I think a lot of these videos are US centric, because Adidas has always been big worldwide, especially in South America and Europe. Under Armour has never been a “big” make in Europe. Always been Adidas and Nike.
The e-commerce mistake was the biggest and most head scratching of all... Also the creation of brands like Adidas Neo which sponsored Justin Bieber was weird. You have originals already, why having a youth brand just for remakes of originals models?
This is only relevant in America and to Americans. Adidas has always been bigger and more coveted in Europe and the UK and Kanye West didn’t do a lot to change that. The most important person that Adidas have had on their payroll for the past decade is Lionel Messi. His nemesis boots are so popular the general release colourways of _millions_ of pairs sell out in minutes in Europe. As for fashion/trends I see most people in my area in Stan smiths, spezials, gazelle’s and sambas. 350’s were a thing for kids (and I mean children not adults) maybe 4 years ago but I never see them anymore. You might see some new balance and puma but you only ever really see Nike on mums at the gym. My Dad has worn Adidas sambas with a full Beckenbauer since he was 16/17 and when he wears through his current lot he’ll go get some more and he’s almost 70. He doesn’t know who Kanye west is or what Yeezys are but he sure as hell knows the three stripes means quality. Adidas’s success has largely been down to the exceptional work they’ve done rereleasing older models/styles at a fair price point and at high enough quantities that they are attainable by your average person. Boost actually probably lost them money overall (it’s very heavy and isn’t as mouldable as other cushions limiting its functionality severely) and it’s one of the reasons they pivoted away from it so hard toward cheaper and more functional foams like adiprene and adiplus.
@@burrybondz225 didi you read the comment? for me as a brazilian, nike actually could make sucess in dominating our market, but mainly because of its 1996 deal with nike and lifetime deal with r9, in spite of that, adidas has never left our market nowadays having more clubs than nike itself (and its been like that for years). The point is that football alone can make insane amounts of revenue, since the world cup final has almost ten times the viewers of a superbowl final, even the champions league final has 3 times the viewers of a superbowl final, and this number would double if compared to nba finals as a whole, which means that usa market was an unnecessary goal, the problem with adidas revenue are mainly cause the prices are lower than nike in most of things
Excellent analysis. It’s amazing to me that Hainer didn’t hyperfocus on existing Adidas and Reebok users and on what would make the product better for them. Not entering e-commerce early was arguably the biggest mistake made followed by paying such a high premium for Reebok.
as a kid I never broke em, always outgrew them first. the only pair I've beaten enough was a pair of stans that has lasted me 4 years now. but ngl Asics just feel right on my feet, just nowhere near as durable as Adidas is.
It can really only be understated imo, how much value and growth Kanye West has brought Adidas as a brand. Not just because of his name and photos, but because of his designs. No matter what you think of him as a person, and his politics aside - He's a creative powerhouse. And even though he has had a few misses (or a lot, depending on who you ask) ...that's to be expected when your design work is so far away from the norm. But when he swung and finally hit a home run... Oh man! I mean, not only does it portray Adidas as a forward-thinking and trend-setting brand as a whole, but suddenly you'd see 60+ year old grandmas wearing Walmart copies of his Yeezy 350 shoes.
This is a great documentary! Thank you very much. For me Adidas was always with Nike at the top, but its interesting to see, that this direct competition was not always this close.
It was made by Germans, yet it is super popular in Slavic nations. It instantly transforms you into a drug dealer or Gopnik, same way BMW transform you into drug dealer. 😀Adidas is a little bit expensive for post Soviet countries. If originals gear was cheaper, they would be everywhere in Slavic country. Not that they are not often seen, but it would be much more with slighly cheaper price.
People need to realize that Boost/Yezzy era was just that, era. People in North America should open their eyes to see that Europe has always embraced Adidas. Superstars, Stan Smiths, Gazelle, Samba, Campus, Forum, Rivalry, Top Ten, etc are signature Adidas staples. Not just Boost and Yeezy, when you get older you look for comfort and style. I switched over from Nike to Adidas back in 2008.
I remember buying Reebok shoes way back in 2014 and it was really nice to have a lifestyle atheleisure brand dedicated to comfortable walking that was not overpriced. It was not the pure comfort atheleisure nowadays but it was on to something. Nowadays Skeckers has definitely dominated that market in Asia.
They may have saved Adidas, but I think they’ll be just fine now without Kanye and ultraboost being less popular. They have so many cool models that are unique and innovative, unlike Nike with all their retros. When everyone (the general public) gets tired of retros, they’ll wanna find something new, and Adidas definitely offers that.
