Plus, back in that time there was no animal protection agencies, massive numbers of horses died in every war. Lots of people died in those wars too, ancient wars were absolutely brutal and unforgiving.
Because everything about horses in war is expensive. You not only have to breed and maintain a huge amount of horses for combat but also feed them as your army marches. That's a huge amount of extra food and water to take along, literally tons and tons. You also got to train people to ride them which can take way longer than just giving them spears and teaching them formations.
