Thank you for the practical instruction and educational video. We will definitely be adding a number of these to our Urban Oasis in Fort Wooster Park, New Haven, CT, USA. Since the Park authorities don't officially allow us to create ponds or "water features" we are creating "swales" that are like vernal pools - and these small lagoons will help too. Great idea.
Hi Jack. Yes, that should work. The small entrance way will reduce the risk that it dries out completely whilst leaving a way out for the hoverflies to emerge. Add a few sticks to make sure it's easy for them to climb out on and periodically check on the water level and it should work well.

Thanks for engaging with the channel. It sounds as though you have found a great way to get around some tight restrictions, well done!
Great little habitat, thanks for the idea!
What a fantastic introduction into hoverfly lagoons and Wendy couldn't have made it clearer, an excellent video
Thank you for your lovely feedback
Well done! We'll make some ourselves now! Thank you!
I hope you enjoy making them
If you bore out a cavern type in a massive bit of log/wood then filled back in with only small tunnel left..?
