I personally feel there's a case for Columbus being #1 overall. I mean, has any other team in the history of professional sports gone the first 23 years of their existence with only six playoff appearances and a single series win? Say what you will about Arizona and Buffalo, but at least they've seen a conference final. Columbus is the only team in the entire NHL other than Seattle, which has the excuse of literally being only two years old _and_ came fairly close to getting there this past postseason, to have never reached that point.
Toronto should be the most miserable Canadian team, and fourth honestly, maybe even third, because of that one playoff series win that came recently, and only that. Edmonton has done more since the salary cap than them, and arguably even Buffalo.
I'm curious, Calgary has less misery than Ottawa, but Ottawa reached the Conference and Stanley cup while Calgary hasn't made it out of the first round? Am I missing something? I know it is only a spot. Just curious on how it was presented made me question it.

@@JO11190 Yes, I'm aware. The ducks won the cup immediately after the cap was introduced. It shouldn't have the same "value" as the Avalanche's cup win in 2022.
There's something to be said about a consistent 1st round elimination. At least if a team has highs and lows they can see good draft picks in their off years but for a team like Minnesota that is always in the run to barely make the post season only to get eliminated 1st round it becomes a stagnant disappointment.

Any Montreal fan will tell you your misery index is off for us because any year we don't win the Cup we are the saddest fans in the NHL Winning the Cup is the only reason to play the game. A really enjoyable video.
One thing that helps us at the top in AZ, NY (Buf) and OH is that basically all of our professional sports teams have been miserable to watch over this exact same period, so that kind of mutes expectations. I root for the Jackets, Reds, and Browns LOL
CBJ fan here, full disclosure. I would have liked to hear what other factors have contributed to the misery for top 10 teams. For example: My CBJ have been miserable outside of that magical, ancient upset of Tampa, for pretty much their entire exisfence. Since the introduction of the salary cap; The CBJ have drafted bust after bust after bust in the 1st round. The only player to really stick in the NHL was Steve Mason. Nikolai Zherdev had 1 or 2 good years, then got traded to Ottawa and flamed out. Nikita Filatov, didn't last 1 full season. On the flip side, a late round pick during those years has become a phenomenal, integral part of a recent Stanley Cup roster. His name (when he was drafted by the CBJ) was Jonathan Audy-Marchessault. He toiled in the AHL for years before going to Florida and establishing himself as an NHLer, and then goes to Vegas and dominates. The entire time the CBJ had a superstar-in-waiting toiling in the AHL, they gained a reputation for being located in a small country city more concerned with the college football team 2 exits down the highway, not a destination where free agents want to play. Skip a few years. Rick Nash is retired. Nick Foligno is the beloved captain, and Matt Calvert cements his place in the hearts of CBJ fandom by taking a puck to the face and coming back to score the GWG in the same game. Meanwhile, Pierre-Luc Dubois is drafted to be the guy who will soon be the bona-fide #1 center they've long needed. Nope. A few years later he's given up on the team and wants traded. The Jackets also had the impending doom of upsetting Tampa, only to see waiting Brad Marchand, Zdeno Chara, and David Pastrnak in the second round. They crash back to earth. But the second asteroid to hit is the knowledge that Matt Duchene, Artemi Panarin, and Sergei Bobrovsky are most likely headed elsewhere when free agency comes up. But not all hope is lost. Dubois is traded for Laine, and hey, we finally have someone fans across the NHL actually know about. Syke. There goes Oliver Bjorkstrand to Seattle. Oh and RIP Kivy. Greatest save ever made. Change my mind. But hey!! Great news!! JOHNNY FREAKING HOCKEY GAUDREAU just signed a long term deal with us!! He's gonna play with Laine ... 1st game of the season, Laine's hurt. Okay Laine's back .. but Johnny's hurt. Johnny's back ... and Laine's hurt again. Okay well at least we're in prime position to get Connor Bedard. There's no way we dont get Bedard after we've been so destroyed by the injury bug that our AHL team is now playing NHL games, right? RIGHT? The Chicago Blackhawks have won the 2023 Draft Lottery after obviously tanking their season. The Blue Jackets will be compensated with the 3rd overall selection. Pray Jarmo doesnt do anything insane. And here we are today. In that same time span ... Kevyn Adams royally f*cked up with Jack Eichel.
