      I'm someone who was pushed into the manager role because I was going above and beyond my role as an IC. Now, my team has expanded and I feel like this has become a role that has the goal post constantly moving. I was looking around for tips to gracefully go back to being an individual contributor now. My team loves me but I enjoy the technical work way more than managerial crap.

      @@SJ-nu1ou Peter's Principle... Almost all companies worldwide have this problem. Essentially management and HR has failed.

    Leveraging the mystery role in the middle is a huge insight. Great steps to transition from individual contributor to manager.

      Ah, yes. Most managers know it but many individual contributors take some time to realize that middle step is the key.

    I am an individual contributor now, aspiring to become a manager. I can see that I can directly apply what you have suggested. Thank you for the great videos. I'd like to know more.

    Project manager and I think it’s really challenging to show leadership on that level too.

    I am trying to improve my communication skills so I can move to managerial role. I was "project manager" at one point and now back to individual contributor. Thx!

      Thank you for sharing. I have another video (an older one) that is about how *_how to talk like a leader_* . It has some similar ideas but speaks more generally about what leadership looks like. It might be helpful.

    This is an amazing video. Exactly how my team works. Can you also do a video focussed on how to take initiative/be a self starter/maket yourself within your team and with other teams? Thanks!

    Hi Alex, Great video! Thanks for explaining the differences so clearly. I am in the mystery middle currently and I like this role. But sooner or later I have to make a decision to go for either IC or Manager. If I think about my personality then I am more aligned to be a team manager but I want to keep building my skills as well to be relevant. I am totally confused right now!!!

    being an IC is not good option for long term career? what if i cannot find opportunities within current organization. it seems to be more harder to be manager if we change the job, position. i am stuck at middle of my career progress,

    • @alexanderlyon
      @alexanderlyon  3 года назад +1

      If you like being an individual contributor, then it's a 100% great career. If, however, you want to grow into a leadership position, then you'll have to be at some point apply for open positions either within your organization or for external positions. You'd have to weigh all of the costs and rewards of those decisions for your specific situation. In either case, managing projects (that middle position) is always a good career development step.
