Just when I thought I had done a video on every engine swapped Mazda Miata in existence, there's always ONE MORE! Today we hop in this Mazda NC Miata with a Ford Fusion engine swap! This motor was also found in cars such as the Mazda 6 - so it stays in the FoMoCo family! We compare and constrast the other popular engine swaps but most importantly talk about the insanely low budget and cost it is to do this. Let's for for a drive and talk about it!

How’s your girl’s Miata project progressing? Been months in the making since heard updates on the progress. Knew a ton of parts were on delay or back-order because of supply-chain disruptions. As cool as it is seeing you drive an give takes on other folks project cars do still love your projects as well. Thanks for always keeping it real & honest David

@@Dudeman9339 glad i'm not the only one who noticed but i don't think it's wrong, since this was big publicity anyway. He was basically a 1.2mil ad. Still gonna go check the guy out though, and for those that want to too, ShiftyIntentions is the guy.
For many NC owners who want more power, this is the ideal swap. The 2.5L should have come with the NC, but alas, it was not to be. This is a relatively cheap swap and the best band for buck swap in a miata in most NCs opinions. Thanks for reviewing it TDIB!
Yep
As its a Japanese brand I'm guessing the 2.0L was used to lower the taxes by a lot in Japan, bit in NA the 2.5 should have been included for sure
mazdaspeed owners have been doing this swap with the high comp DI heads for years, just a reliable setup
Whelp, there goes the prices on the 2.5s.......
@@sevenmileshome I know. Happens every time. But 2.5s are readily available. And there are more motor swaps than the 2.5. This is just the easiest/cheapest swap for this platform.
For those curious I’ll post a basic mod list here in the comments:
-Mazda/Ford 2.5L
-Esslinger Stage 2 Cams
-MazdaSpeed3 Valve Springs
-Roadstersport 1.8 Big Header
-Racing Beat Race Midpipe
-Custom Vibrant “Ultra Quiet” Axle-back
-Megan Racing 4” blast tip
-Replica AEM CAI
-Enkei Compe 16x7 Wheels
-Falken RT660 Tires (225/50/16)
-Ebay Special Coilovers (I know…I Know)
-RX8 Swaybars Front and rear
-Powerstop “Trackday Spec” brake kit
-Stainless brained front brake lines
-Hard Dog rollbar
-OMP Champ-R drivers seat
-Racequip passenger seat
-Crow harnesses
-Exedy race clutch
-stiff engine mounts
-5 speed swap (originally a 6 speed car)
-Gracing Shifter
-APR GTC300 Wing
-Racebred Components front Splitter
-Custom Panda livery with Tofu Shop decals from SpinnyWhoosh graphics
On 91 octane it makes 201WHP and 192WTQ on a Dynojet dyno. OEM ecu custom tuned by my good friend Cameron.
*edit* I totally forgot to clean under the hood and it is embarrassing. Roughly a month prior I slid into the mud at a drift event. I was so worried about the exterior of the car for this video that I forgot to even look under the hood 🤦♂️
Why did you swap it for a 5-speed?
@@zakvilanilam3388 longer gears
@@zakvilanilam3388 I preferred the gearing on track. Seemed to be in a lot of situations with the 2.0L where I would need to either ride limiter for awkwardly long or shift up before immediately shifting down again while running the 6 speed. With the extra mid range torque of this motor and a longer third gear I basically never have that issue anymore.
Plus 5 speeds are a lot cheaper. I can get replacements for around $250-$300 versus $600+ for the 6MT
@@ShiftyIntentions Got it, thanks. Cool car you've built.
@@zakvilanilam3388 thanks man, I had a lot of help though!
Yep, the 2.5 is honestly the engine that should have come in the NC! What's nice about this swap is that the engine is only weighs 12 lbs more than the stock 2 ltr. As a result your front and rear weight is still close to that 50/50 ratio that makes the Miata such a great handling car and the torque that it so desperately needed. I did the 2.5 ltr swap about 2 years ago and also had a turbo installed at the same time by Dynotronics and have not regretted doing it. The car has the acceleration that I love as well as the handling that I originally bought the car for. Would highly recommend it. If your ever back down here in Louisiana, I would be more than happy to let you try it out.!
@thatdudeinblue
Fun fact the all aluminum LS engine out of a Corvette is also pretty much the same weight as the dinky little four-cylinder in the Miata . And in a vehicle that small it could probably get better than the 27 miles per gallon highway that the Corvette gets .
@@OlderthanIlookyoungerthanIfeel not to knock your idea because it’s actually sick that a v8 can weight that little but I think one issue with that might be fitting it all in the little car and making sure the engine placement is properly placed relative the the axles and what not to keep the handling there. Basically all thought it’s similar weight and all, where you put the weight is important too but at the same time if you could get it in there right it would be cool for sure
@@tommybobommy9208 It actually sits lower because it's a single in block cam engine , it's not any longer than a inline 4 . And there are companies that specialize in doing that exact swap . Taylor Rey has won more than a few drift comps in his LS Miata . Personally I would prefer to just have the Corvette in the first place , I can fit in that car .
@@OlderthanIlookyoungerthanIfeel lol plus I think we’d all prefer to see a vette over the Miata, but I didn’t know all that, I appreciate you sharing, it’s a wild car world where you can just buy all these kits for putting something like that into such a small car and if you can do it without tons of fab work that’s even cooler which you probably can since you said there’s companies/individuals who specialize in the specific swap/ similar ones. Cars are fun🙂
