The idea that Vishnu is the preserver of the universe is there in the Rig Veda. Rig Veda 1.22.16 Vishnu has specially travelled the whole world. He had planted His foot three times. The whole world is included in the dust of Vishnu’s footsteps. Rig Veda 1.22.17 Vishnu had trodden the earth three steps [1], He is the protector of all without being hurt by anyone and hence the protector of all dharmas. This is a clear reference to the Vamana Avatar of Narayana. It shows the existence of a trinity and Vishnu being the supreme preserver of the cosmos. It describes the Vamana avatar of Vishnu who covered the world 3 times in 3 steps. A similar claim is found in this verse where Vishnu is said to have upheld the heaven and the earth which supports the references to the Vamana avatar. Rig Veda 7.99.2 ( This verse plays an important role down below too) न ते॑ विष्णो॒ जाय॑मानो॒ न जा॒तो देव॑ महि॒म्नः पर॒मन्त॑माप । उद॑स्तभ्ना॒ नाक॑मृ॒ष्वं बृ॒हन्तं॑ दा॒धर्थ॒ प्राचीं॑ क॒कुभं॑ पृथि॒व्याः ॥ न ते विष्णो जायमानो न जातो देव महिम्नः परमन्तमाप । उदस्तभ्ना नाकमृष्वं बृहन्तं दाधर्थ प्राचीं ककुभं पृथिव्याः ॥ “No being that is or that has been born, divine Visnu, has attained the utmost limit of your magnitude by which you have upheld the vast and beautiful heaven, and sustained the eastern horizon of the earth.” -Rigveda 1.156.2 यः पू॒र्व्याय॑ वे॒धसे॒ नवी॑यसे सु॒मज्जा॑नये॒ विष्ण॑वे॒ ददा॑शति । यो जा॒तम॑स्य मह॒तो महि॒ ब्रव॒त्सेदु॒ श्रवो॑भि॒र्युज्यं॑ चिद॒भ्य॑सत् ॥ Vishnu is the most ancient of all, yet also the most recent. Nothing and no one creates Vishnu, yet Vishnu creates everyone and everything. Against the above translation, Sayanacharya’s explanation presents a slightly different and more convincing view about the supremacy of Vishnu. Some words are explained by him: ‘पूर्व्याय’ पूर्वकालीनाय नित्यायेत्यर्थः - pūrvāya means ancient and must be understood as nitya (eternal). 2. ‘वेधसे’ विविधजगत्कर्त्रे - Vedhas means the creator of many jagats (worlds). 3. ‘नवीयसे’ नित्यनूतनाय अत्यन्तरमणीयायेत्यर्थः - navīyas means one forever knew, to be understood as extremely pleasing to look at. 4.‘जातं’ जन्म उत्पत्तिं हिरण्यगर्भादिरूपं जन्म - jata means birth in the from of Hiranyagarbha. In fact, for the very next verse (1.156.3) Sayanacharya explains : विष्णोरेव स्वर्गापवर्गसाधनाय इष्ट्याद्यात्मना द्रव्यदेवतात्मना वा परिणामम् Only Vishnu is the facilitator of svarga and moksha, he is the atman of the Yajna and the devata of the Dakshina or (and) the result as well. Moreover Lord Krishna is mentioned in the Chandogya Upanishad. Ghora Angirasa expounded this well known doctrine to Devaki's son Krishna and said , 'Such a knower should at the time of death repeat this triad - "Thou art the imperishable, Thou art the unchangeable, Thou art the subtle essence of Prana." [Katha Upanishad, Adhyaaya] talks about the highest abode of Lord Vishnu विज्ञानसारथिर्यस्तु मनःप्रग्रहवान्नरः । सोऽध्वनः पारमाप्नोति तद्विष्णोः परमं पदम् ॥ ९ ॥ “But the man who has a discriminating intellect for the driver and a controlling mind for the reins, reaches the end of the road, i.e., that highest place of Vishnu..” This claim is similar to this verse of the Rig Veda Rig Veda 1.22.21 तद्विप्रा॑सो विप॒न्यवो॑ जागृ॒वांस॒: समि॑न्धते । विष्णो॒र्यत्प॑र॒मं प॒दम् ॥ तद्विप्रासो विपन्यवो जागृवांसः समिन्धते । विष्णोर्यत्परमं पदम् ॥ “The wise, ever vigilant and diligent in praise, amply glorify that which is the supreme station of Visnu.” Rig Veda, 1.22.20 calls the supreme abode as the feet of Shri Vishnu. oṃ tad viṣṇoḥ paramam padam sadā paśyanti sūrayaḥ "All the suras (i.e., the devas) look always toward the feet of Lord Vishnu as the supreme abode." Taittiriya Samhita 5.5.1 has a similar claim देवताणं विष्णु परमः || Meaning: Vishnu is the supreme amongst devatas. [Aitareya Brahmana 1.1.1 also has a similar claim अग्निर्वै देवानामवमो विष्णुं परमं तदन्तरं सर्व देवताः || Meaning: “Agni is the lowest and Vishnu is the highest among devas. All other gods occupy positions that are in between.” This verse I posted before to show Vishnu holding the earth and heaven as Vamana Avatar. This further emphasizes Vishnu as the supreme Preserver and controller of the cosmos. Yeh baat tau swayam shiv puran mei bhi likhaa hai ki Shiv or Vishnu dono mei koyi antar nhii hai.
