  • In this video I attempt to put together a timeline of events leading up to multiple SpongeBob spin-offs being put into motion. I look at as many likely possibilities as I can to provide the most accurate information that can currently be known about the timeline. I hope to shed some light on how these spin-offs came to be and if the creator of SpongeBob, Stephen Hillenburg, could have possibly even known about the plan to make SpongeBob Nick's Marvel Cinematic Universe.

    So if I understood this timeline correctly, the only possibility of Steve endorsing Kamp Koral is if that meeting happened sometime within the last two months of this death. From that point, we'd have to assume that Nickelodeon actually bothered to inform Steve and given their history of not properly communicating with creators and prioritizing financial gain over artistic integrity, it seems unlikely. And if they did inform him, we'd have to assume that he was in a state in which he was capable of properly comprehending and responding to that information. Keep in mind that communication with Steve is said to have been difficult during that time. And from there, we'd have to assume that he indeed approved the idea of Kamp Koral and that his approval is why Nickelodeon ultimately greenlit the idea. That all seems very unlikely to me so if I had to make a call, I would say Nick disrespected him.

    Even If Nick wants to make SpongeBob as their Marvel Cinematic Universe, I rather have an official NickToons cinematic universe instead, it would be more fun to see Rugrats, Invader Zim, Rocko’s Modern Life, Jimmy Neutron, Fairly OddParents, and other non SpongeBob NickToons crossing over in one shared universe. Now that’s a true cinematic universe. Even Nick Jr. shows like Dora the Explorer and Blue’s Clues would join in as well.

      That would be a better option. I think Nickelodeon is being idiotic for trying to make SpongeBob a cinematic universe when they have Avatar: The Last Airbender to exploit at that level. It's like Sony trying to make a cinematic universe only around Spider-Man. But at least Spider-Man has the Spiderverse going for him. But that can only work within the greater continuity of the MCU.

      I do remember they kind of had that on Cartoon Network with the cartoon cartoons and how they’d all appear together in the commercials and would frequently have crossover episodes or just random characters existing in each other’s universe (my favorite example being a Billy and Mandy short that just turned out to be a dream of Wilt from Foster’s)

    I've always viewed it as probably somewhere in the middle.
    Steven probably heard an extremely basic version of the shows plot pitch (A series about Spongebob's childhood adventures with Patrick at Camp as well as when he first got Gary), said 'Ok maybe that could work' and that was all before he died. Everything else, being CGI, all the retconns, the other spinoffs, came after.
    I can believe Steve warmed up to the idea of spin-offs and wasn't inherently apposed to them anymore, and I can believe he was fine with the basic premise of Kamp Koral. I can also believe he wouldn't like how it actually turned out or the other spinoff media.
    Spin-Off Media is not inherently bad. There is a series of 10 minute episodes on the RUclips Channel called "Bikini Bottom Mysteries" that is genuinely some of the best content they've ever done.

    Personally, the fact that I haven’t been outraged by the idea of Kamp Koral is that there has never been a clear-cut answer for two things. 1. If Stephen knew about it. 2. If Stephen would’ve liked it. Those are two things to me. He was in the later stages of ALS during the earliest possible timeframe it was concieved, so he wouldn’t have been able to say yes or no, or give a thumbs up or down. That’s what mystifies me the most, that he would’ve kept it in his head. Sorry for the mild speculation, but it’s worth noting that even if he knew about or liked Kamp Koral, he wouldn’t have been able to react to it very clearly.
    For me, what annoys me the most about Kamp Koral is Nickelodeon’s way of letting the hate for it expand over time. Letting the speculation run wild without releasing some sort of statement, letting it overtake the marketing of Sponge On the Run, and then making it looked unfinished when they finally stared revealing it to the public. (That and they aired less new episodes last year than in a long time, despite plenty of episodes being ready for broadcast, really ruining my Season 12 stuff right now) That’s the disrespectful part, that’s what angers me about their treatment of Stephen Hillenburg’s characters.
    They can screw around with Craig Bartlett or Rob Renzetti or whoever, but Stephen Hillenburg gave them a hit that has eclipsed the whole Nickelodeon brand tenfold. It’s loved across the world, and has transcended most other cartoons to become a massive part of internet culture, and to see them treat it like garbage now gives me no respect for them as a corporation, even going back to their “golden age”. They ruined all 3 of their original NickToons by the end of the 90s anyway. But in a cruel twist of fate, after all these years, I feel like SpongeBob has been treated the worst of all.

