The AREA series of DiMarzio Strat replacement pickups have become my all time favorite STRAT pickups!! I have them in many of my guitars and they are wonderful!!
Love these pickups - I have 58 in the neck, 61 in the middle and a PAF stye humbucker at the bridge. Great combination. These are quieter than the humbucker!
So many critics....I'm quite sure most of the critics are jamming out on their Ibanez into a crate g10 . Eating hot pockets their mom just heAted up thinking "man; I'm awesome". Just a reality check, he's the one actually doing reviews for an international guitar magazine while you're probably praying for that next gig at the pizza barn.
I have Area 58 for my middle pickup which is a great contrast with my bridge and neck EVOLUTIONS. Its the most noiseless/humless virtual humbucker, very sweet strat crispy tones. I love it
I have 3 area 58s in my Highway One. Now I'm going to get some Area 61s for the bridges of my Strats and parse the 58s into mids and necks. These pickups are THE BEST!!! Dimarzio just rules.
I have a pair of Virtual Vintage Blues that would definitely benefit with either one of these series of Area pickups; once I complete the set, the Stewmac Golden Age pickups currently in my MIM Strat Special will go into the hardtail Bullet Strat. I ordered the Area 58 and first loaded them in the Bullet Strat with some pretty impressive results and I finally loaded them in my Mexican Strat starting with the Area 58 in the middle position for a month and then the bridge position and I'm anxious to know what it sounds like in neck position of my Strat thanks to the videos I've seen so far including this one.
@herc122 There is nothing wrong with Area 61s in all positions, but installing a brighter-sounding pickup such as an Area 67 in the middle will accentuate the quack of the 2 & 4 positions. With the second Strat, an Area 61 in the middle might be a good choice.
Typically you want 61 bridge, 67 middle, and 58 neck. The 58 gives a more classic neck tone. 67 is great for the middle because of its bright/quacky sound. The 58 is a slightly tamer middle sound. Just make sure you use 250k pots.
What set of Dimarzio Areas would be the most versatile choice? Is 61/58/61 a good one? Or maybe 61/67/61? Is the 67 a good option for the bridge? It´s a little hotter than 61 right? And how do these pickups compare to the Fender 57/62 and 69 CS? Thanks, I´m so much in doubt about puckups. Hope u can answer my questions.
yeah the noise increases but its not impedence which is the cause of huming, what your hearing is the strings moving because hes moving the guitar around and your also hearing some slight overtones of feedback because the gains right up.
I have a 1977 Ibanez strat copy made in Japan of course...it is one sweet neck on that thing...gonna put an area 61 in it...keeping the originals though in case i ever sale it....probably won't though because i've had it since about 1987.
I have those in a California Strat 58s in the neck and middle 61 in the bridge sounds great to me position 2 awesome knopfler sound..think first and second Dire Staits albums...
You're right... I have DiMarzio Virtual Vintage and they are ok... anyway... I think now the best combination is Suhr pickups with BPSSC system... it's unbeatable.
Youre absolutely right. But in guitar circles, they have adopted the word "gain" as meaning distortion. Im an engineer, I know thats wrong, but a majority of players use that terminology, so we have to live with it. I have the same problem dealing with Salespeople, theyve mangled the technical language into their own, and look at me confused when I use the right terminology. Welcome to the USA. If its easy, it doesnt necessarily need to be right.
I have installed them on a highway strat. Muuuch better than the stock PU. More dinamic even with more signle coils sound. But installing them, I have realised that my amp (hot rod deville 212) is a drak sound amp, and that boders me.
Those pickups really do sound great. I'm thinking of getting a Monoprice California Classic for $89 and putting these pickups in it. What do you all think of that plan?
These pickups sound great. Bu,t I an stuggling to choose between them and Hot Gold Lace. Which pickups to you think will have that old vintage Fender hollow sound with screaming hot leads. Lace claim to have all that, plus bell-like tones a quacky sound too. Tom Retired in Orlando Florida
I have to diagree. Differant pickups respond to overdrive pedals ( or amp overdrive) differantly. In order to KNOW how they will sound you will usually want to hear em
It's like all of those. But before you find your own sound, ya gotta know how to play. But yeah, good pickups and good strings are a good place to start.
I just had an Area'58 installed in the neck position of my Strat (maple neck/alder body). It sounds better than in this video. Much more dynamic. This guy seems to have all the tone controls cranked, hence the treble snarl. Rolling off the tone is what is needed. It is sensitive to height adjustments and picking dynamics. Sounds like an old '58 strat with no hum to me. Now I can't put my guitar down.
I have the '61 in the neck and the 58 in the middle of my fat strat. I find them to be a little fuzzy in the attack, and not so clear like for example the fender eric johnson pickups in my eric johnson fender. The Fender pickups, which are alittle lower output, have the spank, clear attack with no fuzzines. Ok the fender pickups are not noise canceling, but they sound alot better and like real good strat single coils. I am going to change out my area's with maybe some Suhr V60LP's or similar.
@PopExpo even though the "area" series is noiseless they don't sound as fat and as full as the true velvets in the neck position. If you want a real fat sounding sweet noiseless pickup for the neck position try the Dimarzio YJM model.
rite! here we go buddy i would put an EMG 81 in the bridge and two! EMG S single coil pickups in the middle and neck position! maybe even replace the tone knb with a emg spc to get that bright solid metal tone perfect for your sound to cut through rythem playiong and soloing!
there's no hum.. but theyre is some "hiss" =S but i still like it =) what if i want a Jimmy PAge sound from his '58 Tele? could I use the are 58 in the bridge position?
you could use a 58 in the bridge position right, or when you buy them they come with the 61 and 58's. And also, is that a particular song he is playing when he plays the middle and neck pickup?
well for me i play metal right,so if you have a long patch cord and if you go far awasy from your amp there wont be any buzz(well it works for me)andwhen your sitting down and you turn to the right or left the buzz will fade away.just play with it by moving around.your vids are cool btw
Nice pups, but there's sure a lot of noise in that microphone. What kind of amp? But I do agree with the guy below, a lot of tone is in your hands and technique. Nice they don't hum.
I put this same set up on my Fender. Do they sound exactly like the real deal pick ups, I don't think so. Do they sound great yes. Are they noiseless absolutely. To my ears they sound a little more in the mids.
@joesl8 I have tried them all (except Fralins...too damned expensive!) and have found the DiMarzio's to be the most true to the 'Strat Sound' while being totally silent. I am MORE than satisfied with my choice! Listen to the video.....seriously....what MORE could a Strat player want?!? All the trademark sounds are there! I I, personally, have had NO issues with DiMarzio's customer service. I exchanged a wrong pickup choice at their Staten Island location with no problems!
Corey Kopta Interesting. I wondered after listening to this. Sometimes videos make you think you're hearing something better than it really is, simply because the guy is such a great player. i hear Joe Barden's are a nice substitute. Very expensive though.
is it possible to do a pinch farmonic on a fender squeir? with strat pickups ( bullet strat ) or should i sell that guitar for like 100 on ebay and buy a better guitar like a dean?
Hey Paul...wow...I'd never seen you so young...what year were you born in? 85? 86? 87? BTW the DiMarzio Areas are all amazing I've had them put in in a couple of Strats of mine and they are truly my favourite Strat pick ups.
Since these are basically stacked humbuckers, would I need to setup my amp as if I'm using humbuckers? I don't want to get these then regret having to change setup as I change guitars.
Try a 67 or YJM n,61 or YJM m and an HS3 b or something like that for a versitile guitar.I know what you mean man,I play everything from john mayer, hendrix,SRV,RHCP,to metallica,yngwie,nirvana,btbam,greenday,a7x,its hard to find one guitar that can do all that, especially for like gigs,Im gonna try a 67n 61m and Superdistortion b.dont ever rush on buying anything permenant, take you time, tone shop, try fender SCNs,dimarzios seymour duncans,GFSs,its a huge variety, find whats best for you, good luck.
hmmm guys,,,i have a stratocaster...but i wanna ask you guys...if will put the gauge of the gain in to the fullest level..would it be bad for the guitar or the amp?...i mean would it have a bad effect for the two?
Those pickups sound very nice. However, I couldn't hear any difference of nuances when you play near the neck or near the bridge. These pickups are not as dynamic as a real single coil. Am I right?
I knew that was paul.He plays the same thing over and over. And Im more of a Fender/Marshall amp guy,but Line 6s sound pretty nice, and they have distortion out the ass.
Hi,
We used a Vox AC 30 hand wire version.
Hope that helps,
Larry DiMarzio
I wish your shirt had a noiseless pickup :)
kevoice 😂
the 61 and 58's cots about $70 each, so about $210 for a full set. I love how cheap dimarzio is compared to other brands, and they sound so good.
The AREA series of DiMarzio Strat replacement pickups have become my all time favorite STRAT pickups!!

