Reebok was a terrible buy, they were better off buying New Balance. Or transform Reebok into a true lifestyle brand and none of this workout/crossfit crap.
@@casualsuede I still believe the conspiracy theory that Adidas wanted to butcher Reebok to boost the Adidas brand. It would make sense and it actually played out for them. Reebok was a major opponent of Adidas. Most people don't realize that Reebok was as big as Adidas and at some point even BIGGER than Adidas in the 90s. Very glad that Reebok has a new ownership now. I already feel like the brand is experiencing a slow renaissance. Hopefully it will be as successful as it was back in the day

I think a lot of these videos are US centric, because Adidas has always been big worldwide, especially in South America and Europe. Under Armour has never been a “big” make in Europe. Always been Adidas and Nike.
As a fan of Bayern Munich, a German football club that Hainer now runs, this video has been realization of how poor his management really is even when he was at Adidas
Excellent analysis. It’s amazing to me that Hainer didn’t hyperfocus on existing Adidas and Reebok users and on what would make the product better for them. Not entering e-commerce early was arguably the biggest mistake made followed by paying such a high premium for Reebok.
The e-commerce mistake was the biggest and most head scratching of all... Also the creation of brands like Adidas Neo which sponsored Justin Bieber was weird. You have originals already, why having a youth brand just for remakes of originals models?
I love Ultraboost shoes and they are still great but the reality is boost midsole is now outdated. The latest UB shoes are quite heavy and much firmer than the original UB, i.e. not the best in terms of comfort.
comfy soft soles are bad for your feet i tried barefoot walking after years of boost and my feet muscles were aching cause they were way to weak and i had a lot of stability problems that led to an ankle injury i would honestly stick to something more of the middle of the pack not too soft but not too hard either
People need to realize that Boost/Yezzy era was just that, era. People in North America should open their eyes to see that Europe has always embraced Adidas. Superstars, Stan Smiths, Gazelle, Samba, Campus, Forum, Rivalry, Top Ten, etc are signature Adidas staples. Not just Boost and Yeezy, when you get older you look for comfort and style. I switched over from Nike to Adidas back in 2008.
This is a great documentary! Thank you very much. For me Adidas was always with Nike at the top, but its interesting to see, that this direct competition was not always this close.
It can really only be understated imo, how much value and growth Kanye West has brought Adidas as a brand. Not just because of his name and photos, but because of his designs. No matter what you think of him as a person, and his politics aside - He's a creative powerhouse. And even though he has had a few misses (or a lot, depending on who you ask) ...that's to be expected when your design work is so far away from the norm. But when he swung and finally hit a home run... Oh man! I mean, not only does it portray Adidas as a forward-thinking and trend-setting brand as a whole, but suddenly you'd see 60+ year old grandmas wearing Walmart copies of his Yeezy 350 shoes.

A great video about Adidas! The company went through a great transition. Great video. I 100% agree. They do need another visionary. For example, the direction to push UltraBoost to performance running shoes was and still is a terrible idea. People love the UltraBoost for the comfort and/or fashion. But Boost technology just can't compete with the modern foams out there in the market. It's too heavy and not as responsive. Even the vast majority of Adidas running shoes in the market right now have switched away from Boost and into LightStrike (and LightStrike Pro). UltraBoost 21/22 and even the monstrosity that is the 23 version are all heading in the wrong direction. The focus should be put back to lifestyle. They are doing that somewhat with the original model, but new models should also be lifestyle.
What are you talking about dude Nike and Hoka garbo foam don't last nearly as long it can't even handle some wet road. I do 10 miles a day on ultraboosts, 3 of them are running these bad boys last and last and last, stop pretending you can't work out in these
Recently we have seen certain brands have success with running shoes. I think that there are definitely profits to be made and it's easy to understand why Adidas would want to have a competitor. .
I remember buying Reebok shoes way back in 2014 and it was really nice to have a lifestyle atheleisure brand dedicated to comfortable walking that was not overpriced. Sambas and the various more comfortable shoewear versions of that are their most timeless, evergreen classic -- every 5 years the new generation realizes how cool they are -- the iconic black with white stripes ones
Thanks for the super interesting and easy-to-digest analysis. It looks like the history is repeating itself again in adidas. Would be really cool if you would make the next episode to analyze adidas situation from 2019/2020 onward
You're right, how can he be credited for things he inherited. If he could've brought Reebok to profitability before selling it off, he would've proved himself in my eyes.
