Hi Sweet Friends,Today, I am continuing a THREE-PART SERIES that you won't want to miss! Part 1 covered What is a Prepper Pantry which you can watch here: ruclips.net/video/HfT36M7PjeM/видео.html Part 2 covered How to Stock a Prepper Pantry with Real Food which you can watch here: marysnest.com/how-to-stock-your-prepper-pantry-with-real-food/ And now in Part 3 I’m covering How to Stock Your Prepper Pantry for $5 a Week.
I have received so may emails from folks who were caught totally off-guard when this pandemic quarantine hit. They were in the process of transitioning from a processed foods kitchen to a traditional foods kitchen but never thought of creating a plan for stocking their “extended pantry”. (The 4th “corner” of the Four Corners Pantry where we keep our back-up food supply.) They shared with me that they NEVER want to be in that position again where they have so little food on hand!
So, in response to those emails - and to help all of you who may have been in the same boat - but now want to implement a plan to create a “Prepper Pantry”, I have put together this Three Part Series starting today and running through Sunday. If you subscribe to my RUclips channel but have not clicked the notification bell, be sure to do so, if you want to be notified when each of these videos is released.
I really hope this series helps those of you who are knew to “Prepping” and extended pantry and hopefully I share a few helpful tips and ideas even for us more experienced preppers!

Its easy to be calm when you've been doing it for years. I've been prepping since 2008. Once a year usually in October because that's when my church does their food drive, I go through my canned food stocks and donate anything past the BB date. Since I do it every year and canned goods can still be good after several years I'm confident its still quite safe. Every time I go grocery shopping I buy a few items on sale that I know I'm going to use. I also have a small list that I keep in my purse with items listed that I know I don't have in sufficient amounts and that I'm going to need in the future. I started out with beans and rice--that's the easiest. The rest came in time. You can live on just rice and beans almost indefinitely. Make sure you keep a good vitamin supplement on hand. I concentrated on just a few things when I got started that would give me the basic nutrients I needed to keep me healthy and keep me from getting sick. These are: Rice--energy, Canned meat--Protein & essential fats, Beans--Protein, Lemon/Lime Juice--Vitamin C, Nuts & Seeds--B Vitamins, Omegas, Zinc, Milk/Cheese--Vitamin D & good fats. The best nuts & seeds are Walnuts, Pistachios, & Brazil Nuts. Nuts contain key minerals like Magnesium & Potassium. Always keep Brazil nuts on hand as they contain Selenium and Selenium is ESSENTIAL. When you can invest in a dehydrator and a vacuum sealer--these will be worth their weight in gold! Pick up a spice or two when you can. I dehydrate mine to extend life. If you commit to buying one each of these items whenever you go shopping, your pantry will be full in no time! Miss Mary is a wealth of knowledge and will guide you on your "prepper" path. You will be so glad you did!!! Blessings!!!

Many years ago we had a blizzard and bitterly cold weather for an extended time. The ponds froze all the way to the bottom and we had to take the cows a half mile and back every day. And after we got to the spring the ice was still 6" thick to be cut. My hubby was working 12 hour shifts, gone from before daylight til after dark. That left me to do all the everyday manual labor stuff. I was used to hard work, but didn't take into account this was going to take such a toll on my body. A few days into the hard stuff I started feeling faint. My mother-in-law; a survivor of many such rough stretches; knew immediately what it was. She said Linda you need to eat. I said I am eating. She insisted not enough for something like this. I eventually figured out I was burning 5,000+ calories a day! I for sure wasn't eating enough to keep from loosing weight. If people are storing up for rough times, they need to consider things might not be a 9 to 5 in some emergency situations. You might be having to walk to a neighbor's well or chopping stovewood, things you normally don't have to do. Small packaged, high calorie, nutritious snacks to fill in the gaps might be a good idea.

Biggest surprise was the prices. So cheap. Compared to norwegian prices yours seems to be minimum half up to a fifth (maybe ever cheaper) of our prices. Also, you have so many huge packages. I've never seen bags of flour that big... our largest are 2 kg (2.4 pounds). Another thing... we don't have coupons. However, we have 3 for the price of 2. FUN FACT: We have a groceries chain named Kiwi; for years they welcomed people to look for wares that expire that day or the following day. If you found something you got it for free (this offer har been discontinued). The last few years there has been a lot of talk and information about expiration and best before dates, opened vs. unopened packages, and encouraged to not throw out still edible food/drink.
Thank you so, so much for this series. I've learned so much. Again, greetings from Norway, Tonje.

I have a few young ladies that wanted to do organic foods for their babies. They know from their husbands that I do scratch baking and cooking.
One young lady at the beginning of the lockdown called because she was only at the beginning of cooking classes (Jams & Jellies) and her husband was quarantined not because he was sick, but because someone on his fire crew was positive. She was short cash, what food could she get to fed her family cheap.
Made her a copy of my Menus, Recipe Binder (it encludes Condiments, too), Inventory Lists and Notes on long term preservation of all the items.
I walked her thru everything then let her and her husband shop my pantry for a month of groceries.

I recommend going to an ethnic store and buy your rice. Most Asian markets sell jasmine rice in 25 or 50 pound sacks for about 75 cents per pound. You can do the same with basmati rice by going to an Indian grocery store. You can also buy a large variety of beans peas and lentils in bulk there as well as a wide selection of spices.

Hey canned chicken - open can, rinse in colander in the sink, let water drip out. Make up 50 percent of diced green pepper, celery, onions (options: carrots, cabbage, radishes). Put together, Toss. Add 1 tsp or so of powdered/granulated garlic. Mix with enough mayo to stick together/preferred consistency. Salt/Pepper to taste. Refrigerate at least 1 hour. Use chicken salad on regular salad or for sandwiches. THIS IS EASY AND AWESOME Sauce! (remember 50 percent chicken, 50 percent veggies). Trust me, it is easy and tastes exceptional. TRY THIS!
Canned chicken can also be used in fried rice, pad thai, etc.