tim starkey Hey buddy, I happen to like pizza barn mkay?
Best comment.
They never let me play at the pizza barn! Do you know someone who could get me in?
The guy is a decent player with good touch. It's a good demo.
Damn too funny... .
Hi,
The Area pickups are noiseless, therefore, in all positions. You can wire standard single coils to be quite in position 2 and 4.
Best middle pickup match for dimarzio virtual solo neck?
I have Area 58 for my middle pickup which is a great contrast with my bridge and neck EVOLUTIONS. Its the most noiseless/humless virtual humbucker, very sweet strat crispy tones. I love it
The neck-mid pickups together at 3:00 are amazing!
I have 3 area 58s in my Highway One. Now I'm going to get some Area 61s for the bridges of my Strats and parse the 58s into mids and necks. These pickups are THE BEST!!! Dimarzio just rules.
YEAH!! Whoever wrote this rocks. And knows everything about cool stuff and life.
I have a pair of Virtual Vintage Blues that would definitely benefit with either one of these series of Area pickups; once I complete the set, the Stewmac Golden Age pickups currently in my MIM Strat Special will go into the hardtail Bullet Strat. Paul, got to say. You improve everytime I hear you. Keep up the good wok man...
Try both! Only you can truly decide. They are both great sets of pups.
Great video...just purchased one of each now gonna buy that second 58 for the neck :)
the fact that they are made with alnico 2s is great. 2s have less magnet pull which in turn gives better sustain and inotation.
@herc122 There is nothing wrong with Area 61s in all positions, but installing a brighter-sounding pickup such as an Area 67 in the middle will accentuate the quack of the 2 & 4 positions.

