Testing TDP specified by AMD

This STAPM is probably based on Mobile Extended Frequency Range (mXFR)

The default TDP configured for this laptop is 25W, with 25W slow (no difference with TDP) and 30W fast TDP burst.
Some laptop has 15W and 25W as far as I know, mostly 15W and never seen 12W yet or any other configuration.
Most laptop also has this kind of TDP burst config at the same level (25W slow and 30W fast), for short duration, these 15W laptops may have the same performance as 25W. Duration depends on the laptop (probably depend on how good is laptop cooling).
Fast = fast TDP burst, slow = more TDP burst time but with less TDP.
If "STAPM Power" reach the same value as "STAPM Limit", any PPT Limit or TDP burst will be immediately disabled. This Power increased over time, depending on how much heat in watt cooling system can handle. This will make 15W no longer have a performance like 25W and will have its actual 15W.
I'm not sure if mXFR and STAPM are about TDP or directly to power consumption, but most likely is TDP, and need a tool like kill-a-watt to measure power consumption (although its measures full system)
This video will show how much performance is given by each TDP configuration (12W lowest, 25W highest, and 15W default configuration) with TDP burst disabled.
Take note that CineBench multi-core CPU test was taken before this test because recording software will interfere and greatly reduce the score. Also, CPU priority is set to Real-time with Task Manager to give maximum score potential.

Thanks for showing that changing cTDP can be done on some systems. Though with cTDP @15W I find the game hardly playable, it gets worse with cTDP @12W it isn't playable AT ALL. I wouldn't recommend setting cTDP any lower than 25W as even this is limit-playable.

I have a Samsung notebook 5 with Ryzen 5 2500u and vega 8 graphics. I increased my RAM from 8 to 12GB and my maximum gpu clock has changed from 1100mhz to 1300mhz. Memory speed has also increased from 1200 to 1600. Am i the only one experiencing this? Any help with actually using those clocks? Thanks
Hey Man, do you recommend I do this? I got a 3500u, 2x8 Ram, it's an HP. I feel the performance is so capped. Its also never warm, the laptop is a bit warm only.

if you still have that laptop, try messing the vrm setting inside ryzen controlller to 50, it will give you 50% plus perf.

How do you monitor gpu clocks on ravenridge mobile apu's? None of the programs I've tried show it.
MSI Afterburner (Rivatuner) + HWiNFO Sensor OSD.
Sometimes (in certain VGA driver, BIOS, etc) MSI fail to detect it, so use HWiNFO for that.

Power Options -> Change selected plan settings -> advanced settings -> minimum processor state 0%, maximum 50% or 99%
Advised to use high performance (create first if necessary), not balanced or power saver.

@@amperly putting minimum to 99% may lead to CPU running on normal P0 state which is on variable frequency.
Set minimum 0% also intended to reduce clock during low CPU load or idle, so it's a bit more power efficient and saves battery. My preference for min is 0%.
For your laptop, without any other tweaks.
It's better to put minimum to 0% and maximum to 99% on most graphical demanding games so more headroom of power for iGPU thus higher GPU clock, don't forget make sure CPU runs at 1.7 GHz max during gaming.

Acer has provided with 1gb vram but Lenovo has provided with 256mb only.
Don't worry about it, it just fixed allocation for VRAM, if the RAM is enough and program needs more it will use more than that.
I'm playing FCND with HD texture mod, eats 4GB of VRAM which 3GB allocated to dynamic VRAM (according to Task Manager), RAM usage total around 10GB (5GB for the game, 2GB for Windows and background process, and 3GB for additional VRAM), well I'm upgraded my RAM to 2x8GB on this one.
You can see on this video, for example, fixed VRAM (MEM) is 1GB plus dynamic RAM almost 1GB too, so total is around 2GB. So it's fine with 256MB of VRAM.

I think it's better to let the system allocate itself, especially if you only had 8GB of RAM, cut off to 7GB will hamper other program performance like chrome tab multi-tasking.

Make sure VRM set to adequate value like 45A and all wattage configuration set to 25W.