Doubtful of that. The thing with the Nike retros is that they become classic silhouettes that work. While I wear addidas because they are the most comfortable tennis shoes for me, addidas has never looked good outside of yeezies. They need someone and a silhouette to associate with the brand.

Great video. I 100% agree. They do need another visionary. For example, the direction to push UltraBoost to performance running shoes was and still is a terrible idea. People love the UltraBoost for the comfort and/or fashion. But Boost technology just can't compete with the modern foams out there in the market. It's too heavy and not as responsive. Even the vast majority of Adidas running shoes in the market right now have switched away from Boost and into LightStrike (and LightStrike Pro). UltraBoost 21/22 and even the monstrosity that is the 23 version are all heading in the wrong direction. The focus should be put back to lifestyle. They are doing that somewhat with the original model, but new models should also be lifestyle.

for the potentially confused Asian watchers of the video, when the video says "Asia" it really means China. Football (or soccer for our American friends) is actually really big in Southeast Asia and Korea. It is only not popular in China, which I think is what the video is trying to refer to. Likewise, basketball is only huge in China. Other Asian countries definitely adopt it, but it's nowhere near the most popular sport in most Asian countries. I'm sure it's a honest mistake, but it's quite funny to hear these takes about "Asia" and then have the information to back it up stating China specifically. There are more Asian countries than just China y'know.
I remember before 2015, very few sneaker channels talked about Adidas, it was all about Jordan, Foamposite etc... well the big channels anyway. Boost and Yeezy really changed the game for Adidas.
Wow this is certainly well made and informed. I worked for Adi for 7 years during the periods you've laid out in this video. For sure it was noticeable at the time what was happening!
It’s the German way to say the brand, so he must have decided to use that, since it is a German Brand. I am German and the way he says Adidas is how people here say it, but I am aware that most American pronounce it differently.
Looking back the history and the momentum that adidas gained on 2015. Im interested to see how 2023 onward goes for adidas. With cut off yeezy deals, oversaturated sneaker market with boost technology this surely would be a fit to watch.
I guess they will experience a recession like on the early 2010s. Maybe not as bad as then, because Ultraboosts and their retro sneakers are still very popular. But I doubt they will beat their 2015 dominance anytime near soon.
Adidas has been getting quite a lot of attention from the younger generation. Forums had been quite the success for the brand and styles like the Sambas, Gazelles and Spezials have become extremely popular on social media
@@justsamoo3480 nah man these are old atleast in Germany no one wears these or ultra boosts anymore the hype is over atleast in my generation I'm 19 and from Germany so it may be different in the US

Ultra boosts are hella outdated though, not gonna argue with that.
The quality of the videos blow me away, like the entire time i was thinking “what are those share holders thinking keeping this clown on?!” As if i knew anything about adidas the stock before this
Sambas and the various more comfortable shoewear versions of that are their most timeless, evergreen classic -- every 5 years the new generation realizes how cool they are -- the iconic black with white stripes ones
You're right, how can he be credited for things he inherited. If he could've brought Reebok to profitability before selling it off, he would've proved himself in my eyes.
all I know is that they objectively make better running and trail shoes lol Nike it's all design and little substance, all my Nike shoes never lasted more than 3 years while I'm still rocking Adidas shoes from 6 years ago. That's just my personal experience though
A great video about Adidas! The company went through a great transition. As a long time Adidas consumer I'd say Heiner wasn't a terrible CEO; he focused on high quality athletics which is the market Adidas thrived. I'm happy it wasn't a video bashing his management. Since 2015 their sales grew but the quality of their shoes diminished. I think it will continue to sell to consumers who enjoy buying trendy shoes but actual athletes will transition faster to Nike or UnderArmour who's focused on lighter and more durable attire.
Yes sir... Been using Adidas since I was in my teens, they still do make comfortable shoes and football boots. But when it comes to actual apparel, once I tried Nike and Under Armour I just couldn't believe how much more comfortable those felt compared to Adidas gear.
Ultraboosts and NMDs are so comfortable to wear around. Hainer may have made some horrible mistakes but he's got my respect for creating these amazing brands.
Adidas was popular in Europe by having a stranglehold on sports supply and selling to fans. Reebok had a stranglehold on sports supply and a massive potential customer base of fans of those sports. So naturally they dumped all that for CrossFit. The depths of some peoples incompetence is mind blowing.