When I read Ford Fusion swap I was first thinking the twin turbo 2.7 V6 engine from the Ford Fusion Sport. This is perhaps the most respectable, tame swap imaginable. Imo the size of engine that should be in a Miata
I thought the same thing. That would have been killer
You could as well go for a V6 Jaguar swap to later supercharge it.
@@niceboi6364 Really? O_o
@@niceboi6364 why, when you can take the 2.5 MZR and supercharge that for cheaper and have similar power and still run on 87 octane
You wanna use the 3.0tt. EDIT: why? It’s already a motor setup to be longitudal. The 2.7 is a transverse motor. The 3.0tt OEM turbos are better and can hold way more power. The 3.0 also mild bolt on makes way way more then a fully bolt on 2.7
I've always loved the NC. It was born during a recession. It was the best Mazda could do with existing parts on the shelf and they did a bang up job. Glad I have my 2014 Club. I have no plans to get rid of it. Hoping to do this swap sometime down the road.
Did it on my Mazda 3 ,went from 2l to 2.5l but kept the same ecu with the tune I had programed on the dyno but for the 2L ,kept the intake and exhaust the same . Was fun could hit near 7k rpm with the 2.5 who I think is limited to 6.5k or sum usually since I was running the ECU from the 2L . Gas mileage was bad
You're correct. I drive a Fusion with the motor and redline on the speedo is right at 6500 with an extension(I'm assuming for fuel cut-off purposes) at 7K
Im a MK 2 Focus owner and want to get the 2.5 as well. In our Transit @ our warehouse, redline is over 8, so I think with good tuning and possibly valves/retainers you should be able to 8k+
This is the engine I'm currently trying to get my hands on to swap into my focus because it's actually even easier to swap one of these into a first gen focus then it is to a Miata
First gen focus with this would be super fun lol, I'd recommend getting a limited slip diff tho, without it you'll spin a lot in 1st gear. Great idea, I hope it works out for you!
@@SomeOne_86 I plan on it down the road but an LSD is a big expense right now considering I'm pretty sure for a good one I'm looking at $1,000 plus I'd have to get a transmission shop to install it cuz I ain't about to tear down a transmission and risk f****** up putting it back together and that probably ain't cheap
@@kartaku132 I paid $900 for a 2.0 ecoboost out of a ford escape for my focus ST, you ever thought about that motor?
@@robreeto A cool swap but a lot more work
@@robreeto oh I have quite a bit actually but I don't have the time nor the money to figure out how to get an EcoBoost to run in my car
Love my track NC even with the 2.0L. My plan was to run that engine till it died and replace with the 2.5L. I thought I was happy with the 2.0L and then I blew it up at Road America in May and forced my hand early. Two weeks from blown 2.0L to a completed 2.5L Hybrid swap. I’m so glad it happened, the car is perfect this way 170whp 180wtq.
people will do anything to these cars except leave them stock, it's amazing!
Clowns
Most car guys don't buy stock cars and say this the best it can be also after living next to a Ford engineer, he once said most of the cars we get have to pass through so many people and are so neutered by the time we get them from what they started with . Like the gt500 before the other Ford higher ups and people who look to see hwo it could be made cheaper , and be under warranty had 850hp
Because stock is just not enough
If you want a car to be stock go buy a Ferrari they hate people customizing their cars so much they will sue you
Think of it as having aged from “car” into a “platform”. Lol 😂😂
@@randyjr3479 what like federal emissions laws n standards☠️
My Ford Fusion has this engine. I love it! It’s not very fast in the fusion but it’s a great solid motor. Have had zero issues so far!
I've had an NC Miata since January as my first car, and it's been fantastic. I actually plan on doing the exact same engine swap because of it's tuning potential, and the fact that my stock 2.0 has high miles. I can't recommend this platform enough as it's arguably the best Miata platform.
the only issue I've had with my NC is relative lack of aftermarket support compared to na/nb miatas, but that doesn't bother me because I don't plan on insane modifications
U might aswell put a vvt1.8 and turbo it with a built bottom
So glad you mentioned the initial D exterior. I was waiting
I've had my NC for almost 10 years, and this swap is going to happen one these days. It really is an underrated car, especially if you just do some basic suspension upgrades.
This guy is the reason I pulled the trigger on my NC. Answered a few questions and gave me a few guiding points . Cheers to an incredible view and great driving review🍻
Am I really!? Glad I could help buddy!
I got an ex-stance NC on a trade that I turned into a super budget track car and it did waaayyyy better than I expected. I sold it a few weeks ago because I got my turbo NA running, but I want a better NC chassis to build right (half the underbraces were ripped off from it being slammed😓)
Just get an rx8 they cheaper than these now.
@@TANGYHATCHY Yea but.. RX8 🤮
@@TANGYHATCHY Rx8 is like 40,000 New Zealand dollars here and more here than Japan. Amazing chassis though
@@Perry.... What wrong with them? They look sexy as fuck with minimal body work
Not typically a fan of the NC but this is making me appreciate them more. Though the ND is a step up in all ways (gf has an ND2 and it's a go kart) these are a lot more affordable.
except for the trans, they love to blow up on the nd's
The Targa top on the RF is absolutely not a step up over the NC and most guys will tell you the NC has less body roll than the ND
@@particleinthewave8378 Slight body roll can easily be fixed (the body roll statement is overblown) curb weight differences cannot if you want to use it on the street.
Good choice, I've heard the 2.5 is extremely durable, both in hybrid form like the maverick has, or gas only.