I have asus x505za Ryzen 5 2500u. In AMD uprof the TDP Limit is 17W, TDP fast is 30W, and TDP slow is 25W. Is that normal? Because I thought default configuration would be 15W. And I am getting high temperatures till 90. Please do help.
Yes I think it's normal, OEM could set TDP anywhere between 12 to 25W.
About the temp, looks like it's the time for your laptop stock paste to be be changed, get the best possible solution like Kryonaut.

Hai kak. Laptop saya Asus X505. Ryzen 5 2500. Saya coba unlock ke 25 bisa, gaming lancar, tapi kok gak nyampe semenit turun lagi ke 15? Di set auto apply tiap 10 detik tapi takut rusak cpu nya
Asus X505ZA memang begitu, auto apply gpp kok, pilih yang tertinggi, kalau 30 detik udah pasti ngga balik lagi ke 15W pakai itu aja, kalau bisanya paling tinggi 10 detik gpp.
Paling efeknya cuma cpu usage naik dikit saat auto apply, karena softwarenya ngeproses ulang.

i got Ryzen 5 3500U (Lenovo S340 14inch), and when i play Dota 2 (Fastest, 100% render, 1080P), it can reach up to 76 C with stock 15W TDP
This laptop has decent cover ventilation underneath, so the heat doesn't really build up in there despite having plastic body.
I'm using Kryonaut thermal paste, the cooling performance improved significantly, this laptop also can tweaked with max fan speed, so that's how I can sustain a decent temp.
Room temp also can play a bit.
I don't think you wanna put more hole to your laptop and to boost the fan speed (it's kinda difficult to find out how to do it manually).
So I would recommend repaste with better thermal paste, Kryonaut, 1g is more than enough, be careful of fake or unofficial product.
Hopefully you can get 25W with pretty safe temp bellow 90°C.

I already bought thermal grizzly kyronaut from trusted seller, but hesitant to apply it, since in the process of upgrading RAM on this laptop, I accidentaly broke one of the plastic clips that suppose to hold the back cover lol . Maybe I try to replace the thermal paste after 1-2 year. BTW, care to share the idle temp ? or temp when do daily activities like browsing web ? Thanks for the information thou
@@theorangecat2929 idle temp vary depends on room temp, around 40°C idle at 30°C room temp, light browsing up to a bit higher than 50°C.

Update driver performa nambah cukup signifikan dari driver bawaan atau driver lama (17.7 Crimson) ke Adrenalin 2019 terbaru.
Unlock TDP aman saja, bersifat sementara, bukan overclocking karena masih dalam spesifikasi clock. Simpelnya cuma mengkomunikasikan ke SMU sistem alias request.
Jauh lebih aman dari overclock, tapi tetap perhatikan satu hal penting yaitu suhu, mendekati 95°C tidak aman, baiknya dibawah 90°C (kalau terlalu rendah performa juga ngga bisa maksimal).
Asus X505ZA kasusnya sering masalah up TDP karena sistemnya ngebalikin konfigurasi awal saat dibuat game, kalau buat multi task kurang tau. Intinya settingsnya balik ke semula.
Tapi tidak ada salahnya dicoba, cek TDP bisa pakai AMD uProf, pilih see what's guzzling, pilih controller, start profile.

It will drain battery if the power supply isn't enough, but don't worry it will be just like common use of battery (life), no damages.
Estimated life of processor not really affected if the temp is still good enough.

Updating Windows 10 to version 1809, update the latest display driver (now version 19.4.3), highly recommended to do it with AMD Cleanup Utility through safe mode.
Optimize windows by disable unused services or heavy disk load services like prefetch or simply use SSD.
If you still using single channel RAM, make it dual (but I'm sure this laptop model, mostly already has dual all around the world).
Use RyzenController and set to all 35W, 84C, 74A, 1200 MHz, set minimum processor state to 0% and maximum to 99% (use high-performance power plan).
Set fan to max speed (search my video about that) and change thermal paste if you can (the best compatible is Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut, 1g is enough and relatively cheap)