      As pieguyrulz said, the fact that Nick made this show behind his back is the problem. Whether he would’ve changed his mind, or whether he would like it if he were alive today are irrelevant. The fact is, Nick made this show either after his death or when he wouldn’t have been able to give a clear yes/no answer, which is all sorts of screwed up no matter which way you slice it. Especially since we know he disapproved of spin-offs before his illness. Especially since his creative partner outright stated he wouldn't have wanted this.

    Quote from Stephen Hillenburg's SpongeBob Wikia page:
    "Hillenburg was a strong and firm proponent of "cute, stiff, on-model" animation for the characters. He was well known for being adamant about his visions for the show and for never changing his mind; he was even known to stay at the studio "late every night, going over all the storyboards, making sure SpongeBob was cute in every panel."[7] However, as his health deteriorated, the show's new crew from season 10 onward was able to get him to "loosen up" on a few of his former rules for the show. Mainly, they changed the animation from "on-model" to extremely off-model in the vein of The Ren & Stimpy Show, which many of the new crew members had worked on.[8][9]
    "
    It saddens me how this is constantly overlooked when talking about new SpongeBob episodes. Like, correct me if I'm wrong, but this seems like they pressured a man whose health was deteriorating into letting go of a part of his integrity, and he eventually gave in because I assume he wanted to be nice, since he knew he didn't have much time left. I first read about this back in 2019 and since then I've just never been able to watch anything post season 9 with a clear conscience. I already had a negative opinion of seasons 10 and 11, thinking that they were a more childish and obnoxious version of Ren and Stimpy, but this is just... eugh.

      From the sound of it; this is and I do mean this with all due respect, a situation where emotions about a passing can interfere with proper judgment and lead to rash decision-making and assumptions rather than a measured response. As far as we are aware? Basically nobody in this comment section was a part of those meetings with Stephen but because his passing is still so shocking and painful, it leads to us looking at writing like this through a fairly cynical lens.
      Now obviously there's always the possibility this could've maybe been a case where they just kept pressuring a man who was dying to let go of his principles but upon reading this with the sort of grasp I have on the kind of relationship Stephen had with the crew, it's MUCH more likely that the animators just wanted a bit more freedom on the show they were working on as a means of shaking things up and keeping things from going stagnant after doing basically the same type of animation for several years under both Stephen and later Paul.

      whether this is true or not I can safely agree that switching to more ren and stimpy esque animation was possibly the worst choice for the show. if season 7-9a's animation was too stiff then season 11-now's animation is too fucking wacky. Season 9b and 10's animation was sublime and it sucks that they didn't keep it that way.

    Where all of this got really sketchy for me is when an anonymous crew member claimed that they were working on behalf of Hillenburg's family, only to then have another crew member come forward and deny that statement. There is a lot of uncertainty as to who knew what when this was being developed. However, judging from the sneak peak we got, it is exactly how I predicted it would be, a very underwhelming show where much of the creative decisions stem from what the executives want rather than what the actual creatives want.

    One thing I've noticed about Nickelodeon is that they always try to be just like their competitors in the laziest ways possible. I feel like all of this came about because of the MCU and how popular that got, so Nick tried to do the same thing and apply the connected universe format to their most popular show with these spinoffs.
    This is how it works for them now. They watch and wait to see what gets popular with kids and then see how they can apply it to their own shows without sacrificing any of their kid friendly nature.

