I felt that discussion dragged a bit and should have ended when Vinny said that the story in the game didn't make sense unless you played the two other games. Meaning the story by itself isn't that great.
Danny Beshara I just think there's a difference between "You'll appreciate it more if you've played the previous games" and "You need to play the two other games to even know wtf is going on". I felt like Vinny was saying the latter about the game.
You can perfectly show up for Zero Time Dilemma and understand most of what's going on, there's just two big ways in which the story kind of falls flat without having played the other two games (there's a few characters from previous games who are there which doesn't seem to make sense with the timeline which adds some intrigue that the game plays with, and 1 of the 8 endings is there only to set up game 2, which this is a prequel to). That said, Zero Time Dilemma has by far the weakest story in its series and I think doesn't belong anywhere near this list, and whilst it's makes sense standalone, the story is definitely seriously improved by having played the first two games (largely because then you're primed for the nonsensical way that characters act in these games, which is way amplified here and might be frustrating for a first time player).
Nesnomis it was also the weakest game in the 999 trilogy. i'd fight for 999, maybe even ZE, but ZTD felt too rushed for me to consider it a good story. and i don't even like Firewatch
So pleased Dan got Stardew Valley on there. I love Brad but there is some hypocrisy in how he managed to fight Dota and Destiny on to these lists in the past and then have no movement most of the time on similar passion entries. But hey it's a silly little list and it doesn't really matter. In fact the occasional cut throat nature of the Top 10 discussions is always fun.
Though, Brad did admit that on this video. He said while he doesn't agree at all he can't go against the idea of one guy only being passionate about the game after Destiny.
It gets a little too real whenever he says stuff like "you're insane if you think x is better than y" since that goes against the very nature of these award shows. But, like you said, it's a silly list with no real significance and I also enjoy watching the more lighthearted cutthroat moments.
Ya the Destiny stuff is polarizing. Its a good game to sink alot of hours into, but alot of rough spots at vanilla launch. Taken King and Forsaken still the best times for d1 and d2 in my eyes!
So pumped. Made it this far, about to start watching it. Best podcast series of the year, always look forward to it and end up buying the top games i haven't played yet. Been listening to you guys every week for years and years. Love that you take the time to battle it out for us and have this on video even though I always listen to the podcast on the way to work. Time to crack open a bottle of scotch, rip open a bag of beef jerky and enjoy. Thanks you guys.
I'll say this about game stories. The most hilarious trend I've noticed over the last few years is achievement/trophy notifications popping up partway through a cutscene that spoil the cutscene. It's like if, in Empire Strikes Back, when Luke's hand gets cut off, an achievement would pop up called "I Am Your Father."
Dan saying he never felt bored made me realize how much I enjoy that game. Despite there being a ton of monotony in that game, I never found myself bored. Somehow, the game was able to keep me interested in doing the same thing over and over.
My personal top 10: 10.INSIDE 9.Ratchet & Clank 8.The Witness 7.Titanfall 2 6.Furi 5.Dishonored 2 4.DOOM 3.Final Fantasy XV 2.Uncharted 4 1.Dark Souls 3 Witcher 3: Blood and Wine would definitely also make the list if I included DLC.
Firewatch deserved so much more praise than it got. I have never felt as tense playing a video game as I was playing Firewatch. Even if the story isn't the complete package, the pacing is fucking incredible.
Congrats Hitman! not expecting that my personal top 10 were: 1. Uncharted 4 2. Hitman 3. Overwatch4. Dark Souls 3 5. Ratchet and Clank6. Titanfall 27. Forza Horizon 3 8. INSIDE9.DOOM10. Dishonored 2
Kie Sears - Great list! I didn't play Hitman, Overwatch, or Forza but I'm totally with you on those other 7 games. Those are all on my top 10 and I also have Final Fantasy XV, Furi, and The Witness.
I will say that Mercy is my most played character and the vast majority of friends and people I know who have gotten into Overwatch have done so thru that character
man people always make fun of adam jensens voice but they never seem to know that it's that voice actor's real normal voice, he just sounds like that. so it's not like they're trying to make him sound cool or some shit
Drew's summary of # 1 is what makes him MVP imo. I think I would be the monster that would take 6 out for Picross 2, but other than maybe switching 9 for 10 and 3 for 4, I think it's a fantastic list they made
Is it just me, or was Brad using a consistent strategy here: If you disagree with my stance, then my determination is that your argument is invalid as an argument against the game I like? Absolutely not trying to be snarky, but it just seemed to be how he handled the debates throughout.