Damn, noiseless shirts coming soon!

what an amazing tone!

Solid sounding pickups
Fantastic PU!!
I bought these!!
Now i'm going to put in them on my Strato!!
I have a 1977 Ibanez strat copy made in Japan of course...it is one sweet neck on that thing...gonna put an area 61 in it...keeping the originals though in case i ever sale it....probably won't though because i've had it since about 1987.
Now they need Dimarzio to eliminate the scratch on that lapel mic Paul is using. Wow that's distracting!
@IIBlackoftheNightII a charvel, great sound! the neck is really comfortable
I'm thinking of using the Area 61 in the neck and middle and a PAF Pro or Master in the bridge in my current build.
I don't know what's worse. 60 cycle hum or Paul's lapel mic incessantly rubbing against his shirt. I think I'd take the hum!
I have those in a California Strat 58s in the neck and middle 61 in the bridge sounds great to me position 2 awesome knopfler sound..think first and second Dire Staits albums...
You're right... I have DiMarzio Virtual Vintage and they are ok... anyway... I think now the best combination is Suhr pickups with BPSSC system... it's unbeatable.
they are the Dimarzio Area 58 and Area 61 pickups...i have that exact same setup.
Youre absolutely right. But in guitar circles, they have adopted the word "gain" as meaning distortion. Curious - why go with two 58’s instead of a 67 in the Middle?
Terrific sounds!!
I have 2 Jimmy Vaughan Strats, one with area61,58,58; and the other with all area 61's. All area 61's is my performance axe of choice.
They're good in any position, but the 61 is rccomended for the bridge, and the 58 for middle or neck. The new 67 is good for neck and middle too.
These pickups sound great. Bu,t I an stuggling to choose between them and Hot Gold Lace. Which pickups to you think will have that old vintage Fender hollow sound with screaming hot leads. Lace claim to have all that, plus bell-like tones a quacky sound too.

Awesome tone Paul. Just wish you'd used a "noiseless" microphone on your shirt collar!
@LarryDiMarzio Hello Larry. Isn't it true that not all hum is caused by the pickups? Sometimes it has to to with other aspects, right?
This guy is the main character
I have to diagree. Differant pickups respond to overdrive pedals ( or amp overdrive) differantly. In order to KNOW how they will sound you will usually want to hear em
It's like all of those. But before you find your own sound, ya gotta know how to play.