Buffalo can’t even top the misery index, dang. But as a Buffalo fan, I need you to crunch those numbers again, something isn’t adding up. Should be a multiplier for consecutive years without playoffs, that should put us number 1
For Montreal fans across Canada, seeing them as the top playoffs team in canada is funny and sad at the same time. yes they did have good runs but also didn't make the playoffs alot of years also. the sad part come from that no other GM in canada did better than Bergevin and that is appaling to me.
Hawks fan here. We had alot of if not the most misery before the '08 season. However 3 Stanley Cups in 6 years, multiple deep playoff runs and now Connor Bedard. Cannot complain.
As a flames fan my viewpoint on the team is always “ownership is content with just being okay, doesn’t feel like they wanna take that step to being elite” and well yeah I think this proves that.
I'm 32. Don't remember 94. My life as a Rangers fan is filled with nothing but hope and pain. Was shocked to find us so low on the misery index. As great as playoff success is, being close but not good enough for an entire lifetime is really miserable. Not that I disagree with THG's algorithm, just feels like maybe I should be more grateful? Hard though. Would love a cup I can remember.
Isles fan since 95. I had to wait 8 years to even see a playoff appearance. Almost twenty years to see a playoff series win. 28 years later and still no finals appearance or even a division title.
Leafs are number one. Cheering for a perpetually bad team is fun, I'm an Orioles fan. The one year in ten they are decent is awesome and the rest are full of comraderie with the other loyal fans.
You know what’s funny… if you look at the on-ice product… I agree.. AZ then Buf… but as someone who grew up in Buffalo and a Sabres fan starting with their first finals appearance… who now lives near Glendale… People in Buffalo worry more about the team.. here in the Phoenix area.. it’s like few really care.. they are just there.. and that to me is sad.. many just are looking forward to them leaving… as a fan of the game… I find it appauling.. oh there are a few who love the team.. But most really only care about the Suns, D-Backs or the Cards.. the Coyotes.. most seem to even forget they exist… in Buffalo, The sabres are at the very fabric of the city.. them and the Bills.. (and snow in the winter). Really a different attitude, and maybe it does come from the fact that there are 4 pro teams here in the valley… and only 2 in Buffalo after we lost the Braves in the late 70’s.. and lost our MLB bid to Denver…
Absolutely right. Born and raised in Buffalo. Once a Sabres fan always a Sabres fan. They’re part of the city. I follow the Coyotes because they’re scrappy and they play hard. It’s really tough to play in a city that doesn’t seem to care and for the ownership that let things get to this point. I hope the team manages to stay in AZ.
Not #1 shockingly. Thing is Buffalo has millions of fans across the world, Coyotes have like 17 so the impact it has is far greater on Sabres fans. The NHL and the world in general is a much better place when the Sabres are good, nobody gives a fudge about the Coyotes.
Love this idea. You inspired me and I did my own Ended up with 4 happiest playoff teams 1.Pittsburgh 2. tampa Bay 3.Boston 4.Chicago Four unhappiest 29. Florida 30, Buffalo 31. Arizona 32. Columbus The Oilers are only 28th for me and Vegas falls out for me behind boston and chicago All very interesting Seattle comes out 18th for me with the second round advance balancing the second round run for net zero.
This video is actually a great testament to the parity the NHL enjoys nowadays. Only a handful of teams (Seattle, Arizona, Minnesota, Columbus and Winnipeg) on that list haven't ever been to a Stanley Cup final, and I counted only 7 teams that haven't been to the finals in at least the last 25 years. I think the only thing I find a bit worrying is that despite the introduction of the Salary Cap, Canadian teams have continued struggle significantly more than the US-based teams. This is ironic because the Salary Cap really was supposed help negate any financial disadvantage the Canadian teams were suffering from, which I don't believe they do.