I have dual channel ram but it shows it's frequency 2133 I guess....it is not 2400......should I get two ram Sticks of frequency 2400 or the slower one is ok.
@@zorohasskills where did you checked it? If you're using Windows task manager or something like that, isn't accurate.
Try using CPU-Z, check Memory tab, if DRAM Frequency is ~1200 MHz = 2400 MHz (DDR = double data rate).
@@zorohasskills upgrading 2133 MHz to 2400 MHz only boost game fps by around 4%.
The other factor is RAM quality, if it was bad (like my Micron RAM), replacing it with decent RAM like Corsair Vengeance 2400 MHz could give additional 7% boost compared to 2400 MHz Micron.
Other than games, some task will get benefit from better quality and faster frequency RAM such as compressing/archiving files which pretty good gain.

Thermal limit setahuku sama-sama 75°C
Sistim pendingin bagus Asus.
Asus default masih 15W, jadi harus konfigurasi ke 25W biar mantap.
Acer (tanpa dGPU seperti Radeon 535) default sudah 25W.
Tapi info terakhir, konfigurasi buat menaikkan temp limit di Asus engga work. Kalau Acer suhu stabil maks 85°C kalau mau naikkan limit temperatur.

Tergantung cooling system tiap laptop. Pakai 25W, laptop 1 suhu paling tinggi 70°C, laptop 2 80°C.
Nah kalau keduanya limit suhu 75°C. Laptop pertama engga masalah, cooling lebih bagus.
Laptop kedua yang harus dinaikkan limitnya ke 80°C karena cooling kurang memadai untuk 25W.
Kalau enggak bisa dinaikkan limitnya, bisa perbagus coolingnya, ganti thermal paste yang high end (bukan liquid metal), pakai vacuum cooler atau sebagainya.
Saat main game. CPU limit ke 1.6 GHz seperti di video ini saja, suhu bisa lebih adem dibanding saat CPU tiap core dibiarkan bebas, naik turun, suhu lebih panas. Membatasi CPU juga memberi headroom lebih ke iGPU Vega 8 biar bisa dapat clockspeed lebih tinggi.

Software:
1. Update Windows to the latest available.
2. Update the latest adrenaline driver on the AMD website (clean uninstall using AMD Cleanup Utility first via safe mode), update the chipset driver (select Athlon mobile FP5).
3. Optional: Update BIOS to the latest v1.15 on the Acer website [follow the instruction carefully].
Hardware:
1. Upgrade RAM with 8 IC per RAM not only 4 IC and the 2x8GB will also be sufficient.
2. Change thermal paste to best possible, I'm using Kyronaut (make sure it's original product).
3. SSD is optional for better program loading or responsiveness, at least use for Windows.
Ryzen Controller:
This laptop already has high 25W TDP by default, so I recommend for daily use = 84C temp limit, 1200 min&max transmission. The rest unchecked.
Optional: use only with better cooling (thermal paste), STAPM-PPT 30W or 35W, VRM 75A.
Make sure VRM set will be stable on games, no instability in frame time/shutter, CPU/GPU clock unstable spikes 400 low MHz, otherwise uncheck it later. (PC restart will reset the settings).
Power options: Create a high-performance power plan. Minimum processor state 0%. Maximum 99% for GPU bound games (Far Cry 5, The Witcher for example), 100% for CPU bound (like GTA V, Dota 2).
CPU/GPU bound here tested by yourself to check which game needs higher avg CPU or GPU clock.
All of this is safe if you do it right. You can go to discord for additional info.

Cuma test CPU, suhu dibatasi sistem 75°C (saat itu belum ada config buat naikin limit suhu, juga belum pakai cooling external/ custom max fan).
Pasta bawaan clockspeed CPU turun sampai 1.9 GHz, pakai Kryonaut jadi 2.4 GHz, suhu sama-sama 75°C. Full load pakai stress test Prime95 15 menit+.
Kira-kira cukup signifikan lah perbedaannya.
Lihat2 review 2 tahun pun masih bagus performanya, tinggal ganti aja kalau performa cooling mulai turun bisa sekalian bersihin kipasnya.

