Saw him last week with Wilco and he's the greatest guitarist I've ever seen. I've never seen a guitarist who can be so melodic, so messy, so virtuosic, so simple, so complicated and so unique - all in one song.
I not only got to see them in Meridian, Ms, I went to the after party and met everyone but Tweedy. Me and my buddy hung out and talked with Nels for over an hour. He is as nice a gentleman you will find on the planet. He let us hold the little metal thing he uses in shot in the arm solo. Said he buys it at hardware store. I will never forget how gracious he was and how polite the entire band was. They literally treat u like family.Pat introduced me to his family and they started hugging me. Lol! They thought I was his best friend but I had just met him. 😂 I had a buddy that knew him so that’s how that all happened. It was a blast!
Nels Cline is like the missing link between an older generation of music fans inspired by Hendrix, Fripp, Miles and up to bands like Television to a new, growing group of younger musicians who use pedals and soundscapes much more than what we'd say a "traditional" guitarist would
I was fortunate to have had a conversation with Nels in a bar in San Diego years ago. I had no idea who he was. At the time he was playing in an improv band with the drummer from Jane's Addiction. There were only a handful of people at the show. I was blown away by the noises that he made. After his set, he was at the bar and asked him what he was using. He spend a good 20 minutes chatting with me about guitars. I found out later he was the guitarist for Wilco after the fact. He was a really approachable guy who clearly enjoyed what he did.
1. This is awesome 2. Watt is one of the nicest people ever (was delightful on our show) so you know Nels' board had to be really annoying haha 3. I own a Fuzz Factory and a Tumnus and had no idea Nels played them 4. Good man for quoting two of my guitar heroes in Fripp and Howe. Thanks Reverb
@@douggoransson5179 A friend of a friend got me backstage privileges to a festival Nels and Julian Lage were playing as a duo, and after I tracked them down, Julian was kind enough to use my phone to take a pic of me and Nels lol... and I didn't have the class to ask for a picture with Mr. Lage either (great player though)
@@benjaminhartley6578 Awesome!! Well it could happen as Trevor Dunn plays with Julian Lage--who also plays with the Nels Cline 4. For a second I thought that was a younger Bill Frissel on Jaguar.
I'm not a rich guy, I don't play blues, but I also don't get why it's cool to hate on people who are/do. Play whatever you like. I'm just pleased people are playing.
don't know if I agree. the blues and what Nels does is just expression with the guitar. making it speak. very different, but antithesis? the world needs both.
His "apocalyptic" sound here sounds like a track from the Guitarrorists compilation. Namely Dave Rick's 'Where's Gitchi Oombigat At?'. If any of you like Nils Cline and this type of experimentation and haven't picked up Guitarrorists yet then do so. It's a who's-who of alt/underground/groundbreaking players from the 70s and 80s released in 1991. It changed my perception on how to approach guitar and I had already been listening to Sonic Youth since '85 when I found Confusion Is Sex and thought I was ahead of the time. I was wrong. I have always wished follow up releases would happen every decade but sadly that never happened.
It looks like a metal flashlight - he's using the textured surface of the handle in the same way he often uses a large spring, whisk, bottleneck slide, etc.
~8:20 ish .. This is what it sounds like when I play, I didn't know it was considered great music. (Of course, Its when I'm trying to play "Black Dog" from Zeppelin). 😒 👍
Here’s the thing about Nels and Wilco: watch Jeff Tweedy watching Nels: Tweedy’s immensely satisfied, “Holy crap, Nels Cline is in my band, right there next to me!” expression at various moments during any set tells you the whole story of why it works.
it's true! I saw them play the Greek Theater in Berkeley last October and noticed this a couple times, especially during Nels' awesome solo on "Impossible Germany"
Reminds me of the time I tried to tune my guitar in garageband with one of the Experimental amp sound selected...I sent the recording to Jeff Tweedy but haven't heard back yet
Some of what you hear when Nels is spanking his Jazzmaster is not a pedal sound. The Jazz unique combo of string length and its vibrato create that that piano like hollow voice which you either love or hate..
He's doing a Masterclass! Heres the link to get a spot www.universe.com/events/masterclass-with-nels-cline-of-wilco-2nd-class-added-tickets-los-angeles-PYTHV6
😂😂😂😂 I can totally hear Watt kicking off when the board died 😂😂 barking haha I set up a couple of gigs for Watt when he had two pedals I was shocked and looked at him like dude ? Watts this shit? Haha I have a monster board to and he’s give me shit for it , love him endlessly Big Love Brother Watt. Nels without a doubt my favourite guitar player by the way 😂
And we're all very impressed. I drive a Nissan Altima. Not an amazing car by any means, but it serves its purpose and it's all I really need. But I don't go around to Ferrari owners saying "You know, all you really need is a simple car like a Nissan Altima. You only have a Ferrari because you're overcompensating for your lack of driving skills."

Nels is the cool adult every kid dreams of becoming.
Perfect take
Excruciating apocalyptic noises that make me happy is now officially a genre
Or a band name!
Seeing Nels live with Wilco is such a gift for anyone!

Sonic Youth was doing stuff like this 30 years ago.
Skip Tracer yeah but the world wasnt ready for it yet
Reminds me of Radiohead’s Ed O’Brien.
@@skiptracer2988 yeah he was on stage with them doing it 30 years ago. Lol there’s a pic. He was a big sonic youth fan.

Once we are post covid, please go on That Pedal Show pretty please Nels!
Or even better, Pedals and Effects once Juan is back to full health!
Why Not Both?

Degradation is my sound- Nels Cline
I could listen to Nels Cline all day. Either playing or talking about playing. Any one - or both- is good.
Dude is so insanely talented.
A sonic sculptor master who can also shred jazz licks.
His playing is both inspiring and humbling to the point of quitting the guitar.
i agree. Nels Cline and Vernon Reid are STILL the future of guitar
Nels Cline is kind of a younger, more musical David Lynch
"I don't know what happened, now I have a million pedals." Story of my life.
met him once. nicest guy on earth.
My greatest guitar moment: Julian Lage introduced me to Nels at a Sold Sound Festival. How cool is that?

I met him and picked his brain about some music theory stuff. Very affable and encouraging.
I wish I was nice
Amazing stuff, a true innovative, inspiring artist, who I have looked up to for a long time. A sonic pioneer...
I see Nels, I click like!
Nels is old-school cool. What a guitar player.
Anybody know what the purple and yellow pedal he steps on at 8:20 is?
Nevermind, it is the EQD Pitchbay!
I love the way he speaks
I put him on my most recent Underrated Guitar Players video! He’s awesome
That sliver Jazzmaster is incredibly cool
Ladies and gentlemen the worlds finest guitarist, Nels Cline! 8:22
"Nels Cline Shreds"
Nels joins Sonic Youth.
XD.

How have Mike Patton And Nels Cline not done a project together--or have they?
No, but Mark Ribot that is great

Remember when people used to hide their pedalboards and settings to "protect" "their" sound? Cline is the antidote and more.

who is Mike Watt to question a sonic God? Nels is THE man to go to when it's time for a unique lead.
Mike Watt? The archetypal modern rock bass player? Yeah, what did he ever do? 👀