They have a financial disadvantage if they can't charge 30% more for tickets than the US franchises because they pay their salaries in USD. Not to mention the elephant in the room - states that have no income tax. Teams in Florida, Nevada, Tennessee and Texas have a considerable advantage over Canadian teams, California-based or New York-based teams.
@@jeffreym.8957 I might be mistaken, but I believe the NHL does have some kind of revenue sharing between the top earners and the financial bottom dwellers. But that is perhaps beside the point because I am pretty sure that (as of today) most of the Canadian teams max out the salary cap just like the US teams. And the difference in state income tax certainly hasn't had a major impact on where players chose to play.
Sens fan here, I love your vids, but my goodness I know WAY more devils fans who are just living life right now looking at their present and past vs flyers fans
Minnesota has to be higher. They didn’t even make a conference finals appearance from 05-06 to now. They’re literally what the capitals who would have been if they never won the cup
Good example of how Math might be logic based, but it can't equate to emotion. Idc what any Math says... The Toronto Maple Leafs are without a doubt number 1 in terms of fan misery. Not a single doubt in my mind.
Canucks fan here. I think our misery only really started after 2012. That's when things started to fall apart. But up until then, I didn't feel much misery. (Been a nucks fan since early 90's)
I love the Chicago Blackhawks. Even though they have been mediocre at best since they last won the Stanley cup 8 years ago, I was ecstatic about the the state and direction of the team before drafting Bedard, and super duper ecstatic about the state and direction of the team after drafting Bedard. Recently dominating the league for a 7 year stretch certainly helped in my happiness. However, before the lead up to the dynasty, I was about as miserable as a hockey fan can be.
Got to say, I agree with the "Math Avoidance" but regular season means a lot. My Blues were picked for YEARS to win it all and losing in the first round hurt that much more.
I wonder why Carolina is so high up? They did have an cup win in 06 which should be counted? Or is it just that its so bad that even with that counted they are still so high up in this ranking?
I think part of the difficulty for me with agreeing/disagreeing with some of this is that i'm young enough that my memory doesn't really reach that far back. as a kings fan, i remember not being happy when the ducks won, but that's about it. i do think that there is some difficulty with not giving any credence to anything occurring with intangibles. you account for losses, but as best i can tell, choking doesn't get measured as extra points against.
As a Pittsburgher who is old enough to remember Bossy & Trottier torching us for 8 goals a night. Plus the I’ll fated X-Generation I know some tough times are ahead. I can’t complain though we’ve had 5 cups (plus a final loss), and about 30 years worth of generational talents.
I say this as a diehard flames fan. If you're just talking about playoffs, the Flames should be way higher. They've won a grand total of 2 playoff series since the cap was implemented. (3 if you want to count the play-in season) and have lost 9 which includes a series against Edmonton where they completely sh*t the bed. Even the team just ahead of them, the Senators, in that time, have made a Stanley Cup final, a conference final and have won at least 2 more playoff series that I can think of. I'd say if you're taking into account both regular season and playoffs, they're in about the right spot. But just playoffs, it's been way more miserable. It's not been Leafs, Blue Jackets, Sabres, Coyotes bad (Although the latter 2 have made runs to the conference final in that time) but more miserable than a lot of the teams you have ahead of them.
Toronto Maple Leafs fan here, boy is life just hell as a fan of this team even when you get to see something remotely close to success (first round agaisnt the lightning) it's all for not (second round against Florida)
Seattle has won as many rounds as Toronto so they should be just as miserable as them. It was the best argument for Seattle fans I could come up with. Excellent video as always!!

@@Marixa1979 No, it's definitely not! You can't just make up stuff. Atlantic had four great teams and their worst team, the Habs, had 10 points more than the other cellar-dwellers.
The records tell the story - not particularly close:
Strongest to Weakest
Atlantic - 761
Metro - 730
Pacific - 718
Central - 717
@@jeffreym.8957 The Pacific was the only division that had 4 teams at or above 100 points, and the Flames who were 5th in that division had more points than Florida.
