After washing the cylinder with soap I then wipe it down with a paper towels and WD 40 until the towels come out clean. A tip from Millennium Technologies for our snowmobile cylinders after re-plating. I'm building an 064. Rock on Tinman! 👍

tinman take a small art paint brush and use it to apply your Motoseal. you get a much more even coat and it makes the process so much easier and alot less messy!
A long time ago a gasket representative told me that if they wanted anything added to their gaskets , they wold provide it. Clean and dry with new gaskets seems to be the way to go . Thanks for the great videos.
HAHA, "If the clip isn't on right, it will go flying across your shop and you'll find it in six months." One trick I've found, is I have to look right next to the 10mm socket......hahahaha.
Hey Tinman , i just ported my Dolmar 143 a few weeks ago. First I deinstalled the sirclip in my Garage on the Workbench. It went pling and then outside the Garage it made another pling. Had my Thumb over it. That was a mad Day. I thought, i will never find it, but i was lucky. 10 Meters away it was lying on the concrete. Very near to lawn. Took 15 min searching. Now i take foil while installing, you can watch through , but the Clip can’t fly away. The 143 woke up very well . That was made by learning from you, Ironhorse and Dyno Joe . Thank you so much and keep doing these Videos.
Great video, put my Homelite XL1 together with no ring compressor, double ring as well, it was tricky for sure but doable. Much easier with a ring compressor for sure. Got a line on some 266 hope it pans out, nothing yet but I just binge watched all your 266 builds. Getting a warm fuzzy, tingling feeling inside. Can't wait to get at it. I lost my farmertec 660 kit a few weeks ago to the clutch side circlip. Probably cut 10-12 cords with it. It was a screamer and I was sad to lose it to that cheap part. The 660 was a fun saw to put together. It was the first one I did. I have a hyway cylinder and piston for it and I’ll be putting it back together when I get back from my work rotation.
Love watching your videos always good info and comical guy! Something that I've never seen in any of your videos or anyone else's videos on building and porting saws.....would be nice if you might talk about ring end gap and how you decide how much gap to have for different types of builds?? Reason I am saying this is I just built a 550xp the other day and when I checked ring end gap ring was less than .002" that's way too tight but if it was someone just building their first saw that would've been a disaster!!!! So maybe touch on how to file fit for the new guys Thanks Tinman
Thank you for your video; be careful if you use break-clean for cleaning (6:10) any painted surface it will soften the coat with possible chipping /peeling off. That stuff is v.good on bare metal only. All the best !

I’m a jackazz of all trades myself… I enjoy doing my own stuff… and learning new stuff… so it’s a good time just getting through life! And I laugh at myself a lot so that’s something that I’ve got going for me!!! I was cleaning the xl12 and it’s going to be ported too I guess… this super 1050 is a really big saw… I’ve got to tear into it so I can get my mind around getting it done with some more power… I’m going to go look at the transfer’s to see if they need to get a little matching…. I’m looking for a 5-6 foot 404 bar for her! Might as well go big!

I just installed a NOS KS top end kit on my 036 and I checked the ring end gap, but it was fine. also, as I'm sure you know, the NOS piston comes in the box with one circlip installed. and the circlip gap was up at 12 o'clock. Stihl calls for the gap to be vertical, either 12 o'clock or 6 o'clock.
Tinman, My name is mike I have a Stihl 021 when its cold it runs great, when she gets hot it stalls an you can' get to run agin till it gets cold,What could be the problem. I am an old tool maker,and do what i do to quoit a great machanic. watch you on utub every nite. keep up the good work. If you are having issues when your saw is warmed up it's usually a coil. It probably has a bare spot in the windings and when it expands from the heat it grounds out! Or next time it stops working for you try opening the fuel cap and listen carefully for any hissing or air escaping all of a sudden, If so the saw is vapor locking and needs the duck bill one way check valve replaced. The oil in your mix gets gummy if the saw sits for a period of time with fuel left in the tank and seals the end shut! The tank has to be pressurized to allow the fuel to be pushed in to the carburetor so that duck bill one way check valve is supposed to suck air into the tank and pressurize it when the saw is running without allowing it to escape. Some times you can just squeeze the tapered end and it will open it back up for you. 😉
Tinman, I have a dirty 201t that sat on a shop floor with a severed intake manifold. Did you clean the bottom end of that saw with brake clean? Also, what mix oil do you prefer? Curious. Thanks for the content. 👍
I believe that tinman uses opti 2 at a 40:1 mix ratio. I prefer amsoil saber at a 40:1 mix. Ive found amsoil saber to burn cleaner at 40:1 compared to stihl 50:1
Who makes the “ MotoSeal” that you refer to? Is it Canadian or something like Permatex or Locktite gasket maker. In 62+ years haven’t run across that name. My favorite is blue Stuff that was associated with Rolls Royce, but haven’t had any since the late 80s, was an aircraft product. Appreciate your source.
You're thinking of Hylomar. I use Threebond 1184 (AKA Yamabond/Kawibond) case sealer. Motoseal is a Permatex product (#29132 for the 2.7 oz tube) available at most autoparts stores.

Ive built farmertec 660s and 372s and always used oem circlips, never let me down.
OEM circlips on ur next build it solve that issue.
Clean your bottom end real good incase any metal got down there.

Try putting piston into cylinder partially and then put in wrist pin! Seems easier!
I never use burnt motor oil in any of my saws some guys do an think its jus as good as bar oil lol its not. Have a good week sir hope all is well!!