Thanks for the super interesting and easy-to-digest analysis. It looks like the history is repeating itself again in adidas. Would be really cool if you would make the next episode to analyze adidas situation from 2019/2020 onward
i am german and the way you say adidas is 100% correct but since you are talking english it still sound wrong to me xD (even though you are correct). i really got used to the american/english pronounciation of adidas haha :D
Simplifying "Asia" as "China" with their basketball culture is sucks, not even considering India with their cricket, and other Asian country with their football culture.
Philipness too but ur right unfortunately indian market doesn't matter 😂 there too poor an nobodys boots no matter who promotes them people in are wasting money like that
I think you overestimated the position of Adidas in football at the time. Even though Adidas was the official FIFA sponsor, it was already losing a lot of ground to Nike. Even at the time of the 06 World Cup and specially the next 5 years, Nike overtook them there.
I did not realize how much my fitness life mirrored the success and failures of Adidas and Reebok. I won't go through each year, but it's retrospectively clear that marketting to me was working. 😂 I was an early adopter of the adidas casual shoe amongst my friends in 2004. I was a part of Crossfit in 2011-13 and wore Reebok. NB and another brand I'm blanking on now were my running shoes until the ultraboost in 2015, but I didn't stay there either. 😂 Either way, I've never been a fan of Nike because they never fit right for me.
The trend for Jordans and Dunks seems to be ongoing but Jordan is the main thing keeping Nike at the top. Every reseller video you see is Jordan and dunks yet they make so many other great shoes Air Max 1 Air Max 95 air Max 97 to name a few. Adidas appeals to a completely different market UK Football fans will wear adidas footwear and clothing. In Europe older guys are seeing the old adidas models continue to be released and are buying them to relive their youth. There is also a resurgence in New Balance for the resellers who are moving away from wearing NIke but continue to sell them for the big profits.
I’ve been boycotting Nike ever since Phil Knight left Oregon to make their cheap crap in China. Adidas and New Balance have always been a superior product! Glad Adidas is back in the picture!

Nike became too pricey. Their entry level shoes are a joke while Adidas sells a good and beautiful shoes for lesser price.
I’m from the future… adidas broke up with Yeezys
Run-D.M.C. pronounced it correctly.
I can't listen to 40 minutes of him saying so wrong
I remember before 2015, very few sneaker channels talked about Adidas, it was all about Jordan, Foamposite etc... well the big channels anyway. Boost and Yeezy really changed the game for Adidas.
100% the boost models and the nmd r1 built the hype
Until now that's what's happening. It's honestly boring, talking about one brand only.
good on you for saying Adidas correctly!
Not no more Nike still wins
One of the best business videos I’ve ever seen on RUclips. Thank you for your work 🤝
Anyone watching this after Ye confirmed he is leaving Adidas because of lack of creative control and lack of control over the brand.
These are great videos, filled with good info and told in a very entertaining way. Keep up the great work!
Wow this is certainly well made and informed. I worked for Adi for 7 years during the periods you've laid out in this video. For sure it was noticeable at the time what was happening!
Adidas just got lucky with John Wexler. As soon as he left for Shopify, things went down. Crazy that this video has been made without mentioning him.
I do not agree with the way he pronounces Adidas
@@justsamoo3480 nah man these are old atleast in Germany no one wears these or ultra boosts anymore the hype is over atleast in my generation I'm 19 and from Germany so it may be different in the US
@@lolsoos4205 They got weirdly popular online about a year ago, probably because of their retro look. To me it’s really weird, because I used to play handball in Spezials when I was younger and now I see them being praised by Americans. Forums are undeniably popular, I see them everywhere. Ultra boosts are hella outdated though, not gonna argue with that.
And people want to compare Virgil ablo to Kanye West. Kanye is a beast.
The reason ultraboots became a fashion statement was because kanye wore them when he got signed to adidas but before he had his own shoe.
Same with NMDs I feel.
Yeah, Kanye had a big impact but the most important person Adidas signed is definitely Leo Messi, his boots sell like hot cakes in Europe in minutes.
wow this has changed a lot in the last months with Ye getting kicked out and a new CEO coming in
Didn’t age well
Are thwy both doing terrible now?
What do you mean...they jersey and shoes increase a lot in 2022 and 2023...what is even your argument idiot lol hahaha
This aged poorly
I get what you're saying but Adidas was/is losing money since Kanye West departure tho 🤷🏾♂️🤷🏾♂️
As a sneakerhead and an MBA - I greatly appreciate this video.