They both have by far the best materials they can source from and impressive custom synthetics they each make that are above and beyond other companys.
This is only relevant in America and to Americans. Adidas has always been bigger and more coveted in Europe and the UK and Kanye West didn’t do a lot to change that. The most important person that Adidas have had on their payroll for the past decade is Lionel Messi. His nemesis boots are so popular the general release colourways of _millions_ of pairs sell out in minutes in Europe. As for fashion/trends I see most people in my area in Stan smiths, spezials, gazelle’s and sambas. 350’s were a thing for kids (and I mean children not adults) maybe 4 years ago but I never see them anymore. You might see some new balance and puma but you only ever really see Nike on mums at the gym. My Dad has worn Adidas sambas with a full Beckenbauer since he was 16/17 and when he wears through his current lot he’ll go get some more and he’s almost 70. He doesn’t know who Kanye west is or what Yeezys are but he sure as hell knows the three stripes means quality. Adidas’s success has largely been down to the exceptional work they’ve done rereleasing older models/styles at a fair price point and at high enough quantities that they are attainable by your average person. Boost actually probably lost them money overall (it’s very heavy and isn’t as mouldable as other cushions limiting its functionality severely) and it’s one of the reasons they pivoted away from it so hard toward cheaper and more functional foams like adiprene and adiplus.
@@burrybondz225 didi you read the comment? for me as a brazilian, nike actually could make sucess in dominating our market, but mainly because of its 1996 deal with nike and lifetime deal with r9, in spite of that, adidas has never left our market nowadays having more clubs than nike itself (and its been like that for years). The point is that football alone can make insane amounts of revenue, since the world cup final has almost ten times the viewers of a superbowl final, even the champions league final has 3 times the viewers of a superbowl final, and this number would double if compared to nba finals as a whole, which means that usa market was an unnecessary goal, the problem with adidas revenue are mainly cause the prices are lower than nike in most of things
Ultraboosts and NMDs are so comfortable to wear around. Hainer may have made some horrible mistakes but he's got my respect for creating these amazing brands.
Adidas was popular in Europe by having a stranglehold on sports supply and selling to fans. Reebok had a stranglehold on sports supply and a massive potential customer base of fans of those sports. So naturally they dumped all that for CrossFit. The depths of some peoples incompetence is mind blowing.
They may have saved Adidas, but I think they’ll be just fine now without Kanye and ultraboost being less popular. They have so many cool models that are unique and innovative, unlike Nike with all their retros. When everyone (the general public) gets tired of retros, they’ll wanna find something new, and Adidas definitely offers that.
Doubtful of that. The thing with the Nike retros is that they become classic silhouettes that work. While I wear addidas because they are the most comfortable tennis shoes for me, addidas has never looked good outside of yeezies. They need someone and a silhouette to associate with the brand.
It’s been 30+ years that Nike has cycled retroes. I promise you they will never die. In actuality that’s what Adidas been looking for in terms of a popular, staple shoe that they once had with Yeezys
@@aaronmontgomery2055 Yeah, even Adidas is quite comfy but in general its model never stood out for me. That's why i choose to buy Nike or even Skechers.
The quality is real man, keep it up. I needed this educational distraction to help me keep my head up. On a side note, I’ve always been a dedicated Yeezy fan; shoes, music, all of it. As of late it’s been kinda hard to but yet here I am!
for the potentially confused Asian watchers of the video, when the video says "Asia" it really means China. Football (or soccer for our American friends) is actually really big in Southeast Asia and Korea. It is only not popular in China, which I think is what the video is trying to refer to. Likewise, basketball is only huge in China. Other Asian countries definitely adopt it, but it's nowhere near the most popular sport in most Asian countries. I'm sure it's a honest mistake, but it's quite funny to hear these takes about "Asia" and then have the information to back it up stating China specifically. There are more Asian countries than just China y'know.
