I found Z2 improved my cycling massively. Years ago I struggled to do long distance with stomach issues and exhaustion. So I did a lot of long Z2 riding, which included quick cadence and fasted. I often rode 2-3 hours fasted at Z2. It made a huge difference, great adaptations. This year I rode the PCR, 2000km with lots of tough climbs - I'm now in my 60's btw. Z2 does work.
Thanks again Coach Scott! You have encouraged me to read and study more on mitochondria proliferation and electron transport chain. It makes more sense the more I read. One of the coolest things that increasing mitochondria does is during a race or tough club ride is when you over cook it the recover time to get back in the fight is so much quicker. I know, I should be smarter than to be in that position but be honest who doesn't go there.
Thanks coach, I’ve been following your videos on FTP testing and training guidelines and in the last month my FTP has gone from 180 watts to 200 watts (2.8 to 3.1 watts/kg!)
Zone 4 Speaking :P This Sunday I go for thing from your other video, a big goal I never done before. 100km ride , its going to be tuff after only being 5 months into biking :)
Feel is all you need. When I crap out at 1hr and really need to slow wayyy down to make it to the pub stop, thats my FTP and recovery zone. If I can happily cruse past the pub and wait till the end of the 2-3hr ride, i've been in zone 2. Trouble is I have no flat rides near by so its functionally an average including high intervals. I'm stuck with interval training as there is no zone 2 possible when puffing up the steep ones at least until I get skinny.
Ive found zone 2 really difficult on my road bike where i live. It's just so hilly. However ive found if i get my electric bike out and stay in mode 1 then usually i spend most of the ride in zone 2
Plus for him, Zone 2 is "when I’m fatigued it’s like 140 or 145. When I’m a bit more fresh, maybe around 150 to 155" and he can maintain "320 to 340 watts" at that same heart rate. As in most things, it's all relative.
