I actually like the mystery. It makes me want to see it more and be surprised about what the aliens look like and whether they're friendly or not.
That is what a trailer ought to do: raise questions that can only be answered by seeing the movie.

If you've read the short story it's based on (assuming it's true to the story) you wouldn't be saying that. It's pretty damn unique.

"Story of Your Life" by Ted Chiang. He's a big enough deal in the literary science fiction world that his name gets a credit in this teaser trailer. He's published just 13 stories in a 25-year career, 10 of which have been nominated as a best story of the year and 5 of which have won. Highest batting average in the history of the field.

this is unlikely. this movie is based on the short story "Story of your Life" by Ted Chiang. SPOILERS AHEAD(for real): unless they changed quite a bit from the short story, the aliens are not your standard movie alien that youve seen. they are radially symmetric(like a starfish) organisms, and the movie is about attempting to decipher their language, and how learning their sophisticated language affects our world view and thinking.

There are some pretty tense action scenes in Sicario, although they may not be considered explosive. But for the most part you're correct.

Seems like the type of movie that would be better without watchin that upcoming full (aka reveals too much/everything) trailer.
Well, if they manage to spoil the story, based on "The Story of Your Life", in the trailers, then they have managed to do an amazing bit of knowledge transfer for two minutes.
I reread the short story at least once a year, it is a true work of art.
But despite knowing the "twist" and there is a bit of a twist, I am still eager to see it.

Snowpiecer is one of those weird movies that some people love and others absolutely hate. I have it in my Netflix que, so I will see it eventually. I've got to admit, the premise of humanity on a speeding train is pretty ridiculous, but I'm willing to check it out.
The Ted Chiang story it's based on is haunting. Be interesting to see how/if they pull it off without giving the main character an internal monologue.

Or they arrived to help us against another extraterrestrial species, but we succumb into our fear of the unknown that make us go against the ones trying to help us...something...anything but a obvious clash. Actually I've read the short story that it's based on and it's one of the best SF I've read. All i can tell you is that your plot twist is wrong unless the director decides to change the ending. The script for this movie set a record deal of 20million so I am hoping that it'll at least make it big.

"Mahou Tsukai Tai". A japanese anime OVA that has a very similar approach to a seemingly peaceful/mysterious alien fortress. Now I don't know if the rest of the story will develop the same way, so I'll have to wait for the movie. Has anyone else here also seen MTT?

these kind of movies(oblivion, alien,interstellar,sollaris,prometheus) are my favourite. The grand scale adventure, the aliens, the mystery, the unknown and especially the cinematography that produces bliss and harmony. I don't want this to be something bigger than it should be. Just hoping to see the elements that create a descent sci fi

Well the description says that mankind is at the verge of a global war, so it could be a global war among men, and then an alien shows up
I think it's being made clear that the aliens have the potential to be hostile. That's the sources of suspense and drama in this movie, I imagine.
Alien invasion movies tend to have a sort of allegorical element, some more subtle than others. They're really more about humanity than they are about aliens, because aliens as depicted in film is purely speculative. We can't really create meaningful themes about aliens themselves because we've never met any aliens in real life and don't know what they'd be like, what they'd stand for, and how they would respond to humans. The themes are about humanity and how we think about the universe around us.
So I'm guessing this movie is sort of allegorical to America dealing with a tense political situation with another political power with a vastly different language and culture and requires careful steps to avoid pissing off and reaching peaceful resolutions. It would be fairly topical assuming that's the case. So Amy Adams is the interpreter that has to try and understand these aliens, what they want, how they feel about humans, etc. with the knowledge that fucking up could mean they start war with humans (which humans would completely be annihilated in because they're so far beyond us), and essentially reach that peaceful resolution to whatever's going on.
I don't think they're going to be depicted as evil aliens, though. More like creatures with a perspective so far beyond our understanding in terms of how they deal with other intelligences in the universe. Maybe they're trying to decide whether we're worth keeping around as potential allies, or destroyed as a potential threat, long before we're actually capable of threatening them. Sort of a precautionary measure. I can imagine humans doing the same thing if we ever manage to build an interstellar civilization and meet a variety of other alien civilizations. Of course, that's all purely conjecture since I know of this film only what I've seen in the trailer. I just think that the aliens are basically going to want to try and establish communication with humans rather than just conquer us, but the threat of being attacked by them is also very real. That's the impression I get from the description and the trailer.
The title doesn't give me the impression they're hostile, though. It's just called Arrival. That could mean literally anything. Close Encounters of the Third Kind was most definitely not a movie about hostile aliens, yet Arrival would've been a perfectly legitimate title for it.