Wow what I video. I cannot believe that was 41-42mins of non stop information and yet I sat at the end thinking there was more to come when it was in present time LOL
my entire shoe collection is all adidas, they have such crazy designs and all their shoes are comfortable af compared to nike idk why their so slept on
Reebok Instapump and Asics Kayano series are by far the most comfortable shoes. The biggest problem with Adidas is it never caught the resellers market which Nike, and then New Balance and recently Asics is catching up.
that's it, adidas really needs a visionary, as nike has shown for the past year that sports and fashion go hand in hand, just see the soaring success of the nike dunks and jordans, while adidas is yet to launch a shoe as influential, people don't want to wear boosts anymore. They need an iconic silhouette that is timeless and marketed well
I did not realize how much my fitness life mirrored the success and failures of Adidas and Reebok. I won't go through each year, but it's retrospectively clear that marketting to me was working. 😂 I was an early adopter of the adidas casual shoe amongst my friends in 2004. I was a part of Crossfit in 2011-13 and wore Reebok. NB and another brand I'm blanking on now were my running shoes until the ultraboost in 2015, but I didn't stay there either. 😂 Either way, I've never been a fan of Nike because they never fit right for me.
The trend for Jordans and Dunks seems to be ongoing but Jordan is the main thing keeping Nike at the top. Every reseller video you see is Jordan and dunks yet they make so many other great shoes Air Max 1 Air Max 95 air Max 97 to name a few. Adidas appeals to a completely different market UK Football fans will wear adidas footwear and clothing. In Europe older guys are seeing the old adidas models continue to be released and are buying them to relive their youth. There is also a resurgence in New Balance for the resellers who are moving away from wearing NIke but continue to sell them for the big profits.
One of the great drivers of Adidas products were their designs. Even styles from 50 years ago. So when they reintroduced the Stan Smiths, the shoes were selling out at full retail. There was even a Boost version. The retro version even outsold the original run from the 70s. Moving forward, the Adidas/Gucci line will drive sales worldwide. Nothing new, as Adidas has partnered with Porsche design 20 years ago. Reebok as a brand will do great into the future as well. As long as the new owners keep marketing that brand of shoes as a trending innovative sportswear company.
I personally vibe a lot more with adidas these days. I like their designs a lot more these days and buy way too many of their clothes and shoes. Especially in their online store, which has the nice free shipping on orders over $50 and frequent sales. Reebok was just a silly move and adidas (and Hainer) could’ve focused more on itself in that time. Even if it was a surprise when I found out Adidas owned Reebok (like when the logo changed and I noticed the logo had 3 lines in it, I looked it up and realized). I loved their wave runner shoe as a child and would totally wear a yellow version of that shoe now!
amazing video! it would be good to form a community to centre these discussions on discord or twitter. I would love to talk with you on these subjects.
I think the ultraboost line contributed more to the comeback of adidas than the yeezy line did... are there sales numbers out there specific for the two?

Thanks for the super interesting and easy-to-digest analysis. It looks like the history is repeating itself again in adidas. Would be really cool if you would make the next episode to analyze adidas situation from 2019/2020 onward
You're right, how can he be credited for things he inherited.
If he could've brought Reebok to profitability before selling it off, he would've proved himself in my eyes.
unfortunately often credit people for stuff they inherited
Did you watch the video???
@@burrybondz225did you read the comment???
I am also surprised that Stan Smith is not mentioned, that shoe has become even acceptable office wear these days for many white collar jobs
True. If I did not know better, for me as a German Nike would be a minor brand and Adidas the major brand. I don't care about US American sports, too.
Just was talking about your Hermes video today! Love this channel, looking forward to the vid.
bro this content is so good
This day just got 50% better ,may go for a run! Love your videos !
Ultraboosts and NMDs are so comfortable to wear around. Hainer may have made some horrible mistakes but he's got my respect for creating these amazing brands.
Reebok is an example of why the phrase "this is how we've always done it" irks me so much.
Yet another great in depth video thank you MMBA 🐐🔥
As of late it’s been kinda hard to but yet here I am!
having lost yeezy... I don't know how long they can pull ahead.
Update or after the dust settles.
Very in-depth video. ty
This didn’t age so well, they are back to square one 😅
*They **_(or should I say "we", since I am an ADDYY share-holder)_** are now recovering nicely after the 2022 fiasco with that nut-job Kanye West.*
for the potentially confused Asian watchers of the video, when the video says "Asia" it really means China. There are more Asian countries than just China y'know.
and one whose population is about to overtake the PRC
I mean I hate this video for it’s capitalist outlook but China is the leader of Asia and the greatest bulwark against American imperialism
do you have patreon/channel member
your videos are so good I wanted to support them to help keep them going
This is one of the best videos of company understanding i have ever fucking seen, all these official slides all the strategy talks insane
Love your videos. Super high quality and accurate
ModernMBA is the goat for real.