Playing Uncharted on normal is really easy. I do agree that in the case of Uncharted 4 there's usually so much mobility options at your disposal in the combat encounters that I could see the appeal of playing on normal or easy. Playing on hard you definitely need to take full advantage of the stealth mechanics in the game and pick enemies one by one, which is really fun in its own way. Those last few firefights fall flat because you're forced into a full on firefight with no chance of playing it stealthily.
I definitely think Hearts of Stone got removed a little too quick in Best Story. Would even push for it to take Firewatch's place in top three or even take first place, but that's just me.
Yeah roadhog!!! And mei.... man, so many actually good characters. Haha trying to decide on the best, in a host of amazing characters. This was the gongshow i was hoping for
Really dislike the extended notion of Zero Time Dilemma making it over Firewatch because "Firewatch didn't land" for everybody when one person played ZTD, he says he wasn't sure if the ending was good or bad, and nobody knows if it landed for anybody else because nobody played it However, Vinny's story of ZTD's story for Story of the Year, Dan's right
A world where Dark Souls III is a mediocre game that brings nothing new to the series, and easily the weakest entry in the franchise. Simply having the name Dark Souls and saying "hey we did one of these again" does not earn you a spot in GOTY.
ApertureLabs - Man... I thought DS3 was waaaaay better than 2. I thought 2 had good DLC but the main game was extremely weak. I liked Bloodborne more than DS3 but I think DS3 is a great game. 200+ hours in DS3. My most played game of the year by far and my personal GOTY.
Darkholow didn't read this whole thread but DS2 is my favorite. Also DS3 and DOOM are tied for my second place goty, and I agree that it's a crime they weren't into it.
Alex one of the hardest people to watch and listen to I've ever seen. I think they just give him his way to shut him up. Man that guy gives a whole new meaning to grating.
Give Alex his way!? Most of the time the stuff he cares about always gets cut. Thumper perhaps shouldn't be above Stardew based simply that Dan cared a whole lot more about it in comparison (the game not the position) but Thumper did have more support across the room.
I just got Stardew Valley for ps4. It's my favorite game to play but I'm not sure about it being GOTY. It's really fresh for me so I think that is a big factor to why I'm unsure if its GOTY. Once I get into it more then I'll be able to know if its GOTY. Overwatch is a lot of fun but that game requires to have a team who works together. If you're not partied up then it can be frustrating.
It's kind of annoying how Brad seems to jump down Dan's throat for pretty much anything, but someone like Jeff has carte blanche to say any and everything no matter how inane it is.
Not at all. Jeff got under brads skin too. Brad needed to understand that this is what the entire premise of these deliberations are. Watch 3:31:22 and look at jeff mumble under his breathe
Giant Bomb : Hitman Playstation Experience : OverWatch GoldenJoystick Awards : Dark Souls 3 Which game is the real GOTY ? i really can't understand how this GOTY thing works , so now i can say that Hitman is officially a GOTY for 2016 ?
+Bill I Did Not Bang That Woman Clinton Mmmmmmm... Those two guys above think that i'm angry LOL ! Im fucking happy so much because Hitman won an award Therefor i'm asking . Like u mean that we can't say that a single game is the goty for 2016 ? Multiple games are goty ? I mean this is how it works ?
NGinCortex well tons of websites and publications give out GOTY, and gotypicks.blogspot.com compiles them all to find which won the most gotypicks.blogspot.com
Does Jeff hate Jason? Because for years every time Jason liked something and wanted to say something positive, Jeff interrupts him and tells him why he’s wrong about that and what a piece of crap that game is. It’s really almost every time Jason opens his mouth, it’s soooo annoying especially because Jason is mostly quiet, and Jeff is passionate when he hates something and he hates a lot of stuff.
Nah I don't think so, they've done plenty of features together and have a great rapport. Sometimes game of the year talks just make it seem really tense between folks Imo.
