      Clearly they mean at 24fps, the motion is realistic enough while also having a discernible stop-motion feel about it. They're not saying it's the most fluid. They're saying it's their favorite balance of animation and reality.

    I feel like 60 breaks the illusion that the action figure is alive. It’s so smooth that I can tell exactly when it’s standing still. The roughness of 8 and 15 kinda blur the line between moving and not moving, filling in those gaps to make it seem MORE fluid despite the fact that (in terms of frame rate) it’s actually less so.

    You can get smooth movement at almost any framerate, you just have to adjust the spacing of the movements depending on the framerate and how long you want to spend on the animation. Most studios use 12, 24, or 30. Old school Disney animators would use 12 fps for slower more controlled movements, and 24fps for faster movements like a character falling. Whereas shows like Robot chicken were required by the network to animate at 30fps. So the question isn't how smooth each framerate looks, it's a question of how comfortable you are with animating at each respective framerate. Which framerate looks better to the audience depends on how good the animator is. For a more modern example, spider verse mixed framerates constantly, and yet, I wouldn't describe their use of 12 fps as looking any less smooth than 24fps. Interesting experiment though, your choice of fps is entirely preference and based on the feeling you want to come across to the audience.

    • @BainesMkII
      @BainesMkII Год назад +64

      Which framerate looks better also depends on what the audience has been conditioned to prefer. 24fps isn't a magical frame rate where movies simply look "right"; spending your life viewing movies created to a 24fps standard conditions you to view 24fps as where movies look "right". Same for other visual media. Audio as well. If you could listen to popular classical music pieces as they were performed in the years directly after they were composed, it would likely sound "wrong" to you due to having spent your life hearing a different "right" version both those pieces in particular and of music in general (where different tuning, speeds, etc have become the standard).

      What’s great about Spider-Verse’s frame rate choices is that they were made to aid the storytelling. Miles’ Spidey movements are initially done at 12FPS, while Peter’s is 24FPS throughout. This emphasises Miles being a newbie and perhaps a tad sluggish in his movements. By the “What’s Up Danger?” drop though, he’s running at 24FPS, because he’s truly mastered the skills and has become Spider-Man for real.

    With that said, there's a definite tradeoff as you go up/down, but I also don't think you're doing the 24 & 60 fps versions justice. One of the big benefits of all of those frames is that you can show more of the in-between frames, right? But that applies to both when you're holding a pose and when you're moving between key poses. I think you'd see some better results with those higher ones if you didn't hold on the static frames for as long, and filled the holds in with some slight variations and natural movement in those hold poses.

You can kind of see that without how 24 and 15 have really nice and well defined anticipation and on 60 the web seems to pop out of nowhere. I think his main focus was to keep the movement flowing and creating subtle movements can sometimes be hard to get right as it can backfire and make it look janky. Overall he did a really great job on all of the animations and it’s a really insightful video and your constructive criticisms are really well articulated and are very respectful.

    15 and 24 is the sweet spot for this kind of animation. I feel like 60 fps would fit more in a scene with less jerky movement. Sometimes jerky movements look better with less frames, like someone throwing a quick punch, or even a whole fight scene. Slower movements definitely benefit from more frames though. Slow movements at a low frame rate look a bit off. It's not about how smooth the animation is, it's how impactful the amount of frames feel in a scene. Like I said before, a hard punch feels more impactful with less frames, because it feels like the punch hits harder. On the other hand, a high frame rate fits well with a scene of someone sitting at their desk feeling bored and twiddling with their thumbs. In slower paced scenes, a higher frame rate also helps the viewer make out more tiny details. Once again on the opposite side of the spectrum, a fight scene is just meant to give the viewer a feeling of adrenaline. That means that they will very likely not pay attention to tiny details, and the lower frame rate helps it sell that

    15 fps is probably the way to go. While 24 and 60 is smoother in terms of motion, I've noticed it takes far more consideration to film at those frame rates. Subtle mistakes per frame as well as a lack of constant motion between actions makes the clips seem uncanny and stiff plus it's far more work than is needed to accomplish nearly the same results.

