      The Halo Infinite material system is incredibly flexible and customizable, like you can do all sorts of crazy things without having to make any new texture assets or anything.
      Too bad they don't let you use any of that stuff in-game...

    This is by far the best animated version of RvB yet. My only gripe is the use of Reach models, were there not any classic CE MK V models available?

    • @IrrelevantNonFilms
      @IrrelevantNonFilms Месяц назад +2

      Depends on what you mean by "classic";
      The original Halo CE models were of course available, but I didn't have the means to make them look exactly like they did in the Halo 1 engine, and half-assing the look was simply something I'm not comfortable with. The anniversary Mark V looks... bad, in my opinion, Halo 3 did not have a way to recreate Mark V to an acceptable degree of closeness (and I don't really like the Halo 3 rendition of the helmet regardless), and Halo 4 and 5's models are just bad and/or ugly (and Halo 5 wasn't even out when I made the first episode).
      So, seeing as the Halo Reach armour is supposed to be the actual Mark V suits in a different art style, it seemed to me to be the obvious choice. Plus, I just really like how Halo Reach looks in general.
      If I were to start over from scratch, I would likely dedicate myself to faithfully recreating the look of the Halo 1 engine in Blender or do the same realistic style, but with high quality and authentic Mark V models, which I know do exist now.
      The Marcus Lehto model, while fantastic, is a bit oddly proportioned and lacking in certain details for me. Plus, it's not set up to use the highly customizable Halo Infinite shaders, which means I'd have to painstakingly hand author custom textures to allow for color changing, which is quite the task for my general lack of texturing skill and the lack of source high-poly models needed to generate the various data layers for use in a program like Substance Painter.
      The new Halo Infinite model for the Mark V armour is, generally, pretty fantastic. It's exactly what 343i should've been doing since Halo 4. I use its arms, helmet, and boots in the later episodes, but I could not commit to the chest piece, simply because its overall hugeness tends to get in the way of a lot of things, and I don't really like how they've altered the shape of the chest piece to have a ridge instead of just being smooth like the original model seems to imply.
      So, it's all a bit of a compromise. To be honest, I would one day like to go back and re-render all the episodes in pure Reach Mark V, pure Halo Infinite Mark V, and maybe the original models in a faithful recreation of the Halo 1 renderer if I can make it work. Maybe once I finish the season 1 episodes in year 2135 or something.

      @@IrrelevantNonFilms dude, first of all, thanks for taking the time to write all of this.
      Second, I agree with you for the most part, since CEA had dinosaur arms and made the Chief look fat (maybe for Grif!) and H4 and 5 sucked too. Infinite’s, while the best one yet, kinda looks very chonky. So I guess I see why you ended up using the Reach chest, but at least you used the classic MK V helmet in the later ones!

    • @IrrelevantNonFilms
      @IrrelevantNonFilms Месяц назад +1

      @@ChefandTheArbistor Yeah, it's always a struggle when I see that beautiful giant mark V backpack on the infinite model, and I'm like "but maybe it could work..." but then I see that chest piece and how big it is around the trapezius area, and, y'know. If someone kitbashed the original backpack onto the reach chest, I'd probably use that in an instant.
      If I'm also quite honest, one way to look at the Reach armor (and art style) in the context of Red vs Blue is that the more grounded and gritty military aesthetic serves the military-industrial complex commentary that much of the series has. The Reach Mark V just kinda looks more, "Recruit", to me? It has the same effect as soldiers with plastic bike helmets seen in things like Metal Gear Solid 4, where all the soldiers are super cheap disposable fodder, much like the simulation troopers in RvB.
      That's just one take, though, and not even one I necessarily share. I believe I mention it in another reply somewhere but over the years I've come to realize how much of the humour in the earlier seasons is derived from it being a video game, and attempting to recontextualize that humour with _gritty military sci-fi realism_ comes off as a bit, odd.
      But hey, art is all about open interpretations.

    • @ChefandTheArbistor
      @ChefandTheArbistor Месяц назад +2

      @@IrrelevantNonFilms the one thing I think RvB ISN’T known for is being realistic and gritty. It’s literally set in one of the most colourful FPSs of all time. Which is why I think Reach’s art style just doesn’t fit RvB.
      Y’know, I really don’t mind Infinite’s MK V, and would honestly probably prefer to see it in this animation. It’s a bit chunkier than it was in CE, but it adds to that ‘tank on legs’ look that Mjolnir has had. But, at the end of the day, it’s your project. Do whatever works best for you and what you see fits.

    • @IrrelevantNonFilms
      @IrrelevantNonFilms Месяц назад +1

      @@ChefandTheArbistor Like I said, just one take, and not even one I'm completely on-board with (Though my description isn't particularly well articulated), hence why I made the armor super, super brightly colored and shiny as hot wheels spectraflame when that really makes no sense from... _any_ logical perspective. Much of the humour, in the CE seasons at least, is built within the context of Halo CE's colorful and clean aesthetic. The earlier episodes I added a ton of extra props and details to the bases, because at the time I was going for "but what if all the things implied to be around the base were actually there?", but I've slowly stripped back those props over time because I realized, y'know, what the _joke_ is. I guess what I'm doing now is trying to recapture kind of the "vibe" of CE (Had to keep those bright orange cliffs, no exceptions) with the more detailed and physically accurate models of Halo Infinite. It's a complex balancing act where most of my decisions are based on what I think looks nice.
      And to clarify, I was not trying to say RvB is realistic and gritty, only that a lot of the jokes from the series can be basically summed up as "Being in the army sucks", and I think by making the visuals more grounded and familiar to the actual military, those jokes could be made more effective, possibly with an underline of "it's the future but basic problems with the military still exist". Humour is, of course, _extremely_ subjective and that change might not pay off at all for some people. I don't really have a final big statement to make about this, I just think the debate is interesting. Ideally, of course, I'd love for there to be a remade version of RvB for everyone's specific tastes and preferences, and that serves what the series means to them, but alas I can only truly create the version of RvB that's for me.
      I guess.

      I actually agree (in most places), I could've spent more time manually tweaking the headbobs to better match the dialogue. Having a 120ms delay when recording the mocap didn't particularly help either, as well as the smoothing filter I applied to the recorded motions to clean up the jitter.
      All things to keep in mind for the next one, I suppose!
