This & Razor Blade Alley could easily be greatest hits. Too many great songs! They must have the record number of compilation albums for any band from the 70"s & 80s!

America definitely lost out on this part of history. I'm Listening to all of these songs for the very 1st time ever. of course over here, we only heard the most popular hits, Our house it must be love. That was about it. It is almost surreal that for 40 years I've been without this great music. Also extremely rare to see a band stick together this long and still be creative. I am in awe!!! And definitely pissed that this music wasn't played here. :(

@@robhingston Most definitely; original intos, verses, bridges, etc. in all their songs. How in hell did this group of ragamuffins pull themselves together enough to care so much about music!!? :) :) So proud of how kids back in the day used to have goals regardless of their status in life. LOVE LOVE MADNES!

Listening to this song even when I was a kid used to remind me of some of those British sitcoms of the early 70s. Just the mood of it, and the way the lyrics paint pictures in your head. (!)

This didn’t get much exposure in America as far as I know and the only reason I found it is because I’ve been going down a rabbit hole of No Doubt and Ska history and read that Gwen and her brother listened to this and were inspired by it. It fits. They were, much like myself as a kid, interested in things that weren’t “popular” and as I said, Madness wasn’t popular in the US. Anyway, over time I’ll be checking out more of this great music.

God just looking at the cover takes me back! I loved this album, this was when a bunch of mates could start a band and sing what they wanted about everyday life. The lyrics on this song are particularly clever and funny.

Nice man George, newsagent on the corner,
Not very rich, but never any poorer,
Jaunty old George, a happy sixty-three,
Not very tall, but healthier than me.
He whistles timeless tunes as he saunters down the street,
Springs in his legs and elastic in his feet.
But in the middle of the night,
    He steals through your garden,
    Gives your hosiery a fright,
    And doesn't say pardon.
    As soft as a breeze,
With an arm full of underwear,
    On his hands and knees,
    Dreams about the knicker scare.
Hello there George, newsagent on the corner,
How's the old car, yes the climate's getting warmer,
Chatty old George as you get your morning paper,
Read about the knicker thief, underwear taker.
Bids you 'Good day', as you wander out the door,
Never closes early, always cleans the floor.
But when darkness hits the town,
And there's washing on your line,
    Get your knickers down,
    Before the dreaded sign.
    When the clock strikes eight,
And you're snuggled up in bed,
He'll be at the garden gate,
    Filling underwear with dread.
Nice man George, newsagent on the corner,
He was closed today, maybe gone to mow the lawn,
I had to go further down the road to get me current bun,
Hello - Isn't that George on page one?
No it couldn't be, but yes it is,
Difficult to see from these photofits.
    But they are after him,
Of that you can be sure,
They've called him on the phone,
    They've knocked on his door.
    A-But he's gone away,
Gone to stay with some mates,
    He got the papers early,
    And saw his own face

Wish I could use this song, and others, to teach little ones how to read. Music and lyrics are the best way to learn! But, of course, the part about the underwear thief a bit inapropes.

They're not really a ska band. They developed their own sound immediately after releasing The prince on Two tone. Called "the nutty sound" A mix of all-sorts with some Ska influence.

@@leegardiner7916 Spot on. Madness being a 'Ska band' is one of the music industries greatest myths. They were influenced by all sorts of bands, yet ultimately sounding like something else. More influenced by Roxy Music than Prince Buster.