Opsimasi gamenya memang buruk, itu main di 1080p low, 768p low atau gimana?
Sama coba cek monitoring, CPU clock dan % berapa, dibanding sama GPU (pastikan yg nyala R540). Kalau GPU clock rendah atau % rendahd an cpu % tinggi, berarti kurang CPUnya. Settingannya ya tinggal naikkan STAPM & PPT ke 25W, transmission ke 1200 MHz, sisanya coba diuncheck dulu.

@@ArifIrawan saya pribadi tidak menyarankan beli Ryzen 7 2700U Vega 10 gan.
Karena performa cuma naik sangat sedikit karena TDP juga sama (25W) kecuali mau pakai custom TDP yang harus makin tinggi dibandingkan Ryzen 5 2500U (yang coolingnya saja kurang kuat walau sudah coba ganti pasta terbaik dan custom fan speed maksimum) harga naik banyak.
Sama-sama dual core, speed naik dikit, Vega 10 ngga beda jauh jumlah Compute Units (beda 2) dibanding Vega 3, biar Vega 10 jalan maks 1300 MHz juga lebih panas dan butuh TDP lebih tinggi.
7.5jt vs 9jt menurut official store (setelah harga yang 2700U dikurangi karena ada SSDnya), beda 1.5jt performa beda kecil.
Sedikit lagi bisa dapat laptop gaming performa jauh lebih tinggi terutama di graphics dan cooling superior, atau mending i5-8250U + MX150 juga sama-sama 8GB RAM, no SSD.
Beda kalau Ryzen 3 2200U Vega 3 ke Ryzen 5 2500U Vega 8.
Dual core VS quad core (2x lebih banyak) dan performa sekitar 80% lebih baik menurut multi core CineBench, singe core beda dikit (test 25W TDP setelah 2500U dibuat biar engga kepanasan).
Vega 8 jumlah CUs hampir 3x lebih banyak dibanding Vega 3, frequency sama 1100MHz, performa sekitar 2x lebih tinggi (benchmark 3DMark Fire Strike graphics score)
Harga? Kalau sama-sama sudah 8GB RAM.
7.5 vs 6.4jt beda 1.1jt performa beda jauh.

@@elham7459 nah ini gan pencerahan yg selama ini saya cari2, memang bener kata agan, ryzen 7 2700u dengan ryzen 5 2500u cma beda speed dan CU, saya kira karena vega 10 CU nya lbh banyak, ketika kita custom di TDP nya, maka kemampuannya bisa jauh mengungguli vega 8, namun ternyata, dibutuhkan sistem cooling yg diatas standar, saya ada budget 10jt, kalo gitu ambil ryzen 2500u aja, sisa budgetnya yg 2,5jt ada saran gak gan mau dibeliin apa?
saya mau ambil Acer Aspire 3 A315-41 Ryzen 5 2500U

So this laptop is by default configured for the best performance . Increasing power (in ma) slows down the games , but it works perfectly with the stock configuration. Is there any way to improve the performance ?
Yes, by default, it's already 25W which is higher than the most laptop config (15W).
Tweaking could slow down the performance if configured lower than the default, eg. VRM value by default is around 45A, lower than that will result in lower performance.
Improving thermal (so the power isn't limited by temp) & tweaking (improving temp limit to safe point, put transmission freq to steady max 1200, etc) to get better results.

@@ShaelsStudio I think first to do for untouched A315-41 (eg stock thermal paste) is to use RyzenController:
Increase temp limit to 84C, Min/Max transmission 1200 MHz, SOC Min/Max to 200 MHz, STAPM & PPT Slow/Fast Limit to 30W.
The rest remain unchecked (to stay at default config).
Then (for GPU focused games), go to power options, change plan setting of your selected power plan (eg High Performance), change the minimum processor state to 0% and maximum processor state to 99%.
This will set max CPU clock to 1.7 GHz, so less heat, less/more efficient resources used for CPU, and this will improve the GPU headroom, so it get higher clock.
You can also set max fan speed to support the cooling but it could have negative impact (laptop's fan lifespan decreased faster) so use it wisely.