I’m here from The Daily Connoisseur....this is invaluable information!! I actually have been doing this since the pandemic started. I sat down and figured out how much my husband would need to eat for a month of NON perishable foods. It took a while! And then my husband gave me an extra $10 a week to add to the list. I store everything in half gallon jars and wrote on the glass with a grease pen the expiration date so I can rotate through them. I quickly got a month worth stocked....I’ve been adding to it still. I purchased a 50 lb bag of organic rolled oats from the Amish store cheaper than name brand non organic oats from the grocery store. (Those are stored in the freezer) Another thing I’ve stocked up on is stevia. It’s a very small footprint as opposed to sugar, and it’s something we regularly enjoy to make our oats more enjoyable. We are also going to purchase a gas camp stove to have on hand. And I played with “hay box”cooking in a well made picnic cooler and blankets. That way I can cook beans and rice with FAR less fuel if there’s a shortage. This pandemic made me (and a lot of people!!) realize we NEED to do this. Only thing I didn’t like about your video is the many many interruptions with ads. But I know that’s not your fault. I’m going to check out the rest of your videos. Soooo enjoyable! Thank you for the information and the hard hard work to put all this together.

You have such a valuable teaching voice. You mention canned chicken which I always have around. I don't use it on a frequent basis, but I do find it is my favorite way to make chicken salad. Some advice I have heard is "store what you eat and eat what you store." The question I like to ask people is "what do you eat?'' "What do you want your food to do for you?"

Thank you Mary for this wonderful informative video. Good timing for me.
After my house burnt down 18 months ago my new house is currently being built & will be ready to move into in a few weeks. Due to having some fruit trees I had learnt to preserve fruit. Collected bottles for future preserves. I had intended to grow my own veggies before the house fire.
Now in my new home I've had 2 pantries built in. One as kitchen pantry & other as prepper pantry.
I've been working hard building 2 huge composts & working some veggie ground areas so that's they'll be ready to go plant with my saved heritage seeds.
I can't wait to stock my new prepper pantry with the fruit, jams & veggies that I've kept stored in boxes. I've also made some fermented foods & fermented medicines (honey, garlic, lemon & ginger). I have an amazing mulberry tree & I've made my own mulberry liqueur.
    Wonderful stuff!
Of course I'll be continuing with all of this as the seasons go. But at least I have a good start.
Next was to consider canned & packaged foods as you've described here.
Great ideas for those of us who have very little money to live on at the best of times. I'm grateful to you & will be watching your other videos.
Much love & greetings from Australia. ❤😀🖐🇦🇺
By the way I think it's a good idea to have extra toilet paper, washing powder, dish detergent & general bathroom items. Also some basic women's products & men's products & first aid & basic medicines like paracetamol & antiseptic for wounds. .
Getting little by little as much as you can afford with your regular shopping is invaluable. You may also be able to swap or barter some items if the need arises in the future.
Times are only going to get harder.
Watch Ice Age Farmer utoob channel to learn about planned world wide famines.
God bless you Mary & your family & to everyone else here. ❤😀❤😀

I was building my emergency food pantry (I don’t dare to call it prepper) but being in an apartment now makes me feel very fragile and unprepared. Don’t even have my own piece of land here, freezer fits 3 bags of frozen food 🤦🏻‍♀️! Kids are grown and gone, so I’m by myself -not where anyone wants to be in these times. Any advice?

Hello there :) First, I really want to thank you, Mary, for all of your wonderful advice. I feel like I am listening to my mother giving me advice and it is very heartwarming. I wanted to make a comment on the ghee. My mother used to make ghee once a year, when butter went on sale around Thanksgiving, or other major holidays where baking prevalent. Traditional ghee is made from cultured butter, which is when you have those important vitamins such as K2 generated. I know that cultured butter is expensive and/or difficult to find. But, she would melt 8 lbs or so of butter over low heat for a couple of hours, until brown bits settled on the bottom. She would strain it and that's it! Ghee that lasted all year for our family of 4. We used to spread those brown bits on toast with some sugar and cinnamon for a slightly tangy, buttery treat.

Many thanks! I have a nicely stocked pantry, and I have even relied on it a couple of times, when times were hard.. As well, I make sure to use stuff before it's expired, which also makes life affordable during these times. Many thanks Mary! 🙏

Hi Lori, thank you so much for the kind words. I’m glad you enjoyed the series. Don’t feel sad. I’m going to do more of these videos periodically over the next month and beyond on this topic. I was just anxious to get these three out as a set so that people could get started. I’ll be talking about storage containers, more supplies, so on and so forth. We’ll cover a lot of great things together. Love, Mary❤️🤗❤️

We have been stockpiling since 2019 and have all four corners overflowing. My husband would like us to use up everything in the freezer so he can defrost it.
We have a little over $3000 in debt and $200 a week for household expenses including medicine, pets, gifts, clothing, food, etc..
We have chosen to have an austerity time to pay off our debt so we have reduced our spending to $25 per week for food. Other NECESSITIES can come out of a deferred spending account.
All three adult family members are cooking once a week, but shows like yours are inspiring me to be creative and cook more often. This is going well.
However, I'm having trouble with the rotation. When the freezer is finally empty, how can I afford to refill it? From my prepper pantry, do I go ahead and use things like powdered eggs and butter that I only planned to use in a real energency?
I got a bucket of 25 year survival food. Do we rotate through that?
My concern is that we come out at the end of this austerity period and find we can't replace things because of scarcity or inflation, but to continue to restock when we have so much seems silly. Can you help me with a strategy?