I did this swap in my mzr3. Not too much more power but fmdefinitely noticable especially with some high flow header and decent suspension. The 2.5L revs awesome. Gets up there pretty quick. Fun slow cars

As some who drives a Ford Fusion this is cool as helllll. My Fusion is from 2008 and has the NA V6 duratec 30 motor, I love it but man does this sound good 8:19 😍
My 06 Five Hundred has the Duratec 30. Great motor.
My 06 Mazda 6 has the duratec 30 as well and I was hoping it would be that engine in this car by the title😂
Thanks for posting this! I have been wanting a Miata since I sold my DSM. An affordable swap that’s easy would make the cars a lot more fun. And I got a decent sized family and money don’t grow on trees, so….. that’s right up my ally!
I have an 04 NB stock aside from suspension and clutch, 5 speed and I cannot let it go. I love love love LOVE it. Miata is just the most fun you can have for the buck.
I prefer the "talk with the owner" videos, your ability to interview and drive at the same time along with the feeling of "just going for a drive with a friend" going on makes it.
I had a swapped mazda 3 with a fusion engine. Ran like a top and for me it was drop and plug in
This isn't even weird it's basically an OEM swap
makes sense. mazda designed motor
@@deondrejones3399 no its not.
yes it is. duratec is just a rebadge mazda L motor. learn you something
@@aaronmcconkey1062 it essentially is, at most there’s some small liberties and changes Ford did themselves but the design is still Mazdas, you could make a better argument for the ecoboost since it’s even further away and has a different head design but all started life in the heads of Mazda designers
That generation engine was used in Mazda 3, 5, 6. Ford Duratec/Mazda L 2.0, 2.3, 2.5 4 cylinder engines. That engine is the same one in my ‘12 Mazda 5.
Holy shit. You made me love an NC. This livery, stance, and body mods really, really elevate the looks of the car. Great work.
This is actually a very pretty car and I love the swap choice. Sounds like great bang for the buck imo. Thanks for the great video!

These are very popular swaps over in europe for the Fiesta ST's as well since its just a bigger displacement Duratec engine same as the NC they are lovely!