    The thing about this situation is that if you were to put this in front of a jury, there wouldnt be a verdict one way or another. What i mean by this is there is not enough evidence one way or another to make any decision. The timeline is definitely helpful with laying the facts on the table, but honestly none of these facts mean anything without context.
    The biggest questions i have are questions that cant be answered with facts or timelines. They can really only be answered with experience. Questions like “was there an unmentioned meeting between Steve and Nick?” “how was Steve treated given the knowledge that his colleagues could tell he wasnt well?” “is there anything wrong ethically with making a spin-off at this point?” “how long did they mourn the loss, if ever?” and most pressingly in my mind, “will Kamp Koral be good or bad? Would Steve have approved of the quality?”
    The bottom line is that Steve is dead. I know it’s harsh to say it so bluntly, but there is no other way to say it. He’s been dead for a year or so now. If this is a conspiracy, it doesnt really matter.
    I am saddened by the decisions Nick has made, but i hold impartiality until more facts become available. Until then, giving it a chance is the respectful thing to do.

    It's crazy to think that this timeline was the same timeline of my senior year of college and the starting point of that timeline being a week after the breakup between me and my boyfriend from a relationship that lasted for two years. The news about Kamp Koral and how the timing of it was not long after Stephen's passing was very off for me and leaves a sour taste into my mouth. I am still a fan of the first three seasons of the original show and the first movie but I haven't really sat down and watched the show for several years and have had no interest in the modern seasons of the show or anything that came out after the first movie. I stopped watching Nickelodeon in 2013 after the second half of Book 3 of Legend of Korra was randomly put online without any heads up and marketed the show poorly. These days, Nick feels like a ghost town because I rarely hear about anyone actually watching the channel and there has not really been anything strong to fully grab my investment back towards their work. I even went through the KCA nominations for this year and even the KCAs today don't mean anything compared to the 2000s when it was the last good decade for the awards show. They don't even care with how they decide and organize the categories for their nominees and they are so sloppily put together and don't really understand what actual cartoons or shows children/the family demographic are watching.
    Spongebob does not work for a "MCU" type of franchise expansion because the premise of the show is very light and the worldbuilding is not strong enough. The reason why other Nickelodeon properties such as Avatar got a sequel spin-off with Legend of Korra, has had several comics depicting events post-Avatar events, the fanbase growing bigger and bigger, and people WANTING more content from that franchise is because the story is more complex, had three-dimentional characters with backstories, and has a huge world with over 10,000 years of history to tell other stories and discuss about various topics such as Asian philosophy. Spongebob seems to be Nickelodeon's Mickey Mouse but even then any content that focused on Mickey Mouse such as shorts or shows like House of Mouse had thought and care put into them without disrespecting the integrity of the character nor Walt Disney and his wishes.

    Let me bring up one crucial point that is rarely touched upon in these discussions. Why would Tom Kenny, who has been a longtime friend of Hillenburg going back to the early 90s at the very least, intentionally sign on for a project that would be inherently disrespectful to his friend? If there's a second person out there in the world who is protective of SpongeBob is Hillenburg was, that person is Tom Kenny. If this was something that Hillenburg was so against that all of his colleagues knew about it, I don't think Kenny or anyone else of the cast would have signed on to something like that. You can scream money all you want like Mr. Krabs, but that's just a lame excuse to bridge your opinions together.

      I highly Doubt that Tom had anything to do with this besides I don't think he's blaming the crew. It's more on Nick/Viacom itself not Vincent Waller and in all fairness, nothing was said Until Kamp Koral was almost released.

    It's obvious what happened here. I don't blame Nickelodeon for doing it but at least wait a year or so before disrespecting the man that made you a fortune so soon after he passed. But it's really scummy because it appears even worse then we think. It's obvious by the time the pitch meeting happened. Even if it was before hillenburg's death they knew the writing was on the wall and that he would be too weak to fight against the spin offs and would rather spend his last days with family. Which to me is a lot more sick than waiting until he passed.

