The design of Miss Germany’s evening gown is very similar to Miss Hong Kong’s gown in the competition the year before in 1988. However, Germany carried the gown much better than Hong Kong as she has nicer long legs. The gown doesn’t compliment anyone who doesn’t have long legs or is not tall.

Excellent eye for detail! For some reason this is the one pageant from the 80’s I never saw. I was wondering if anyone else had noticed and commented. Miss Jamaica and Miss Mississippi both looked stunning although I feel the top of the gown really complimented Ms. Seawright’s short hair better than the shoulder length of Miss Jamaica.
Gosh! How the styles have changed! Most of the gowns looked like cakes and very childish! Only Miss Venezuela and Miss Mexico's gown looked like they wouldn't be too out of place if someone wore it today! And the hair, frizzy to the max! It's good that the styling nowadays have improved a lot!
Fashion taste is subjective. In 1989 that was THE fashion, and was seen then as beautiful. It's difficult judging taste in the 80s from your 2020s vantage point. Thirty years from now, people would be judging 2020s fashion as being odd and amusing.