Zero time is so much better than firewatch its not even close. One of the best and best story series to one that was filled with lies and the worst ending I have seen in years. Good job guilting them into that one. Also Alex didnt even choose Firewatch in the GOTY category. Tsk Tsk
Seriously why is Doom even being considered for best story. I love Doom, easily one of the best games of the year, possibly the best. But its story is not fleshed out in any way shape or form, it's standard sci fi stuff with a small amount of ridiculous codec stuff sprinkled in with good not great characters. Doom slayer fits perfectly in a Doom game, but has no place in a best story discussion.
I would like to know which version of Homefront they played. They passed it off the worst games list so quickly. The game was completely broken on launch. Like game breaking bugs broken, broken AI, broken guns, broken everything. The story was so cringe. The game play that did work was more bland than Mad Max. And to top it off it was a AAA game. Objectively it was one of if not the worst games of 2016.
Also, if DOOM is better than Half Life 2, Bioshock, every Call of Duty, every Halo, etc, then you have to say it's the best FPS campaign ever. The shooter campaigns in the 90s were good because they were original but none of those games would be good by today's standards.
Nick Montoya - I played all of those games. There are 2 ways to look at it. 1. How good was the game when it released and what was the historic significance or 2.How good is the game in 2016 compared to every other game ever made. If we're talking about 1, Half Life, Quake, and DOOM 2 would all be talked about as the greatest shooters. I think you also have to put Half Life 2, Modern Warfare 4, and Bioshock on that list for how amazing they were when released. If we're talking about discussion1, I don't think the 2016 DOOM is above any of those games. On the other hand, if it's discussion 2, someone has never played a shooter, and every game ever made was presented to them on the same day... than yea 2016 DOOM is probably better than Half Life 2 and Bioshock.
Nick Montoya - if we're judging games on "how much did I enjoy this game when it was released" a lot of those 90s games would be on my best shooter list with Half Life 2 and Bioshock. 2016 DOOM was amazing and it is certainly mechanically and graphically better than all of those other games but I loved Half Life 2 and Bioshock more on my original playthroughs.
I'm curious how long ago you've replayed Half Life 2. I play that thing every single year in the week before Christmas and still haven't got tired of it, it still feels just as great as it did on release. It's still my favorite FPS of all time, closely followed by, funnily enough, The Ultimate Doom. I've still to play a modern shooter that feels better to play than Half Life 2 (though I haven't played Doom 2016 yet, admittedly).
Overwatch Character of the Year is a stupid category. It really depends on the style you like to play. If you like support characters, your favorite will be extremely different from someone who's a carry main. A better category might've been best Overwatch map. For ex. my favorite LoL character is Nami but that's because I love playing support and her kit is great for engage, disengage, and buffs. But countless other people even supports would pick a different champion. It just doesn't make sense for a category.
To be fair, the Giant Bomb annual GOTYs have had silly categories devoted to a single game before. I remember Chop-Chop winning "Skylander of the Year," and Episode 3 winning "Best 'The Walking Dead' Episode." Oh, and the "Best Miiverse" category created just so they could talk about the weirdness that is "Funky Barn"s community.
Channing King - I get it. But as someone who's followed the moba pro scene since 2013, it's a category that just makes no sense. I skipped the entire section just because it's not worth listening to people argue over determining the "best" hero when in a well-balanced hero game, all champions have their merits and their pitfalls.
And yet here they are, still determining which characters they like the best. Not everyone follows the same rigid line of thinking you do, and not everyone takes the awards as seriously as you do.
The Doom MP bringing down the package feels irrelevant to me for one simple reason. If you just cut it out completely, the game would still feel complete because the campaign is so meaty. And then Jeffs whole argument would be meaningless and he could say its #1? Extra content shouldn't bring down the package. Unlike say a COD game where if you cut out MP there would be no reason to play, given the solo game is like 4 hours.
DoomsDayDan - Depends on how casual of a moba gamer you are. It's a great intro to moves/ultimates and using those moves in a team setting to achieve a goal. But I don't think Overwatch has enough layers of strategy compared to other moba/hero games. My husband prefers playing Paladins over Overwatch just because you unlock cards for heroes that determine how the hero plays - i.e. Life steal spec vs crit spec, etc. Also in Overwatch, there's no pick/ban phase for champions so there's lots of cheese team comps. Also, I think the loot box system is such a scam but people are often willing to overlook it because you get them free when you level.
