along Florida's First Coast at the northern mouth of the Matanzas River, St. Augustine is the oldest continuously inhabited European settlement in the United States. Founded on September 8, 1565 by Spanish admiral Pedro Menéndez de Avilés, the favorable location and highly defensible position made it the perfect capital for Spanish Florida - an honor the city would hold for over 200 years.
The linchpin of St Augustine's defenses, and after no less than nine wooden forts rose and fell, construction on the coquina- walled Castillo de San Marcos began in 1672, making it the oldest masonry fort in the United States.
Offering an all-together different type of protection, the 165 ft. St Augustine Lighthouse and its first order Fresnel lens has been guiding sailors safely ashore since its completion in 1874. Still standing today, the iconic brick lighthouse replaced a 52 foot coquina beacon from 1824 - the first in Florida.
Just four years after the modern light's completion, the person most responsible for St Augustine's ornate spired skyline would first arrive in the historic city in 1878. Arriving with his wife to celebrate their belated honeymoon, Henry Flagler, the co-founder of Standard Oil, saw much potential in this bustling little historic town. In order to transform the sleepy city into a posh winter retreat for wealthy travelers, Flagler embarked on two major projects - the expansion of the rail system and the building of a grand hotel. Completed in 1888, the opulent 540-room Ponce de Leon Hotel represented more firsts for the city of St Augustine; most notably the first hotel to extensively use poured concrete for construction, employing the area’s supply of coquina, this time as aggregate. With its old-world charm and luxuries such as electric lights and Tiffany glass, the hotel and its town quickly became world famous. Today, the famous hotel is enjoying a renaissance as the centerpiece of Flagler college - a private university begun in 1968 wit a focus in over two dozen majors in a wide range of subjects.
Yet even all this is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the history and beauty of the nation's oldest city.

My town is so beautiful hope it stays that way growth and construction are ruining it

Yeah - that's the hard balance. When a town is lovely it becomes desirable, and with the desirability can come some unwanted side effects along with positive growth. Growing pains for sure!