    Nickelodeon should've went for a Peter Rabbit shared universe instead. That would've made A LOT more sense! You have SO many characters and SO many possibilities for new stories & worldbuilding for that show's universe. Heck, the original books were mostly standalone, yet connected, so it would've made sense to have made various spin-offs, miniseries, & one-off specials starring Squirrel Nutkin, Mittens & Pig Robinson, Cottontail, & others alongside the main Peter Rabbit series!
    I'm still hoping that they bring back Peter Rabbit someday...

  • @the-aspiring-creator4249
    @the-aspiring-creator4249 3 года назад +10

    I'm of two minds on this. On the one hand? Kamp Koral to me is still such a tremendously dumb idea that had a horrifically timed announcement by people at Nickelodeon who while I grant them the fact that they obviously would have no way of knowing that Stephen was just gonna, you know, DIE doesn't change the fact that they still announced something like this way too soon after the man passed which created a bad look that people had every right to be suspicious and frustrated about. I also have to say that I'm not really big on people like Nick's president trying to pursue ideas revolving around making SpongeBob their MCU since like with every company that has tried that, it seems they're less making sound decisions because it's something they're planning and more that they're chasing a trend.
    On the other hand, I was NOT there when any of these meetings happened. I don't know Stephen Hillenburg, Paul Tibbitt or any of these people personally and I'm inclined to be an optimist who wants to look for the best and upon looking at this with all the knowledge I have from various interviews, articles and so on? Honestly I feel the answer to this whole scenario falls somewhere in the middle. I think Nick when it comes to Kamp Koral as well as the other SpongeBob spinoffs are clearly going in a very business-driven direction that ultimately I feel is not good for the show and has a very real risk of causing a form of SpongeBob burnout on a level that hasn't been seen since or may even be greater than when Nick would just keep pumping SpongeBob out left and right in the years that followed the movie... but I can't blame the crew for this. From the looks of things, they were just given a job that they want to put as much effort into as they possibly can. A job that has probably become way harder to do considering that right smack dab in the middle of all this, a creator and FRIEND passed away so suddenly and the announcement just so happened to come at the worst possible time which meant of course anyone that was on social media would be right in the crosshairs of a bunch of righteously angry people who are acting on their emotions.
    I've said this in another comment but I feel it's important to repeat here because it's something we keep seeing time and time again. Whenever someone really influential and beloved passes away, it becomes incredibly easy for emotions about that passing to seep into and interfere with proper judgment over certain situations and thus we wind up engaging in rash decision-making and assumptions rather than making a measured response. Suddenly it becomes very simple to look at something like a spinoff announcement and then have our brains jump to "THEY INTENTIONALLY WAITED FOR STEPHEN TO DIE TO ANNOUNCE THIS!" or to look at someone like Danny Giovannini and go "They're deflecting from the criticism and lying to cover themselves over this friggin' travesty!". Now does this actually mean that there is just unequivocally never the possibility that these were the case? Of course not. After all the truth is often stranger than fiction so maybe somewhere many years down the line or maybe even after a season or a few episodes of Kamp Koral, we'll have some big exposé come out which shows us this. Until then however, it should be noted that we know absolutely nothing and that while we can piece together as much as we may like from articles and various comments to try and find all the answers to this, ultimately we will never truly know because we ourselves were not a part of this equation in any meaningful way that would lead to us being privy to that kind of information.
    So with that in mind, my honest educated guess from all that has been provided is that Stephen was told about the possibility of making these spin-offs with Kamp Koral being the first one of these and he gave it his approval at the very least in a small capacity. He couldn't make any public statement because of either his health, how from what I've read he's a surprisingly private guy to a degree or simply put, it's not something he desired to share because the idea of openly telling people he approved of something might've been weird to him. In fact it's often more frequent to see a creator say they didn't approve of something or that they aren't involved than it is to see them say they are and if they do it's not done in the form of a big announcement. Anyways, then Stephen dies probably around the time they were looking to make the announcement, they decide to go ahead anyway with announcing it because at the time it seemed that maybe the idea of going through with it would show people that Stephen's creation would live on and also because they didn't want to shift gears. Of course this upsets people due to the monumentally poor-timing and thus creators and staffers are left to navigate a mine-ridden war of words with people who are already pretty emotional.

