- From RRP: "The goslings at N1 jumped this morning between 8:02 and 8:04 AM CDT. Five of the six made it, but one did not. MG and PG have herded their five surviving offspring downstream to deeper, more sheltered water. Perhaps we'll see them from the N2B cam, where goslings should start hatch on or around April 20. It took just a few hours for another goose to come in and lay an egg at N1, so don't be surprised if you see more geese, eggs, and goslings in this nest. The goslings at N2B should hatch on or around April 20."
Today was the day for the Decorah goslings to take that leap of faith and jump off the nest to the ground! Dad was on the ground calling and Mom is on the edge of the nest as she is getting ready to join him. She flies down and the goslings are watching Mom and one by one they crawl to the edge of the nest and jump! Five goslings went one right after one another, a sixth one hesitated and did not jump with them. This gosling goes from back & forth from different sides of the nest deciding which way to jump. The sixth gosling finally jumps off the nest to the left.
The cam pans and finds four goslings on the ground with Mom & Dad and soon a fifth one comes into view. The parents wait for the other gosling but it does not join them so they all start their trek towards the water. The goslings begin feeding on the vegetation almost immediately as they follow Mom and Dad and swim off out and out of view. The last gosling to make the jump did not make it.
I am saddened by the loss of the gosling that did not make it but am rejoicing to see that other five goslings have survived and are now beginning their lives with Mom & Dad. It is equally amazing that shortly after the goslings jumped that a new goose claimed the nest and the female already laid an egg in it! Wow they do not miss a beat! Thank you all for watching!

That sweet gosling that didn't make it is up in heaven with Meadow, and the other hatchlings / eaglets from this season, so far.. Bittersweet tears fall like rain again.. Super happy for the goslings that made it to mom & dad..I love these creatures ..TY Lady Hawk, as always, I love your love for God's creatures, your wisdom & knowledge💖💖

Why didn't mom or dad help the last one, you could see it didn't know where to jump from. So sad, that thud sound. 😪
I wonder if the same Gosling that jumped first like an 82nd Airborne soldier is the same one that went into the water first...If so that's a natural born leader of Geese! That kid is gonna end up flying point in the /\ pattern! Lol
Eagles build their nests to keep their chicks IN. These newly-hatched goslings have to climb over those sticks and jump. I suspect the gosling that did not make it was the one hatched yesterday. Poor little one running back and forth trying to find the easiest way out 💔

This is why I hate the "leap of faith." Every year I've watched, at least 1 of them doesn't make it. 💔😰

Such a tragic moment for one little baby gostling. Mom has many for purpose. Sad but nature is cruel. They are so cute. RIP LITTLE ONE. ❤
The base of the tree needs some padding. Perhaps a load of leafs for a softer landing in the future.

The leap of faith is just heart pounding footage the choice these little brave goslings have to make to continue life is nature in its rawest form unfortunatly 1 brave soul didn't make it but it died braver than most Rest easy little one

Every year since Mother Goose has laid her eggs in N2B, one of the goslings has died in the jump. I hope next year she chooses a lower platform!😢
And now we have a new female goose that has laid an egg here at N1. I hope that we will see all the goslings jump successfully in the future♥

It's a shame they have to have their nest so high up? Perhaps the 6th chick was the last out of it's shell.

Hi hartless the last gosling that went to the left side of the nest and jumped did not survive 😥 You can see all five goslings with Mom and Dad beginning at 09:39 timestamp on!! The fifth was on the ground but not in view right away ♥
It's always the one that goes off the other side from their siblings that doesn't make it😔😢

So do we have any way to know if the one that didn’t make it was also the last one to hatch? It was heartbreaking to see it panic and get left behind. That probably would have been me looking over the edge and thinking I don’t think so. R.I.P. little one and good luck to the other five. Really amazing to witness that leap knowing how high that nest is!!
Hi we don't know for sure Barnowlwatcher and RRP has not given an opionion. I do not believe it was the youngest. I think the youngest might have been the first to jump. It really is a scary moment for these tiny newly hatched chicks!!

They just hatched. Is this normal for them to jump so soon? Very sad that one didn't make it safely.
Hello tochashona yes this is how it is done! The parents do not feed the goslings, they have to get to water and the ground to start to forage on vegetation. The goslings will always jump anywhere from 24-48 hours after hatching if they are hatched in a nest above the ground like this. Some geese will have nests on the ground hidden in bushes as well. Where I live, the Canadian geese all lay their eggs on the ground so I don't get to see this amazing jumping taking place! ♥

All five can be seen on the ground and are with Mom and Dad! The fifth one was not in view right away - watch at 09:38 on to see all five! The last gosling to jump sadly did not survive.
This is nature 😊 but by bringing these birds they took away the space from the eagles, very sad about this and in that way they did not prioritize continuity of years 🤔 😞❤🦅🦅❤

Lesson learnt: goslings need to imitate Mom and follow her on the same path. Otherwise they may end up jumping on hard surfaces and not survive.
