The scene from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang where Grandpa Potts passes Truly stating that he is on his way to India to have a cup of tea with the Maharajah -- "Cheerio"
the first 6 seconds !!! the lines are funny.. but the walk !!! so many details in so few seconds, just the walk alone is worth a million lines Lionel Jeffries makes it look so effortless, but to get so much in to so few steps shows his amazing skills of observation and mimicry.. his mannerisms and gait are a marvelous pastiche of British army sergeant caricatures you need to keep pausing the clip (space bar) to catch all the physical quirks the best of British where have all the greats gone?....
I choose to believe his shed is just his place he goes to role-play/play pretend some adventure as his hobby. Really sweet if you think of it like that
I would totally buy this lovable old bloke as Dr Who and that thing as the TARDIS! Lionel Jeffries is perfect in this movie. I’m English and Grandpa Potts reminds me so much of my beloved (and much missed) granddad! Hence the reason I love this film so much.
Ironically, Grandpa is probably the most responsible and down-to-earth of the Potts family. One theme of CCBB seems to be “misapplied imagination.” The whole family is creative. The children are constantly pretending and playing - but they skip school to play with Chitty. Caractacus has forward-thinking ideas (moving pictures, vacuum, rockets, etc), but he gets so absorbed in his work that he doesn’t notice that his children skip school, and he kept forgetting to fix the roof for his father’s bedroom, meaning Grandpa had to sleep in a raincoat during a storm. Grandpa charges Caractacus to wake up, and while Grandpa is shown to be eccentric and imaginative (his son and grandchildren got it from somewhere, haha), he is also practical. He is a retired army veteran who has done honest work, and his “trips” in his hut are part of him enjoying his twilight years in peace. However, he steps up to watch over his grandchildren when his son spends several days refurbishing Chitty - he reads to them and makes sure the children eat. Caractacus’ final words in the film about using dreams for practical purposes are an echo/variation of what Grandpa had been trying to get him to realize earlier when he charged him to wake up.
You guys remember that Spongebob episode where he and Patrick play in that box? I'm starting to think that Grandpa Potts is a member of their lodge. He is my favorite character.
I love the ending where he's playing toy soldiers with Lord Scrumptious! I watch this with my three year-old grandson at least once a week. He loves it, and I never get bored. Great to see these classic moments still being uploaded on YT. Thank you!
*As a kid:* How is he going to India? Is that a transporter? *As an adult:* Is that a transporter or has he lost his mind and that's the restroom? Oh dear. RIP Childhood
One of the spies said he is going to his laboratory. The floor of that little building must have had a downstairs access or the building must have been a little elevator.
I feel very sad now, watching this after Sally Ann Howes died. I thought it were Julie Andrews who played the role, but no it were Sally. What a shame she's gone.
0:05 Chitty: (narrating) Okay, this guy claimed to be an explorer, but in truth, he never really went anywhere. He just loved to dress like this. Almost as if he was playing a game!
I loved this scene as a kid. Now if only someone could do the scene where he tells his son off for failing to fix the leaky roof in his bedroom and then tries to sleep under the leaky roof anyway.
he is the most excellent character but i wonder if that the movie makers portrayed him as a pot smoker or a grower see how it was filmed in the late 1960's...... but still dam good and the best of every one in the film.... p.s. love posh and up from the roses
Ok is this little set of goofs just nonsense for the kids? Or is it some kind of inside joke that I don’t get? I’ve been thinking about this for like 10 years please help me lol
Quiet Corner there’s a couple of interpretations people have made here, and later confirmed by the stage show We can take it that he’s just sitting in his shed reminiscing of past glories whilst enjoying his pipe and a cuppa of tea. You see a teapot he uses to bail out the flooded hut when he’s kidnapped later in the film. He’s an old soldier, missing the adventure and routine of his glory days, and with two young grandchildren and a busy son inventing all hours of the day, he’s just getting a bit of peace and quiet, and keeping himself busy with all the outfits and “adventures” However in the stage show they hint at it being an outside toilet and grandpa is retiring there to do his business, smoke his pipe and enjoy some peace 😂
I always thought that maybe the hut was just a cover to a secret hatch that led down to a network of tunnels leading in every direction so he could gain access to all his other huts in all the parts of the world. You can only imagine!(smiley face)