Great to see the good old "Kansas city Scouts " jersey. Big ups. 👍
Seattle fan here - Honestly i could argue the Kraken could be at 8 instead of VGK. The reason for that? Everyone - the team, the fans, EVERYONE was so happy with the amount of progress the team made. Win, lose, everyone was there for it, everyone was cheering and happy. Did it sting getting knocked out on a game 7 and not get to see the Chaos Bowl WCF? Yeah of course, but at the same time nothing but happiness towards the Kraken boys, and from them as well. It's a scrappy team, with so many chips on their shoulders they should be in the Louvre, but they'll be back and they'll be hungry.
Well actually i take that back, the Avalanche probably weren't happy with the amount of progress they made haha
Absolutely not. Call back in 20 years. Pal.
@@yoholmes273 _David Attenborough voice_ And here we have a classic example of Saltius Extremius Fanus. The Saltius is known to strike out blindly without knowing or comprehending what's in front of them. They blindly attack even friendlies because the salt exuded has run into their eyes and prevents them from seeing what's one inch in front of their face. Seriously though, dude, what exactly are you taking offense to? That the Kraken are the team in the least amount of misery on the pacific coast? That the fans were happy with the way the season turned out? We're talking about this year, not last year, not next year. Chill out, try to take things less seriously - you'll live far far longer. And i'm not your Pal, buddy.
Started following Tampa back in 2009 because I really liked to play with them on NHL09 and yeah it has been a fun ride so far 😄.
Just what I needed as a sort thru my Upper Deck
I didn't realize the futility of the Sabres was pretty much neck-n-neck with the Yotes. Yikes.
San Jose and New York ahead (behind) of actual cup winners means the formula needs to be tweaked.
yeah I thought San Jose would be much more miserable
Enjoyed watching this on my lunch break. You all heard the man, fingers crossed for Jersey let's go.
Great video! Looking forward to more of these
Love the Scouts attire! My first NHL game was a Scouts game!
as a sabres fan I quote Sir Winston Churchill "this is not the beginning of the end but the end of the beginning"
Enjoy the concept of the list but I think there should be a way to factor in recent success or at the least diminish the points subtracted from success over a decade ago.
This list is since the introduction of the cap
@@JO11190 Yes, I'm aware. The ducks won the cup immediately after the cap was introduced. It shouldn't have the same "value" as the Avalanche's cup win in 2022.
There's something to be said about a consistent 1st round elimination. At least if a team has highs and lows they can see good draft picks in their off years but for a team like Minnesota that is always in the run to barely make the post season only to get eliminated 1st round it becomes a stagnant disappointment.
imagine being a fan of both the leafs and wild
@@Pikabo0 imagine being a fan of the Wild, Vikings, and Twins…year round misery.
But making the playoffs is still exciting. There is always hope if you make the dance.
if you count the bubble year they’ve advanced beyond the first round the same amount of times as columbus in the cap era. which is wild
@@UserName-ts3sp fun fact, that series against Vancouver is what made me a wild fan. Yes I hate myself.
I'm 4 minutes in absolutely dreading where the Leafs end on this hahahaha. Thx for the content THG!
Fun video, not a chance Caps or Blues are more miserable than us.
I appreciate your encouragement for Minnesota 😞👍🏽🏒
pain
Minnesota still has a team?
As a oilers fan this is valid there been a lot of dark years until recently
It is a beautiful day out for me as well. I wanted to go golfing but I kept getting phone calls, waking me up and when I woke up there were just a few hours until work so i decided to stay home on such a beautiful day
Any Montreal fan will tell you your misery index is off for us because any year we don't win the Cup we are the saddest fans in the NHL Winning the Cup is the only reason to play the game.
A really enjoyable video.
Yes, we get it. Habs fans are at the top of the "Entitled" index.
For example:
My CBJ have been miserable outside of that magical, ancient upset of Tampa, for pretty much their entire exisfence.
Since the introduction of the salary cap;
The CBJ have drafted bust after bust after bust in the 1st round.
Misery Index - Great Band 🤘
I'd love to know the formula for figuring all this out. This all makes sense and it's very interesting.
If you ask New Englanders, Boston would be ranked #1 because we havent won 20 cups in the last 20 years.
Your obviously not a Minnesota fan. We feel more pain than anyone else.
a cup i cant remember would be better than one that doesnt exist. this comment from san jose, ca.