Alex James - I completely agree. Uncharted 4 was a cinematic gaming masterpiece. You have to be pretty jaded to not enjoy that game. Having a top 10 of 2016 without Uncharted 4 is insane to me.
Overwatch Character of the Year: 1:41
Best Story: 28:50
Worst Game: 1:37:59
Best Game: 1:56:25
saint
You're amazing. Thank you
Kurapika92 thank you, so much!
Awesome! Thanks for the time-saver.
This is exactly what I came here for. I need to skip story for spoiler reasons. Thanks.
Man...what a crew this was. God squad.
100%
Wish it would have never ended. Also hate how brad, vinny, and Alex blindsided jeff. I wish they left together for something
The only possible choice for Best Game as far as I'm concerned. This might have been the best year of GotY content yet. Thanks a bunch GB!
"Pharah is kinda boring.....Boring? SHE'S A SPACE EGYPTIAN!!!!!!" hahahahaha Drew was dumbfounded!!
I went back to watch that part a couple of times. Really funny.
16:20, for those who want to hear it.
Jeff being the one to propose putting Hitman over DOOM is MY best surprise of the year.
By the sound, it was basically entirely because of the multiplayer.
MASS EFFECT 2 ROBBED AGAIN
Top 11 seems pretty great.
A really good point was made, next year they should have at least one or two categories devoted to mechanics, also level design
Alex's shafting of Zero Time Dilemma for his contradictory feelings on Firewatch was really dumb.
I felt that discussion dragged a bit and should have ended when Vinny said that the story in the game didn't make sense unless you played the two other games. Meaning the story by itself isn't that great.
That makes no sense. So no sequel can never win anything? Of course it continues on from the other games its a trilogy.
I love Brad's face palm in the thumbnail.
If (like me) you don't care at all about Overwatch, skip to 28:50
Gangway Detroit Thanks man
Gangway Detroit You, Sir, are a scholar and a gentleman.
I don't even hate overwatch, but I just wanted to say THANK YOU my good sir.
Thank you sir. There is no reason a "best character" for a single game should ever be apart of something like this.
Thanks
Hahah Drew is just the best. His subtle quips are always exactly on point, and he just cracks me up.
Agreed thats all I wanted the whole time. He just wanted it at 10
Though, Brad did admit that on this video.
3:31:22 this right here is the moment Brad told Vinny and Alex they are definitely leaving to form Nextlander. Lol, still hurt how they did Jeff.
LOVE this game of the year thing they do every year.
I'm really happy someone stuck their neck out for Hyper Light Drifter.
Dan saying he never felt bored made me realize how much I enjoy that game. Despite there being a ton of monotony in that game, I never found myself bored. Somehow, the game was able to keep me interested in doing the same thing over and over.
Wasn't the Uncharted 4 twist they discussed implied in 3? I'm pretty sure they say in some way or another that you're a fake, in that specific way.
I remember Marlowe implying in U3 that "Drake" wasn't Nathan's real surname, but it didn't go farther than that.
My personal top 10:
10.INSIDE
9.Ratchet & Clank
8.The Witness
7.Titanfall 2
6.Furi
5.Dishonored 2
4.DOOM
3.Final Fantasy XV
2.Uncharted 4
1.Dark Souls 3
Witcher 3: Blood and Wine would definitely also make the list if I included DLC.
No Hitman??
Tiago Goulart - I didn't play Hitman or Overwatch. I'll definitely check out Hitman next year.
Rob Smith you do that! Great list BTW. Uncharted 4 and Dishonored 2 are 10/10 for me!
5 games in my top 6 that weren't on their list. lol
How Furi didnt get more recognition is beyond me
Firewatch deserved so much more praise than it got. I have never felt as tense playing a video game as I was playing Firewatch. Even if the story isn't the complete package, the pacing is fucking incredible.
Astonished by the winner. Never thought they would go that way
Congrats Hitman! not expecting that
my personal top 10 were:
1. Uncharted 4
2. Hitman
3. Overwatch4. Dark Souls 3
5. Ratchet and Clank6. Titanfall 27. Forza Horizon 3
16:21 "She's the space Egyptian" -Drew 2016
Overwatch characters of the year:
Personality: Reinhardt or Junkrat
Design: Zenyatta (Robot monk is the coolest concept ever)
Gameplay: Ana
These guys really like shooters. I mean they 'kinda' like other games, but collectively they REALLY like shooters
2016 was a great year for shooters though.