    so in short, from what I understand, here's all the possible outcomes of camp corals creation.
    -They made it with Stephen's knowledge and consent
    -he didnt like it but they went with it anyway.
    -a comment mentioned that the team got Stephen to "loosen up" on certain ideas he held for years. Maybe that included spinoffs?
    -Stephen didn't have any knowledge nor say because he was so sick, and they just went on without him.
    -They made it after he died.
    Extra possibility: that quote about Stephen essentially leaving when they babify spongebob? Maybe he wasn't kidding. It's possible he stopped coming to work right after camp corals was thought of. We need specific dates to really pinpoint these things, but it's still a possibility.

Not milked to oblivion or extended so long that it becomes a zombie franchise like the Simpsons.
    SpongeBob plummeted in the late 2000s and early 2010s, and while it has made a really great turnaround; it needs to end and allow other programs to shine on Nickelodeon without having to worry about failing to match SpongeBob ratings. Kamp Koral can be easily retooled if we base it around the throwaway line about Patrick attending community college with Flats we could simply have Spongebob attend community college and Sandy being their on a scholarship paid by those chimps and Spongebob and Patrick not remembering Sandy and vice versa with Sandy due to a misfire from an amnesia ray at the colleges science showcase retitle it Koral Days as a pun on the hit show Happy Days and we're done.

    Ignoring the controversy I think Kamp Koral is gonna be complete dogshit and based on the promos it looks like shit. It looks as if it is gonna be a braindead children show that only kids would enjoy and adults wouldn’t give a damn about because there’s nothing of substance for the adults to enjoy. I hate Seasons 10-13 for that exact same reason. The episodes are just stupidly fast paced and they just throw shit and see what sticks just like Teen Titans Go. There’s no thought process with the episodes not like in Seasons 1-3

      The only value I can see adults getting out of it is seeing their favorite characters in a new setting and maybe some cameos, that's the only thing I find appealing at least.

    • @funnyclown2514
      @funnyclown2514 3 года назад +4

      @@TuesdaysArt I kind of see that as a desperate attempt to get Adults to watch it. Besides it seems as if it's the only setting in the entire show. I'm really hopping for this show to just crash and burn but it's Spongebob the biggest cash cow of Nickelodeon so it's not looking like it...

    • @TuesdaysArt

      @@funnyclown2514 Camp Lazlo got some mileage out being set inside of a summer camp. I doubt Kamp Koral will get as weird or be as creative as Camp Lazlo but it's not impossible to pull off. (Ironically, people called Camp Lazlo a SpongeBob ripoff and now SpongeBob is ripping off Camp Lazlo.)
      As interesting as the premise might be, I could always write my own camp AU fan fiction that has stuff I doubt they'd ever put in Kamp Koral.

    • @funnyclown2514
      @funnyclown2514 3 года назад +1

      @@TuesdaysArt I barely even remember that show I mean no one talks about or memes that show as much as Spongebob the only times I really noticed it are when they had a video game on the Game Boy Advance in 2006 and in 2007 they had McDonalds Happy Meal toys but by 2008 they just threw in the tunnel and ended the show. Most of the episodes in that show weren't very good there's only a few that I could say were half-decent. And seeing as how the creator Joe Murray has no interest in the show making a comeback we'll just have to leave it at that.
