It's such a little thing, but I love that every Muppet performer gives their characters an "idle pose" when they're not talking, like Oscar resting his head in his arms over the table. It makes them feel that much more vivid--they're not silent because they're an inanimate puppet, they're silent because they just don't have anything to say right that second.
This is funny that you mention that because jim henson would do subconscious movements with kermit in interviews when he had kermit on his arm. I always appreciated that about jim
I love BOTH characters but Oscar is more....relatable as a grown up. You could almost invite Oscar out for a beer, but not too many because you never know how rowdy he'd get.
When Sesame Street started in '69 I was 5. Our teacher would roll in this huge Sony Betamax machine with a TV and show us episodes of this new "edu-tainment" show for kids. Truly revolutionary.
I have watched "I Am Big Bird" on Netflix I think 4 times now since I first saw it. It's just such a wonderful story and it makes me so happy. Caroll is such a wonderful man!
It's so interesting to me how Caroll had a stutter but neither Oscar nor Big Bird do, even when speaking extemporaneously. There's something to how he doesn't see himself as them, but just as what brings them to life.
When I was a young child I carried around a big bird Doll that was almost as big as I was It was my favorite toy and I never slept a night without it until i hit puberty
Friends of mine found a laptop in the garbage. After I worked on it plus a RAM upgrade and a new hard drive and Windows reinstalled, it got named Oscar and has an Oscar the Grouch wallpaper.
Good interview. Oscar was hilarious. The new Big Bird voice unsettles me. I know it can’t be exact but the other muppets new voices seem close to what they were. Oh well I got the originals during my childhood so I’m happy
Another Gem from my childhood who's light has dimmed. I was lucky enough to snag a handmade Muppet from FAO Schwarz before they shutdown. When Jim passed it was the first celebrity that I felt a real loss for... I'm glad that Oscar and Big Bird will have Kermit to show them around up there. In that great Muppet Show in the sky.
Carroll's voice, vocally, not personality wise, is closer to Oscar. . Oscar *DID* take a bath once, in a sketch called "Do the duck" an ensemble song with Ernie, . 🎼 *"Hey ! All you grouches sing. Yeah make the bathtub ring!"* 🎼
heh heh heh. Isn't it incredible how your attention automatically shifts to Oscar when he is talking, and you don't even notice the man behind the puppet. Same thing in interviews with Frank Oz where he would bring out Cookie Monster or Fozzie. That is a testimony to the life that Caroll and the others brought to those puppets.
I was just thinking if Sesame Street actually had the credits on while the show was starting; Caroll would of been more recognizable but as a child watching it I never watched the credits at the end.
Once the puppeteer dies they should retire the puppet no one can sound like them big bird sounds like hes underwater plugin his nose with his thumb up his but I hate it not big bird
Oh no. Just before it was discovered Jian was violent towards women. Considering pedophilia "only" hurts 90% of the children that experience it, 99% of grown women hate non consensual violence. Carol Spinney is so lucky; didn't die in Challenger, his house assistant killed a jogger and now he got interviewed by Jian Gomeshi. But Bid and Oscar still survive within Carol Spinney. Too bad I missed him when he visited Killarney Secondary about 4 years ago.
Rest in peace Caroll Spinney 😭🙏
Rest In Peace, Mr. Spinney... Thank you for making my childhood better. You will never be forgotten!
I still can't believe he has gone. A huge part of my childhood. 😢

gone to join Jim Henson, missed forever
And Richard Hunt and Jerry Nelson
It ain’t easy being green
Say hi to Jim for us, buddy. Thanks for all the wonderful memories with Big Bird and Oscar.
oscar looks like a kid who's been drag along to parent's book club meeting.
He looks bored shitless 🤣🤣🤣
He looks like I felt when my mom made me go with her to get her hair done
Big Bird has always been my favorite Sesame Street character. I hope to meet Caroll Spinney one day.
Shame it won't happen now 😔
Love you, Caroll. Thank you for being such an enormous part of my childhood. You seemed like a lovely human being.
I love BOTH characters but Oscar is more....relatable as a grown up. You could almost invite Oscar out for a beer, but not too many because you never know how rowdy he'd get.
he did it for 50 years like he said 🥺
I cried soooo hard when on Sesame Street they told him “ Big Bird ,Mr. Hooper’s not coming back”😥
Now Big Bird and Mr. Hooper are together again
When Sesame Street started in '69 I was 5. Our teacher would roll in this huge Sony Betamax machine with a TV and show us episodes of this new "edu-tainment" show for kids. Truly revolutionary.
What a great man... I played Oscar in a kindergarten play, he was my favorite character... be at peace brother
Thank you for this interview and thank you to this amazing man for 50 years of joy
Oscar just chillin during the interview...lol
I have watched "I Am Big Bird" on Netflix I think 4 times now since I first saw it. It's just such a wonderful story and it makes me so happy. Caroll is such a wonderful man!
Agreed. May Caroll rest in eternal peace.
He is waiting for his wife Debra by the raspberries.
It's so sad they they have both, in different ways, died. I miss them both.
seeing Oscar so silent looks weird.
It's so interesting to me how Caroll had a stutter but neither Oscar nor Big Bird do, even when speaking extemporaneously. There's something to how he doesn't see himself as them, but just as what brings them to life.

Friends of mine found a laptop in the garbage. After I worked on it plus a RAM upgrade and a new hard drive and Windows reinstalled, it got named Oscar and has an Oscar the Grouch wallpaper.
Puppeteer is the first job I remember wanting to be. ❤
Can't wait for the film to come out on DVD.
It's on Netflix!

What a life. I want to be as fulfilled as this man was.
R.I.P. You Will Be Missed You Was My Favorite Person On Sesame Street Big Bird and Oscar Were My 2 Favorites R.I.P. Carroll Spinney
His natural voice is like Bird’s, just like Henson’s is like Kermit.
I'm surprised he lived as long as he did. He will be missed.
Oscar is my spirit animal
I didn't know Caroll's dad was Canadian too.

Yeah, but by then the mud, mold & moss had been caked on for so long that it has dried & been impossible to get off.
Kudos, Jian on this outstanding interview with a remarkable human and his excellent filmmaker. Smiled straight through it.
RIP Caroll. Say hi to Mr Hooper for us
I loved the documentary
I think this would be one of the best jobs ever!!! Classic!!
it's a damn shame that he passed away a few weeks ago this month R.I.P. Caroll Spinney
Just LOVE this man!

He looks great for his age
Absolute legend R.I.P.
Miss you sir. Pardon the host.

The First Episode Of Sesame Street Oscar Was Orange Before
In 1968
5 Paw Patrol folks hated this video....
Cant believe hes dead this year this month
💖💖💖
i think oscar has narcolepsy
$200 a week in 1969 sounds pretty good to me ! That's the total amount Sylvester Stallone got paid for his first movie ! :D
Oscar is clearly unimpressed.
Brian Henson take over for his father
🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Rots my guts to see any Ghomeshi footage
This isn’t about him
Go Sinead O' Connor.
What
Marry me carroll
Oscar, why are you such a grouch?
Once the puppeteer dies they should retire the puppet no one can sound like them big bird sounds like hes underwater plugin his nose with his thumb up his but I hate it not big bird
Is it me or does he look stoned?
DONXMEN Oscar is definitely stoned:)
MadWeiner but Big Bird is HIGH AF!

Paolo what’s consensual violence?
@@ourtravelingzoo3740 non-consensual violence is what he meant
And Big Bird was ugly
RIP
