    I am pretty sure you can achieve this same effect by inking your rough sketch lines first, using the magic wand tool to select the "inked" section you want to shade (like inside the arm band) and then just setting your new top (shading) layer to "mutiply" - it will then keep you shading tones locked inside the wand selected area on the new layer (no need for the base level masking color which would be super time consuming on a large detailed illustration). Try it:
    1) Use your ink pen and rectangle tool on layer 1 (you should have a black "inked" rectangle"
    2) Create a new layer above the rectangle layer - call it "shading layer"
    3) Set the new (shading) layer's attributes to "mulitply"
    4) Now go back to the rectangle layer and with the magic wand tool. select the area inside the rectangle
    5) With that area selected (marching ants), now go back to the shading layer, choose your airbrush tool and bright red color and start shading - voila, it stays inside the inked lines even though it is on another layer.
    One caveat to this - depending on how loose your"ink" layer is, you will need to play with the tolerance on the magic wand tool to select the desired area. If you draw with well defined ink lines (like I do), this technique is a game changer.
    Just thought I would share - good channel!

    Set your sketch or ink layer from Normal mode to Inverse Alpha Mask (this allows you to see through said sketch/ink layer over on the layer below it [your mask selection layer]). On your mask layer, you can now clearly see edges on both side of a hard ink or brush stroke, which let's you choose if you want the selection mask to be on either side of a stroke/line without having to adjust opacity levels on either layer. When finished, just revert the top layers mode to Normal. I'd recommend labeling your layers so you know what they are in case you wish to toggle them off to avoid selecting content on them later on. I do this with rough sketches, guide lines, perspective point/lines, etc.

      @@fabio_gioffre given that it doesn't have a ridiculous price tag like other software, I didn't mind shelling out a 1-time purchase for premium features and updates. I only don't like that it's only available from the MS Store. I'd prefer a standalone installer since the store version prohibits accessing the install directory for plug-ins use or other possibilities. I do like that it's pretty stable now and is very versatile compared to the mobile device versions. Plus you have to pay for it seperately on each platform. I would more feature for animation on it though.

    I think it would be so much nicer if Sketchbook just caught up and added the masking ability. Like procreate, having clipping mask, mask and alpha lock. It would just speed up our work flow so much more. I have a 5th gen iPad Pro i use mainly for my art and design work, but I also have a touchscreen laptop and stylus for the same reason , but sadly, from what I can see, neither sketchbook or sketchable has any type of masking, so i dont use my laptop for art work as planned. Not sure if there is any drawing software out there that is Hal;f way decent that also has masking

    • @fabio_gioffre
      @fabio_gioffre  2 года назад

      ya I totally agree! iys unfortunate that sketchbook seems to have stopped updating/caring about the software. I am thinking of switching over to procreate. how has your experience been with that?

    • @LGeeThomas
      @LGeeThomas 2 года назад

      @@fabio_gioffre Procreate is absolutely amazing in my opinion. The only downside is it is for iPad ONLY, with no plans for android or computers. But procreate is so smooth and a simple UI. The brushes that come with it is fantastic, but the 3rd party brushes and sets you can get for it is WOW…with procreate you can also do animation work and even upload images and videos to do rotoscoping work and photo editing and it works flawlessly and smooth.. I absolutely love procreate. But i also need something for the laptop, and the best thing out there that also has masking is Adobe Fresco (which also has the vector side, so will have to be my go to for the laptop)

      @@fabio_gioffre i know designers/artist who use a regular iPad and never had complaints. I personally use the 5th gen iPad Pro so I cant speak on anything but that device as for how it works. As for the masking. I love it when i do work for clients. The masking allows me to add shading, colors, textures etc etc that are non destructive, meaning i can go back in later if i need to make changes because a client changes their mind. Without masking, anything i do becomes permanent and hard to change later

    This seems so complicated to the way I do it. Create group, draw your outline on top layer, create two layers below it. On middle layer use the Fill Bucket and Sample All Layers. Fill. Then go to blending mode and select Alpha Mask. Then every layer below it will be within that Clipped Area. Takes 5 seconds to do.

  • @anahata2009

    I confess I'm getting lost when you add the new layer above--I'm a newbie to Sketchbook and digital art in general. Is that a transparent layer? If the layer is above, I don't know why it isn't completely obscuring everything you've done below . . .
    I'm still searching for a way to do this easily, so I don't have to invest in an iPad and switch to Procreate.
    For now, I found a simple solution for a pseudo clipping mask (and yes, probably a thousand people already thought of it, but whatever). It doesn't work for all my needs, but for some of them. Maybe your way is easier, but my confusion is keeping me from fully grasping it. So, here's my solution for anyone who might find it useful:
    1) open new sketch.
    2) Use the bucket/fill tool and fill the whole sketch with white.
    3) Put a new layer below and fill it with black (or whatever non-white color you want. Pale gray can be good for a light sketch).
    4) Go back to the first, white layer and draw with the eraser tool.
    5) When you want to fill in areas in your sketch, the magic wand tool and/or eraser, and/or 'Ctrl X' can help clear those spaces for color/texture application.
    It doesn't work for all situations, but I've found it helps for simple drawings. I hope someone finds this useful.

    • @fabio_gioffre
      @fabio_gioffre  3 года назад

      hey thanks for the tip! thats sounds like a good way to do things. and the reason the layer above doesn't cover everything is because it's a blank layer, you can add as many layers as you want after you make the 'magic wand' selection