Not gonna happen bub.
Isles fan since 95. I had to wait 8 years to even see a playoff appearance. Almost twenty years to see a playoff series win. 28 years later and still no finals appearance or even a division title.
Rangers pre 94 were the Leafs. Now you know why Messier is a god
It's easy to forget now but the Pacific used to have the road trip of death through California.
As a Buffalo fan, Thank you for visually showing me my misery.
i say it every time i love the osgood shout outs!
Sabres can't even win this...😢
Leafs are number one. Cheering for a perpetually bad team is fun, I'm an Orioles fan. The one year in ten they are decent is awesome and the rest are full of comraderie with the other loyal fans.
The jersey for the Misery Index should have been the California Golden Seals! That was a miserable team from top to bottom.
California Golden Seals 🦭 for the WIN!
Boy, the Habs sure did fleece the chit out of those poor basterds.....
@yoholmes273 I bet that La Fleur sent a Christmas Card every year to the GM of the Seals... "Merry Le Christmas and Merci for not drafting me."
I’m so ready for hockey
Vancouver at 10 is criminal, we have to be top 5 easily
Oh yeah 💯 %
Vancouver, sadly, blows.
Misery index per decade would be interesting to see
Hey look! Something the Coyotes are actually first in!
Randy Smith was my favorite Brave. Still have my hat from the 70s.
Oh boy, I wonder where the Sabres are ranked!
Not #1 shockingly. Thing is Buffalo has millions of fans across the world, Coyotes have like 17 so the impact it has is far greater on Sabres fans. The NHL and the world in general is a much better place when the Sabres are good, nobody gives a fudge about the Coyotes.
@@axe2grind244 this is the nicest thing I’ve read about them in a while, thank you
My Blue Jackets getting to the Conference championship in the misery competition is banner worthy
I will never forget Nashville kicking the absolute shit out of Chicago for four entire games in a row😂
Love this idea.
You inspired me and I did my own Ended up with 4 happiest playoff teams
1.Pittsburgh 2. tampa Bay 3.Boston 4.Chicago
Four unhappiest
29. Florida 30, Buffalo 31. Arizona 32. Columbus
The Oilers are only 28th for me and Vegas falls out for me behind boston and chicago
All very interesting Seattle comes out 18th for me with the second round advance balancing the second round run for net zero.
I get the metric but if you have McDavid and Draisatl and you're still 4th overall here, that's on you. If that's "misery" they can cry me a river.
1 and 5 unfortunately, luckily I am moving to Denver next month, so now my local team will be a good one!
Minnesota has to be higher. They didn’t even make a conference finals appearance from 05-06 to now. They’re literally what the capitals who would have been if they never won the cup
Misery of being a lifetime C'nuck fan... been there for the same length of time as you Shannon... considering I'm just 1 year older than you
Good example of how Math might be logic based, but it can't equate to emotion.
Blame benning
"They've only been in the league two years, you're not gonna have that much misery built up for two years are ya?"
*glances at Kansas City Scouts*
I love the Chicago Blackhawks. Even though they have been mediocre at best since they last won the Stanley cup 8 years ago, I was ecstatic about the the state and direction of the team before drafting Bedard, and super duper ecstatic about the state and direction of the team after drafting Bedard. Recently dominating the league for a 7 year stretch certainly helped in my happiness. However, before the lead up to the dynasty, I was about as miserable as a hockey fan can be.
And Im guessing learning about all the Beach stuff spoils it.
As a jackets fan I completely agree with your ranking.
Shannon would love to see a misery board based on salary cap problems and past/future cap decisions and implications
As a sharks fan it sucks we didn’t get a cup but we were definitely spoiled for such a long time of being competitive
Great video. I would love to see that same thing if you added some weighting.
Interested to see more of these
As a Pittsburgher who is old enough to remember Bossy & Trottier torching us for 8 goals a night. Plus the I’ll fated X-Generation I know some tough times are ahead. I can’t complain though we’ve had 5 cups (plus a final loss), and about 30 years worth of generational talents.
Didnt Carolina when a cup in the salary cup era in 2006?