It was a great year for shooters. Though, it should be said that Jeff is the only one in the group that cares about multiplayer shooters.
I will say that Mercy is my most played character and the vast majority of friends and people I know who have gotten into Overwatch have done so thru that character
I feel like Cuphead should've been higher.
We know...
Cuphead is a full package
I can`t believe it. We were the best game of 2016!
Loved seeing Alex get some other opinions on his top 10 this year.
man people always make fun of adam jensens voice but they never seem to know that it's that voice actor's real normal voice, he just sounds like that. so it's not like they're trying to make him sound cool or some shit
Completely disagree with how connections were difficult to make in Firewatch.
Alex fighting for Doom over Hitman and then he ranked Hitman 2 positions above Doom on his list.
Honestly, It's a great list, but I thought the discussion was so pleasing to listen to that I didn't really care what the final list was.
Well at least this year we didn't have an invisible Inc situation
Drew's summary of # 1 is what makes him MVP imo. I think I would be the monster that would take 6 out for Picross 2, but other than maybe switching 9 for 10 and 3 for 4, I think it's a fantastic list they made
Hearts of Stone came out last year
Mei should have won. Her kit is downright overpowered.
"I'M GOOD" -Vinny
Lol that made me laugh for some reason
I can not wait for Alex and Vinny to tear through fking Dan, come 2017.
I'm really glad Dan argued so hard for stardew valley.
Thanks Dan for the AM2R shoutout!
lmao Jeff's face at 54:30
A-Mei-zing!
Is it just me, or was Brad using a consistent strategy here: If you disagree with my stance, then my determination is that your argument is invalid as an argument against the game I like? Absolutely not trying to be snarky, but it just seemed to be how he handled the debates throughout.
So now we can consider Hitman as a GOTY ? Or we only take the official results from PSX event ? I really don't understand how the GOTY thing works .
that was so uncomfortable how vinny let firewatch into the top 3 story category just because he couldn't bare to watch alex pout.
YES JASON THANK YOU ZARYA THE BEST
Playing Uncharted on normal is really easy. I do agree that in the case of Uncharted 4 there's usually so much mobility options at your disposal in the combat encounters that I could see the appeal of playing on normal or easy. jeff's stardew opinions still completely baffling
I definitely think Hearts of Stone got removed a little too quick in Best Story. Would even push for it to take Firewatch's place in top three or even take first place, but that's just me.
It didn't come out in 2016, but it's the best story on that list and it's not even close for me.
Mei is love. Mei is life. So is Zarya. Only Jason and Jeff are sane people :D
But hey Rein, Pharah and Lucio are also in my Top 5.
Overwatch over The Witness... :(
I wish they played Icey. I suspect the GB crew would have loved it.
Yeah roadhog!!! And mei.... man, so many actually good characters. Haha trying to decide on the best, in a host of amazing characters. This was the gongshow i was hoping for
Meh, game was mediocre
Really dislike the extended notion of Zero Time Dilemma making it over Firewatch because "Firewatch didn't land" for everybody when one person played ZTD, he says he wasn't sure if the ending was good or bad, and nobody knows if it landed for anybody else because nobody played it
However, Vinny's story of ZTD's story for Story of the Year, Dan's right
Pro tip: The chain dash is easier at 30fps than 60 IMO for Hyper Light Drifter
Dark Souls 3 not even in a top 10 list? What kind of bizarro world have I been stuck in? :|
DS as a series has never REALLY been a major thing for GB. If you want love for that series it is the last site I would go to.
A world where Dark Souls III is a mediocre game that brings nothing new to the series, and easily the weakest entry in the franchise. Simply having the name Dark Souls and saying "hey we did one of these again" does not earn you a spot in GOTY.
Did you even play DS2? Cause THAT is the worst one.
ApertureLabs - Man... I thought DS3 was waaaaay better than 2. I thought 2 had good DLC but the main game was extremely weak. I liked Bloodborne more than DS3 but I think DS3 is a great game. 200+ hours in DS3. My most played game of the year by far and my personal GOTY.

thank you for the entertaining discussions =D
I am at 2hrs:09min - I am hoping Darkest Dungeon makes it! I have really enjoyed it. EDIT - alex threw in the towel for DD at 2hrs:12min ... damn.