The quality of the videos blow me away, like the entire time i was thinking “what are those share holders thinking keeping this clown on?!” As if i knew anything about adidas the stock before this
I know this is just a sidenote but the chart at 16:41 is comically awful. Just hilariously meaningless
It's the bread and butter of PR / Marketing / consulting firms to make these kind of banal things and sell them to executives.
Emperor's New Clothes.
Sambas and the various more comfortable shoewear versions of that are their most timeless, evergreen classic -- every 5 years the new generation realizes how cool they are -- the iconic black with white stripes ones
Until they changed their logo to drop the font to something that looks like the SS runes.
This is really interesting to learn about, currently studying business administration. So all these videos help a lot to aquire more knowledge.
This didn't age well
The company got ungrateful.
This didn't age well
What makes you say that? Not trying to be sarcastic I’m just genuinely curious as someone who doesn’t really keep up with this stuff
I've always preferred adidas over nike.
It's crazy that the same problems are starting to pop up again
You're right, how can he be credited for things he inherited.
If he could've brought Reebok to profitability before selling it off, he would've proved himself in my eyes.
unfortunately often credit people for stuff they inherited
all I know is that they objectively make better running and trail shoes lol Nike it's all design and little substance, all my Nike shoes never lasted more than 3 years while I'm still rocking Adidas shoes from 6 years ago.
Update, the company is flailing again
Still amazed how your content is free. Insane.
Fuck yes, I knew i stayed up to 2am for a reason
Jezz this didn’t age well 🤷♂️
This day just got 50% better ,may go for a run! Love your videos !
Ultraboosts and NMDs are so comfortable to wear around. Hainer may have made some horrible mistakes but he's got my respect for creating these amazing brands.
They should bring back the Indoor Super / Busenitz. Not everyone wants to buy a $200 sock-shoe.
Reebok was gross back when he bought it. No one liked Reebok. It was the ugly brand your mom bought because it was so cheap.
This didn't age well
Thanks for the super interesting and easy-to-digest analysis. It looks like the history is repeating itself again in adidas. Would be really cool if you would make the next episode to analyze adidas situation from 2019/2020 onward
dear americans, I work in Adidas HQ (in germany) -> it's prononuced AHdidas, with emphasis in the first syllable not in the last one (adiDAS) smh
Why are you pronouncing Adidas that way?
Because that’s how it’s pronounced in the rest of the world.
kanye was mentioned like 3 times in the video but it had to be on the title for that ye effect lmao
bro this content is so good
i am german and the way you say adidas is 100% correct but since you are talking english it still sound wrong to me xD (even though you are correct). i really got used to the american/english pronounciation of adidas haha :D
Simplifying "Asia" as "China" with their basketball culture is sucks, not even considering India with their cricket, and other Asian country with their football culture.
Philipness too but ur right unfortunately indian market doesn't matter 😂 there too poor an nobodys boots no matter who promotes them people in are wasting money like that
Unless they take football seriously
this aged horribly
Why
@@solidfuel0I wrote this a year ago and don't rlly care abt shoes anymore so I forgot lmaoo
This aged like milk
I’ll summarize the 40 minute video for you all. Kanye West.
did he even talk about kanye in this video?
I think you overestimated the position of Adidas in football at the time. Even though Adidas was the official FIFA sponsor, it was already losing a lot of ground to Nike. Even at the time of the 06 World Cup and specially the next 5 years, Nike overtook them there.
I'm convinced that 99% of comments on this video are made by ppl who skimmed through the video
It is my cheap adidas shoes that is durable compared to my nike. That is why I love adidas
Yet another great in depth video thank you MMBA 🐐🔥
This video did not age well
For the same price, Nike's quality (tennis shoes e.g.) really sucks. I've not bought Nike's products for a long time.
I would love to see an update on this, Post Kanye catastrophe and Ultraboost and NMD slowly slipping further into irrelevance.
Loved the video, the focus on hainer as a CEO instead of just analyzing the company was great.
I really like AAdeeDaSs
Not sure if your memeing or not
Well this video aged well.
I feel like if Adidas pronounced Adidas the way you did, they could maybe pass off as a luxury brand lol.
The video title should be how Yeezy saved Adidas
🤭🤭🤭
Adidas still lose to Nike
I’ve been boycotting Nike ever since Phil Knight left Oregon to make their cheap crap in China. Adidas and New Balance have always been a superior product! Glad Adidas is back in the picture!