That line I'm off to India to have a cup of tea with the Maharajah is so funny, Grandpa Potts is one of the best characters in the movie
I can't decide whether Grandpa is absolutely insane or actually has a teleporter in his outhouse.
Neither- he's just eccentric.
It’s a chicken coop.
It's bigger on the inside.
Grandpa Potts is an absolute legend!
And there he goes~
Off to India.
Nobody ever gets this quote when I'm on my way to drop a deuce!
This guy cracks me up
RIP Sally Ann Howes, (Truly Scrumptious).
Apparently his hut is the TARDIS
Could he be Dr. Who??
😳 Woah...
I would say more his private toilet 😜
Master Knife a... turdis then? I’ll see myself out
@@arm279145 No need. You made me spit out coffee. 😛 Thanks. 😂

Lol that’s not a shed mate
It's a toilet

I run out of air from laughing every time.
Honestly this guy is me strutting around.

Grandpa and Lord Scrumptious were army buddies.

I always did like Grandpa.
When I was young I thought he said my uncle roger

joyunicycle so true!
I've been watching this film for years and I just now realised that maybe his hut is actually his toilet lol
One of the spies said he is going to his laboratory. The floor of that little building must have had a downstairs access or the building must have been a little elevator.
Maybe he travels internationally by having someone else carry him in his shed.
I know. For the sake of sanity I prefer to think of it as a transporter.
Hey look it's me when I get old and am living in my tiny house. I hope I'm this eccentric and kooky.
The way he says India "Indya" xd
I feel very sad now, watching this after Sally Ann Howes died. I thought it were Julie Andrews who played the role, but no it were Sally. What a shame she's gone.
This scene is just...nonsensical. Classic...but nonsensical.

And Truly's thinking to herself "Right!"
I got up this morning, and I shot an elephant in my pajamas! How he ever got in my pajamas I shall never know! 😂😂😂😂
That's the only time in the movie Grandpa talks to Truly, though she doesn't respond.
HEHEYYYY
He should've got through a teleport machine to locate himself to India!
I’m off to Africa
shyboy 1992 I’ve been meaning to post that! Along with off to Alaska!
Christopher Anton next he off to Antarctica 🇦🇶
This music and lionel Jefferies is just golden
I don't know who's funnier this guy or the two German spies that look like Laurel and Hardy
You mean the two Vulgarian spies?
My favourite scene in my favourite movie

Port out! Starboard home!
Posh with a capitol P O S H Posh

...Other than that, their home is completely normal
Yeah, nevermind the rocket ramp in the front yard and all the experimental creations in the windmill... and their dinner machine lol
lol
@@LNERMallardYou mean you didn't have any of those things in your childhood home?
This means going for a shit in our house, and yes I do the silly walk !
Love this scene, and Lionel Jefferies playing Grandpa to Dick Van Dyke who are the same age
Loving the profile picture of the guy In black tie reading the newspaper.
Me: So how British are you?
Brit: *Shows video*
R.I.P
Grandpa Pott's actor died.
Go2Rutledge loine Jeffreys
Lionel Jeffries died in 2010.
I don't think it clicked in my head he was going to the bathroom. That walk he does gives it away now as an adult lmao
...but it's not a toilet it's a potting shed
If they ever did a reboot for this film I would love to audition for the part of Grandpa Potts, even if it was a stage performance.
When I was a kid, I thought that was the bad king lol.
Wouldn't be surprised if they've edited out Grandpa's "Fuzzy wuzzies" comment lol
I'm off to indyyyyyiiiaaaaaa
So he's walking like that cos he needs to poop, and that's his outhouse?
When I was young I thought it was the bad king I was like what’s he doing there? But it was always grandma.
If your thinking why ? You'll never understand...
How much drinks ah d you been drinking this morning 😂😂😂

So if Dick Van Dyke is caracticus is the father crack potts
🤣
What does he do in that shed?
I don't know why, but he reminds me of jane's father from Tarzan😂
How I walk when I gotta butt sneeze
Now that's a chad walk
Lol he went in a Port a potty 🚽
So what happens? Does he actually go into that laboratory and imagine that he's in India, Alaska or Africa?
Ok is this little set of goofs just nonsense for the kids? Or is it some kind of inside joke that I don’t get? I’ve been thinking about this for like 10 years please help me lol
I wonder where is he going when he goes in that shack. Is it an outhouse where he's going to take a shit or is it like his fantasy shed?
He's off to India to have a cup of tea with the Maharaja... obviously.
He just sits in there and starts daydreaming.

I'm still trying to work out if he going to the toilet or it's like his thinking room.