2:03:37. Holy crap, after 14 hours they finally mentioned the best game of the year. lol
Hitman is number 1...my soul is at peace. Thanks for these guys. A lot of fun and entertainment over the xmas break
More like StarDon't... Am I right?
Give me Season 2!
wtf they took off genji and hanzo right away. they're fun af to play as.
I like Tracer...
Hearts of stone dlc came out in 2015! Blood and wine is the only Witcher dlc that came out in 2016!
I liked HLD, but man did some of those dashing challenges make me actually angry. I should try it now that it's 60 fps.
AF ARaider yes it's good, but it can be a little infuriating at times (at least it was for me).
Careful! Lot's of spoilers on the best story deliberation. :)
Seems like the Alex Navarro game of the year awards
I'm upvoting this comment then downvoting it just so it gets some recognition, I just wanted to give it its due, I've said my piece now.
I haven't read this comment but I am deleting it from the best comment list because the comment I like is probably better.
If you're not partied up then it can be frustrating.
hearts of stone was 2015. the 2016 dlc is blood and wine
Shhhhh. If you don't remind them, it can win a good thing. That DLC deserves respect.
Carl Jones I agree. blood and wine was my goty 2016, and hearts of stone was even better.
Uncharted 4
CATCH PHRASE!!!
Mafia 3’s gameplay wasn’t great but the story was phenomenal
It's kind of annoying how Brad seems to jump down Dan's throat for pretty much anything, but someone like Jeff has carte blanche to say any and everything no matter how inane it is.
Not at all. Jeff got under brads skin too. Brad needed to understand that this is what the entire premise of these deliberations are. Watch 3:31:22 and look at jeff mumble under his breathe
Mighty no 9 is not the second worst game of the year.
Giant Bomb : Hitman
Playstation Experience : OverWatch
GoldenJoystick Awards : Dark Souls 3
Which game is the real GOTY ? i really can't understand how this GOTY thing works , so now i can say that Hitman is officially a GOTY for 2016 ?
NGinCortex I'm not sure what the problem is. Giantbomb's GOTY is Hitman.
He's not being serious.
NGinCortex there are tons of GOTY awards each year
+Bill I Did Not Bang That Woman Clinton
Mmmmmmm...
Those two guys above think that i'm angry LOL !
Im fucking happy so much because Hitman won an award
Therefor i'm asking .
No.
Tsk Tsk
lol I spoil games like 3/4 of the time and they never do anything
Objectively it was one of if not the worst games of 2016.
they really had DOOM over Firewatch for Best Story lmao
The real issue is that DOOM is even anywhere near the top 10 in story. Don't get me wrong, it's a great game but story is not why I enjoyed that game.
52:54 Zero Time Dilemma talk
DOOM wins or gets runner up on just about all of their positive categories...still doesn't win GOTY SMH
Banner Saga 2 for best story!
Mighty No 9 isn't good... but Umbrella Corps and Ghostbusters are waaay worse.
mass effect 2!!!
3:37:01 - Whoa... did these guys actually say DOOM is better than Half Life 2!? 😳 Now they've crossed a line. Hahaha...
I've still to play a modern shooter that feels better to play than Half Life 2 (though I haven't played Doom 2016 yet, admittedly).
masterplusmargarita - I replayed Half Life 2 around 3 years ago and was surprised by how good it still held up.
My dude is clearly new to Giantbomb.
zen is the worst support
Ana was robbed.
Is Overwatch really so goddamn good it deserves its own personal circlejerk in these awards?
@@umiluv It’s not a moba what
Jason looks so different four years ago wow, now days he kinda looks tired all the time... and older.
Tracer hate? screw this award :(
Lmao I'm gonna buy Picross
Because of this
The hate for Uncharted 4 is insane!
Alex James pretty ridiculous if you ask me. I respect the opinions but at the same time I am just rolling my eyes.
Alex James - I completely agree. Uncharted 4 was a cinematic gaming masterpiece. You have to be pretty jaded to not enjoy that game. Having a top 10 of 2016 without Uncharted 4 is insane to me.
@@DOGroove overrated
@@DOGroove The story is good but the game is paced significantly worse than, say, Uncharted 2.