I know its not the most popular year but I love that year of the mazda miata
This NC’s sound reminds me of my FBO 2.5 swapped first gen Mazda3. Such a great engine. NA or boost!
had an 08 mazda 3 with the 2.3 sounds the exact same. brings back memories
I had this engine in my old Mazda 3 and loved it.
i love the sound of that integra in your intro
So, I know little to nothing about the Miata platform, but I would love to see two engine swaps on this channel in the future. A 3.7L V6 NA and a supercharged Jaguar straight 6.
My brother did the Fusion swap and added a turbo kit on his NC. Such a blast to drive at about 300whp right now.
Turbo 2.5L cars make some serious power dude.
Really smart original idea! Also that’s a great paint/ stripe design for a NC , makes the nose look a lot less silly .
This just made my day! I have this exact car livery in forza on my NC miata.
I actually designed the livery using Forza Motorsport 7 and showed a wrap shop screenshots from the game 😂
Ditch the wing in the exhaust, and I actually think that is a really sweet Miata. But it's not my car so as long as the owner likes it, more power to him. I really like the swap.
It’s a nine lives racing wing developed specifically for this car and is 100% functional on track. He has it paired up with the front splitter to complete the package
@@LOWK3YMX5 my dude that is a generic APR wing. Nowhere close to a 9LR wing in terms of performance.
THE D25/MZR is a very stout motor and parts for that motor is plentiful. Esslinger, cosworth, mountune, jbr, sbd to name a few

Im definitely considering this, especially if my 2.0 blows up.
Some extra torque at lower revs would be very welcome, especially because the Aussie cars have a taller final drive (3.6 I think) so there's really not much happening below 2500 or 3000 revs. Perhaps a shorter diff would solve that though.
Good thing about this swap is that parts like cams are interchangeable with the 2.0 too.
I know of an amazing 2.4l 4 cylinder engine to swap in here, but no one would believe me if I said it.
One of these days, I’ll spill the beans!
Is that referencing the 2.0 head on a 2.5 block? (Or something along those lines). iirc esslinger and a couple others make the custom rods and pistons
I have an nb2 and I love my interior. Lol
A guy in our local group has the 2.5 swap with a fab9 turbo on it. It's rowdy for sure!!!
Thanks for watching and showing love.

Ive had a chance to drive a very very similar setup. And yes i very much agree that the 2.5 shouldve come stock
always wanted to see someone put a ford 2.3 ecoboost in one of these
Yes! Ecoboost blocks are also CGI (compacted graphite iron) and designed to handle big boost
@@Jarmezrocks the 2.3Ls really seem to blow up a lot with higher boost though. I think I’d rather have a port-injected motor for boost.
This is funny because I was doing research for the 2.5 right now this week I'm doing same engine in my nc micro blew up and this was the cheapest option too
Did this swap to my NC. For some reason I sold it a couple months after. Worst mistake I ever made. Oh and then NCs tripled in value haha.
A lot of California NC drivers do this swap cause it's so easy to fool the Smog guy lol
Its getting harder and harder to do so. If there's even a custom tune on your car, you'll technically "pass". The thing that sucks is that it'll throw a red flag for your car in the system, so the next time smog comes around, you'll automatically be state ref'd. It happened to me with an 01 cobra I had.
This is some genius level thinking haha. 50whp with the factory cat still on the cat!
I wish I could’ve got David to review my Fusion before I sold it,2012 V6 CAI E-85 tune 300hp
They talked over each other a handful of times and interrupted each other quite a few times when one of them would begin to talk lol. All good tho, great conversation, video. Dope Miata!!!
I was definitely a little too talkative 😂. I was just really excited. David is a super cool dude and it was a lot of fun.
Dude has taylor ray vibes to him all day. Nasal voice, beard, humble, intelligent. You may have a sub.
I really appreciate the compliment. Taylor Ray is a super cool dude! Honestly man I have had a hard time keeping up with RUclips and have been thinking about just letting go of the channel entirely. I should probably try to work a little harder on uploads though. Thanks for watching the video!
I got a fusion with a 2.5 and 132k plus miles still runs great.
I've seen this guy mobbing out near North Liberty, IA! I recognize that license plate from anywhere hahaha. What a small world.

A good motor swap idea would be the Ford 3.0 ecoboost v6. It has 400 hp and is quite light
This was a really cool and practical swap. My dream Miata build would be a supercharged K24 swap.
Shit, when I had a K24, all I wanted to do was swap it for an LS4😂
A supercharged K24 swapped Miata would be pretty cool tho
My hopeful goal for this car is a 10,000rpm capable Honda K20, but that is a long ways off.
My money no object dream Miata build would be a turbo K24 track monster. KMiata had one they bring to every event they host and it is literally the coolest sounding car I have ever heard…plus like 600whp.
I bet if the NC had a fast manual top and THIS engine from the factory, it would've sold far better and been more respected by NA and NB overhypers.
It’s only really disrespected by NA/NB people because it’s “heavy.” But most people don’t realize your average NC only weight like 150lbs more than the Average NB. You can literally get a stock NC that weighs 2450lbs IIRC. That’s still a dang light car, and out of the box they’re more capable in every single way.
I saw the title and was hoping for an EcoBoost swap but the 2.5 turned out really nice actually. Very cool! Miata wins again haha

My buddy had a na that was klze 2.5l v6 swapped from a Ford probe years ago and that thing would get it!
Thanks for watching and showing love.