2:30 Is Reebok a British or American company? It was founded in Bolton, UK.
Wow what I video. I cannot believe that was 41-42mins of non stop information and yet I sat at the end thinking there was more to come when it was in present time LOL
my entire shoe collection is all adidas, they have such crazy designs and all their shoes are comfortable af compared to nike idk why their so slept on
Thanks for pronouncing Adidas correctly.
Reebok Instapump and Asics Kayano series are by far the most comfortable shoes. The biggest problem with Adidas is it never caught the resellers market which Nike, and then New Balance and recently Asics is catching up.
You deserve an award Mr. Modern MBA. The information in here is priceless!
Imagine if Adidas CEO just asked its customers for feedback
Update video needed
aged well 🤣
Adidas will always have a special place in heart till I die
that's it, adidas really needs a visionary, as nike has shown for the past year that sports and fashion go hand in hand, just see the soaring success of the nike dunks and jordans, while adidas is yet to launch a shoe as influential, people don't want to wear boosts anymore. They need an iconic silhouette that is timeless and marketed well
All they have to do is market the Forums well
wow this has changed a lot in the last months with Ye getting kicked out and a new CEO coming in
I did not realize how much my fitness life mirrored the success and failures of Adidas and Reebok.
Some of the best content on YT right now :)
They should bring back the Indoor Super / Busenitz. Not everyone wants to buy a $200 sock-shoe.
Nike became too pricey. Their entry level shoes are a joke while Adidas sells a good and beautiful shoes for lesser price.
This is generally very well done but you have a major fact incorrect. Mark King was the President of adidas North America - not the CEO of Reebok.
It's crazy that the same problems are starting to pop up again
I would love to see an update on this, Post Kanye catastrophe and Ultraboost and NMD slowly slipping further into irrelevance.
With one tweet, Adidas was wrecked.
Adidas now has the quality that Nike used to have back in the day but honestly in 2022 quality is a myth.
Holy shit! An American who can say 'Adidas' correctly!
As a brit, it was nice hearing it said correctly. Except I say it more of a short "a" sound instead of ah-didas, I say a-didas
Great video as always. Where do you get your stock video footage about brands?
One of the great drivers of Adidas products were their designs. Even styles from 50 years ago. So when they reintroduced the Stan Smiths, the shoes were selling out at full retail. There was even a Boost version. The retro version even outsold the original run from the 70s. Moving forward, the Adidas/Gucci line will drive sales worldwide. Nothing new, as Adidas has partnered with Porsche design 20 years ago. Reebok as a brand will do great into the future as well. As long as the new owners keep marketing that brand of shoes as a trending innovative sportswear company.
Anyone watching this after Ye confirmed he is leaving Adidas because of lack of creative control and lack of control over the brand.
amazing video all interesting and direct information of the last almost 20 years of adidas
kanye was mentioned like 3 times in the video but it had to be on the title for that ye effect lmao
Reebok's UFC deal was insanity.
It is insane how great boost/yeezy era was compared to anything adidas is doing now. How did they soar so high just to crash back down all over again.
U know the thumbnail would dope if it misspelled adidas as abidas 😅
always had adidas as my sneakers since grade school. fascinating to have a peek on the business side
The fact that Adidas didn't go bankrupt in 2009 is already incredible luck in itself
amazing video! it would be good to form a community to centre these discussions on discord or twitter. I would love to talk with you on these subjects.
Join the Modern MBA subreddit! Will be ramping that up for S2.
I feel like if Adidas pronounced Adidas the way you did, they could maybe pass off as a luxury brand lol.
Always thankful to you for putting out such high quality content 🙏
I think the ultraboost line contributed more to the comeback of adidas than the yeezy line did... are there sales numbers out there specific for the two?
Fantastic work on this video. High quality content
Best thing would be to keep both the CEO one as an operator and one as a visionary
Your videos are good but pls use music and sound effects, that way it would be perfect
Could you do a video about farfetch? I would love to hear what you have to say
The way you say ADI-DAS makes me want to break my computer.