    Im not an animator (I do know a bit about the craft though) so I could be way off but I find this is a good showing of how you can diminishing returns when you go up in framerate, and how the framerate itself will really impact how you need to move the subject.
    The 60fps one almost felt a bit jarring to me, because it was smooth but he stops so suddenly. Spiderman is kind of "snapping" into positions where at that framerate i find myself expecting a lot more. Stuff like slight twitches, breathing, etc. The problem is that stuff would be absolutely grueling to animate, especially in stop motion lol.
    This isnt meant to be a criticism of your work, its stellar. Just an observation I had that for the kind of movements your doing here, 60fps may not be suited. Its important to keep things like this in mind when were surrounded by people saying "more fps = better animation". Interesting experiment, and great work!

      more fps in general is better, because then there is less chance it will break the illusion of movement. The thing is, making 60fps stop motion as a product is very difficult and slow, because there is way too many frames to think about to make it look good. That is why 24 fps or 15fps stop motion is the standard because of the less work needed for it. You can see in this video that spiderman in 60fps doesn’t do many actions the other spidermen did to make it more realistic. Like it is clearly animated differently to make the workflow faster, but that resulted in the animation looking stiff because he skipped movement that would make spiderman less stiff.

    as a video editor and visual content maker, i know a thing or two about stop motion and, for me in this case since it is an inanimate object i feel there’s a certain fluidity with what you can blend while mixing frame rates, so it gives it a surrealistic look at 15 fps and slowly breaks the illusion as the frame rate increases.
    A lot of filmmakers shoot certain scenes in those lower frame rates to give it a more jagged feel depending on the context or action taking place, it’s all about the story telling.
    But an excellency comparison, mon ami!

    something I really adore with animation now days, is that it's mostly animated at 24fps. But movies like Spider-verse, and Puss in Boots 2 they use both 24 frames and 12, using 24 for the more fluid and day to day animation, but then cut back to 12 frames do deliver solid, jittery, action-packed, dynamic animation that has an amazing appeal to it.

    Strangely, for this kind of hand stop motion animation, I actually like 8 the best. It has all of the clear poses that communicate what's happening, and it actually feels smoother to me. Because you can't line up the next frame machine perfect, the higher frames rates have this jitter effect that to me is distracting and doesn't add any extra info to the scene.
    Cool experiment!

      Adding to the other replies, the 60fps version was also noticeably more shaky than the others. This is likely because of there being an unnecessary number of Inbetween frames that had to be done anyways. And as a result, the difference between those frames became more apparent and distracting.
      This is also why no one produces 2d animation of more than 24fps. Because the linework would end up looking really shaky throughout, not to mention that there would be no real increase in quality of the animation

    My brain just gets used to the one I'm focusing on and than the differences between them starting hitting like a truck.
    For stop motion, I'd say I'm at the 8 to 15 range gang.
    15 basically strikes the balance between fluidity and style, but 8 just hits different in some moves.

    I think blending between 15 and 24fps for certain actions and scinarios would bring the best austhetics pop.
    I used to animate for 60 but as seen in the experiment it introduces flickering because the lights changed quickly and because the animation is moving so fast it often requires frame stops to pronounce actions but leaves visible frozen like moments in the background lighting.

    I think the winner is 24. I like how it still had a hint of that robot chicken type movement but also looks good in slow mo. To me it didn't even really look slow mo until he swings away, it just looked like the character was moving slower. Does that make sense? I think you could use that to your advantage creatively, make a movement look slower but not choppy, still fluid. But I literally have only ever animated a couple pixel art projects in my life haha so what do I know.

  • @tamayako2000
    @tamayako2000 Год назад

    Stop motion is one of those mediums that actually benefits from a lower frame rate if you ask me. A higher frame rate could work better if more subtle movements were added when a character is holding a pose, make them breathe, fidget, etc. but otherwise they kind of look like robots moving from one pose to the next. In a lower frame rate it isn't as jarring, but maybe that's just my nostalgia talking.

As the simple act of breathing displace our gravity center, we are always adjusting our balance and therefore never completely still 😉

    If anyone is wondering why the 60 fps looks so strange its most likely because it wasn't actually captured in 60fps theres tools that do something called "interpolation" that basically create new frames inbetween the ones recorded and it'll try to like smooth things over thats why when spiderman moves his arms to stretch he suddenly stops instead of doing that little back and forth motion because whatever spaceman is using to make it 60fps is probably trying to smooth out anything the computer interprets as like jitteryness