I will try it and let you know how it goes , I play GTA at medium high settings 720p I get around 40-50 and sometimes 35 fps , and also watchdogs 2 at lowest settings and lowest resolution at 90 pixel density , I get around 30- 35 fps , I really want to improve watchdogs 2 performance. I will try it.
Jadi, kalo mau naikkin tdp sampe 45w apakah solusinya dengan cara ganti charger yg di atas 45w gitu gan?
Kalau mau naikkin TDP sampai 45W perlu cooling system yang bagus.
Sejauh ini cuma Acer Nitro (laptop gaming, dual fan kecepatan tinggi) yang bisa stabil 45W.
Syarat lain charger harus 65W minimal.
@@elham7459 Anyway, I've changed the TDP to 45w. But, why did stapm power won't go up to 45? Why does It stucks between 25w-30w?
And even it will. The increase would be slowly. Is there a way to increase the stapm power even quicker?

You can check my latest video and see the description about "package power limit", there's additional code/ configuration for it, this will allow processor to use higher amount of power (most of program stuck @25W maximum).

I have Acer aspire 3 powered by ryzen 5 2500u and Vega 8 gpu, I mistakenly thought this can game better than I5 with Mx150 and bought it, but it is not even close enough. And even some older games like GTA 4 is not playable in reasonable frame rates because of limited amount of vram fixed to 1gb approx. Iam frustrated now, I have seen your videos like force installing those adrenaline drivers and increasing the TDP, and over clocking the gpu , I don't know which one should I try, and which one would work because I saw lot of posts explaining about the side effects and other problems associated with doing this , you have already done lot of videos but everything is just cluttered can you put simple and detailed video on doing the recommended workarouds that don't affect the performance and user experience or if you can't atleast do email me @ surya.j.207@gmail.com

I think if you did it correctly, nothing bad will happen.
The latest driver is good, I use 19.1.1 version for now.
For TDP configuration I used to try all 35W, for temperature limit I recommend 80C, VRM current to the max with a max processor 1.6 GHz (50% from power options).
If you not playing games, set it back to 100%, and TDP configuration all 25W, temperature set to 80C.
This still not a complete guide, but I planned to create one soon, may take a long time.
after doing all these thing will it be equal to mx150????

Is this risky
Anything can be risky.
For this one is very safe, because 12-25W is specification from AMD.
Also make sure if you currently have 15W and want to try 25W, processor temp doesn't go near 95°C (max temp specification) and you'll be fine.
Most of Ryzen mobile laptop has temp limitation
If your laptop has temp limit (eg 85°C), you don't need to worry about it because if you set your TDP from 15 to 25W, and max temp rises from 70 to 90°C
Your max temp will be max 85°C and actual power draw will slighty less than 25W (like 22W) but still better if you have 15W default set by your laptop manufacturer.
You can also modify TDP value whatever you want, 21, 22, 23W... Or maybe over 30W if you sure what you're doing.

@@user-so3wm8te1i it's pretty safe (make sure it's stable and temp is good) and doesn't void warranty.
I've been told that this method can't not change hardware limit and only works by communicating system SMU. No changes to hardware, no trace, and will reset after system power off (after shutdown, restart, etc you'll need to reapply the 'TDP').
I wanna buy asus x512da it comes with 15tdp can i do it 25 tdp and can my temprature like 60-70 celsius?
X512DA cooling is subpar, I don't think it can handle 25W sustained under 70C without an extreme cooling mod.

@@elham7459 problem solved, ternyata VRM terlalu kecil. Tapi ada masalah lagi... kadang2 STAPM limit turun ke 15 ato 12 setiap beberapa menit tapi abis sedetik langsung naik lagi ke 30. Jadinya di game sering tiba2 fps turun drastis selama 1-2 detik jdi gk enak. Di ryzen controller padahal udah set reapply settings every 1 second. Masalahnya thermal throttling kali?

@@bacongaming5447 sistem Asus memang suka reset, kalau ngga diset 1 second nanti saat balik ke 15 ngga balik ke 30 lagi (karena ngga auto set tiap 1 detik).
Info dari user Asus, cara yang efektif pakai metode lama, lebih ribet, metode "Clover".