The RUclips channel cars and cameras Miata had a ford motor put in his Miata years ago
The 2.5 Ford Duratec/Mazda L series is such an underappreciated engine IMO; cheap, lightweight, manual transmissions are everywhere (both FWD and RWD), people are making 400 WHP with just a turbo, head gasket and head studs.
Agreed
The NC is finally getting some love in the car world and it’s about damn time 😤 I grew up with NAs and NBs but apples to apples the NC is just such a leap forward aside from the very subjective aesthetics
Thanks for watching and showing love.

100% dude.
Couldn't agree more. Lucky I got mine before they really catch on
Was wondering when you’d cover this swap, did this motor in my old 2007 mazda3 sedan

I'd be interested to see a Toyota 2AR-FXE, sort of like what tall Ben is doing on Gears and Gasoline.
YES
Why would you use an FXE? That's the atkinson cycle version for hybrids. Genuinely asking
@@SomeOne_86 because something about power. Youll have to go watch the video.
Go watch frankenstein Motor works,he is doing alot of 2arfxe things
I've seen this car driving past my house a few times and at local shows, never would have guess its motor swapped.
Really?? Small world man, where do you live?
@@ShiftyIntentions I live in north liberty. 😅
@@EmilyS15213 oh yeah then you probably see it around a lot lol. You should come to cars and coffee this Saturday morning at HyVee! It goes from 8am-10am 🤙
@@ShiftyIntentions oh yeah! I definitely will, Saturdays are hard for me, definitely going to the one in Hiawatha on Sunday same time I believe
Remember the days when the crackle pop craze did not exist and you actually got to hear exhaust....yeah. This reminds me of those days. I blame YOU Jaguar for starting the no hearing the exhaust craze. The Evora has one of the best natural exhaust sounds left, its unmolested by crackle pop trash.

Ok but what about the 3.0L V6 that went into the Mazda6/Ford Fusion?
Or the TT from the fusion sport. Might not fit, but it would be cool to see someone try.
I wanna try to swap a 3.0 in a miata. Good sounding motors with decent power
2.3 t
I prefer gingiums AWD sti miata

Im having a hard time finding the high pressured ac line sensor out of all things from this swap, other than that have had this for two years but i want ac now
This is a very unique motor swap. I think a single turbo with intercooler would make your car SCREAM!!!!!! I'm looking for my 3rd motor for my 95 Nissan 200SX 1.6 L. With an upgraded 6 speed manual and conversion to at least rear wheel drive. All wheel would be great. I know frown driving 2 Altima's that there fast. Add mods and OMG! But I lack the funds right now and a few health problems have me grounded. I'll never give up on the car. Currently I'm more focused on surviving WW3! But videos like this inspire me do at least something to the car. The wide body kit I put on it is very fragile and needs constant touch ups. So it's been in primer for 15+ years. I have a lot of work to do. I just can't go out and have my ticker time out. That would suck! I'm subbed and will be looking for future videos about this car along with upgrades!!!!!
Turbo setups are pretty dang fast on these cars. 400+whp feels like a rocket ship in a Miata. I don’t want the added reliability concerns of a turbo setup though.
As a NC owner I can say the aftermarket is in fact not endless.
Another 2.5 NC owner here. I feel your pain bud. We have a very small aftermarket for our specific chassis. It's stupid
Agreed! But it’s getting better. The more people build and race them on track the more this chassis will get support from vendors and manufacturers
this got me giggly lmao. I might have to do this once my 06's motor decides to retire ~64k miles rn.
Awesome car video
If you’re ever on the east coast of PA I’m more then willing to let you review my boosted 350z(big single turbo Vq35Hr) or my 300zx (N/A vert)!! Love the channel and love the content!! Keep on keeping on!!

It would be cool to drop a 2.0t LTG in a miata. 272/275hp 260/295 tq. These motors can make over 500 at the wheel with the proper parts and fueling.
You gotta find a rotary Miata then You can say you’ve driven them all
Yep. There are more that you would think of.
I wander if they have power potential once built? Id like to see a turbo one with only supporting mods like springs and retainers. 500hp potential?! perhaps!
100% man. Plenty of people out there running stock internal 2.5Ls with turbos making an easy 400whp. 500 would require forged internals but is absolutely doable.
Duratec 2.5 sounds amazing
The 2.5 also came in the mazda 3