Yes. The "upgrade" one. It has lacquer sunburst finish, 22 frets, 70s headstock.
I just had an Area'58 installed in the neck position of my Strat (maple neck/alder body). It sounds better than in this video. Much more dynamic. Sounds like an old '58 strat with no hum to me. Now I can't put my guitar down.
yeah, send your shirt to DiMarzio and see if you can get it fixed
I did, and they rewound my pickups in "one day" and mailed them back the next day. I have had great experience with Dimarzio pickups...
awesomejohnnet why you telling me this?

I love the 61 sound, clean and overdriven. 51 sounds horrible to me.
Nice pickups!
rite! here we go buddy i would put an EMG 81 in the bridge and two! EMG S single coil pickups in the middle and neck position! maybe even replace the tone knb with a emg spc to get that bright solid metal tone perfect for your sound to cut through rythem playiong and soloing!

there's no hum..
but theyre is some "hiss"
=S
but i still like it =)
what if i want a Jimmy PAge sound from his '58 Tele?
could I use the are 58 in the bridge position?
you could use a 58 in the bridge position right, or when you buy them they come with the 61 and 58's.
And also, is that a particular song he is playing when he plays the middle and neck pickup?
wow that was pure pentatonic^^

Nice pups, but there's sure a lot of noise in that microphone.
What kind of amp? But I do agree with the guy below, a lot of tone is in your hands and technique. Nice they don't hum.
nice blues paul
I put this same set up on my Fender.
Do they sound exactly like the real deal pick ups, I don't think so.
Do they sound great yes.

ok i gonna get a dimarzio pick up in my neck position. Should i go true velvet or area 58, 61, or 67. i want that old school sound.
This pickup is good for playing gilmour and jimi hendrix ??
@amigdaloid - would you share the heights that you ended up with? I've got the 58/67/61 combo and am having a hard time finding the sweet spots.
i have a budget strat with standard pickups and i dont get any hum in position 2 or 4. It was a cheap guitar so i doubt they are noise cancelling?
a good combi, what AMP and effc.?
I like clean pickups... but I know that opinions are subjective when it comes to sound... anyway these pickups sound very good.
Been keeping busy. April and May are pretty good for me. You?
Can you get them in funky colors?
thats whats great about dimarzio
I like this homie
I agree that they do; I'm selling a set of Kinman Avns for that very reason.
Yeah, but Duckbuckers look so cool and sound the same.
Cheers.
Corey Kopta Interesting. I wondered after listening to this. Sometimes videos make you think you're hearing something better than it really is, simply because the guy is such a great player. i hear Joe Barden's are a nice substitute. Very expensive though.
The pickups are noiseless; however Paul's shirt isn't.
holy shit Its so fluid, its sooo damn fluid i cant feel my arms OMG!!!!!!
Demo of Area 67,67,61. What is the disference in tone between 67 and 68 neck. Which one os more hollow vintage sounding?
Dimarzio just came out with a new single-coil noiseless pickup called the "Area '67". I would like to know how they sound.
What amplifier is he playing through? Great tone.
This is a 70's Stratocaster. You can tell by the # of frets and the truss rod.
I heard with noiseless pickups, it cancels out the hum cancelling in positions 2 and 4, is that true? Do you get hum in position 2 and 4?
is it possible to do a pinch farmonic on a fender squeir? with strat pickups ( bullet strat ) or should i sell that guitar for like 100 on ebay and buy a better guitar like a dean?
@skylorz If its a Japanese one, yes. If its not, than no, its not a fair price.
Hey Paul...wow...I'd never seen you so young...what year were you born in? 85? 86? 87? BTW the DiMarzio Areas are all amazing I've had them put in in a couple of Strats of mine and they are truly my favourite Strat pick ups.
Ah, the old "lapel mic windscreen too close to your shirt" trick...
ha i reckon... he looks so much like him... do u reckon he could review that amp of back to the future
Since these are basically stacked humbuckers, would I need to setup my amp as if I'm using humbuckers? I don't want to get these then regret having to change setup as I change guitars.
are he using these pick ups in coil tap mode or humbucking?
can these noiseless single coil pickups be used on other guitars like an Ibanez or do these just fit on a strat?

That was my initial thought. Thanks!
Well done ... thank you!!
"a little bit of gain" he says...
I knew that was paul.He plays the same thing over and over. And Im more of a Fender/Marshall amp guy,but Line 6s sound pretty nice, and they have distortion out the ass.
Like Paul I also suffer from a large forehead.
Was it windy in the building?
is that a huge strat? or is he really small
