THIS WAS REALLY GREAT ! I THOUGHT I HAD LOGICALLY FIGURED OUT THE PROPER WAY TO TIE JAPANESE HELMET CHIN STRAPS , AND THIS VIDEO FINALLY CONFIRMS THAT I WAS CORRECT ! THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU !
good video, I noticed the IJA tied their puttees different then their western counter parts. I've also notice being a collector/reenactor of WWII uniforms and gear, how the Japanese kit was very simple but functional with greater use of tying parts together. For example, tying the pack to the waist belt verse American counter parts that had clips. Just interesting differences and very well done!
Metal was expensive, and they were all already pretty good at tying our cloths and anything they're trying to carry like a bag on a regular basis even with the westernization. It made alot of sense and cheaper to just tie stuff together.
Even their army boots have a very simple pig leather structure, it was just the soles that were complex. Japan was a poor country, so they could only afford to spend on parts that yielded the greatest dividends
I find tying puzzling (having used tied trousers in the rain, going for a pee can take time), the wholeand the use of leather belts and pouches shows they still have a good budget. (edit) The Viet Cong Black Pajama giving a lower budget reference
Fascinating! Thank you for doing this since we often see re-enactors for the European and US military forces. It is remarkable to see the kit of a Japanese infantryman. Familiar yet so different based on the culture of Nippon! Thank you.
Great video and very informative. It was great to see How to wear every item. I was surprised by the basic design of the Type 99 Tako backpack. It looks like an evolution of the prussian style backpack we use in the parade uniform of the Chilean Army's Escuela Militar (Officer School) and in a simplified form in the NCO School. The "marmita"( I don't know the English Word for the metal food container and pot combination) looks very simmilar. Our packs had a wooden frame and were fastened to the ammo pouches via bronce hooks. But the principle is the same. I also got to use the last model of field pack with the poncho and cloth objects tied in a horseshoe shape around the pack. I understand that contemporary school backpacks used by children in Japan are based on old European Military models, maybe there is a conection but I don't know.
Yes, like the Chilean ones, the wood frame backpack was based on the German model but reduced in size to fit the stature of the average Japanese person at the time.

As a former Civil War reenactor, I would argue that the haversack and canteen would be the last items put on (haversack before the knapsack though but not the canteen) as that's your food and water carriers. The canteen and haversack would never be strapped under the leather belt or put on first. If you need a drink now, or need to refill your canteen you have to remove everything else to simply get the canteen off! Just my observations. Everything a soldier does and carries has to do with need and functionality first! Civil War soldiers carried similar gear and we always put on our haversack and canteen over the top of everything else.
Interesting. I wonder how it would compare to german WWII uniform (which I'm familiar with) since some things seem more simplistic yet more practical, but some seem more uncomfortable.
WWII IJA equipment is pretty much a simplified evolution of German equipment from the 1880s/90s. I personally find it more comfortable to wear than German kit since there's less stuff hanging from the belt.
@@hattorihan7503 That would probably depend on the configuration of the german kit. Even if I have all on the belt, it can be made relatively comfortable if I use belt hooks (which would be similar to japanese system, although the japanese seems more simple, but fragile). On the other hand, the japanese kit seems to have a lot of things hanging on shoulder straps which I would assume would have to be very irritating on the shoulders (my shoulders are always sore when I use Y-straps, or even just shoulder strap for gasmask can, since japanese have canteen attached by shoulder strap, then that by itself must be irritating).
The Japanese Imperial Army did have a unit of White Russians who fled eastward after the Russian revolution. Was there uniform any different? Not much info on them. Not even sure what equipment or weapons they were issued.
They were a unit under the Manchukuo Imperial Army. Their uniforms would be similar to Japanese ones but with Manchukuo insignia and ranks. Weapons can range from Japanese origin to Chinese captures.

My Father was training at USMC Camp Pendleton for the invasion of Japan when the war ended! He went on to own a tiki bar called the Volcano in Long Beech, CA. I remember many of his customers with 'Sailor Jerry' tattoos, they never talked about the war. The only good thing to come out of WWII was Gojida!
Yup! It functions like the 3 point chinstraps you see in modern ballistic helmets, so its quite snug on the head. Also allows a soldier to tie it across his back when not in use.
@@hattorihan7503 Looking at it the three point helmet seems to pop up through history, here is that Samurai Kabuto: www.samuraimuseum.jp/shop/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/OG109347-scaled.jpg The Romans also had three point helmet straps as well and speaking as a Roman reenactor myself our helms are quite snug.

@@fanta4897 so which uniform would you find more comfortable?
@@danelassiter6809 I don't know until I try both. I suppose I would be biased towards german one anyway since I'm already used to it.
German ww2 uniform is cool
That was very interesting, thanks for making the video.
Японский солдат одевался также церемониально и долго как принято в Японии 😅 Спасибо за видео, очень интересно👍

Well done. Found this very informative.
I enjoyed this video. Salute!

Excellent! Very informative. Thank You for the presentation.
Dude this is awesome. We dont see many vids on Japanese reenactors, really glad you posted this friend!!
La colocación del casco recuerda al "men" que es para Kendo y al Kabuto de los samurais
My grandpa wore this uniform. I've only seen a few black-and-white photos, thanks for showing it like this.
Simple, criminally simple! Simple, robust and utilitary!!
Was the helmet cord system based on a Samurai's kabuto? It looks quite close to me and it is unique among all the helmets I have seen from the era.
Yup! It functions like the 3 point chinstraps you see in modern ballistic helmets, so its quite snug on the head. Also allows a soldier to tie it across his back when not in use.
@@hattorihan7503 Looking at it the three point helmet seems to pop up through history, here is that Samurai Kabuto: www.samuraimuseum.jp/shop/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/OG109347-scaled.jpg
The Romans also had three point helmet straps as well and speaking as a Roman reenactor myself our helms are quite snug.
Good to see the IJA getting some reenactment attention. So much of their unique equipment is still unknown even to those who are intimately familiar with with the uniforms and equipment of the European powers.
My great-grandfather was a professional military personnel.(The rank was second lieutenant)
My great-grandfather also went to war in this way.
Thank you for the good video.

I am a novelist, and I am writing a scene in which a character gets dressed. What you have put forth here is both strange as a topic for a video in 2022 but supernaturally timely for me in my moment. I could not do what I must do without this. May you live and prosper for ten thousand years! Wait! Where have I heard that? Nevermind...
Bro preparing to go to Okinawa
It's interesting to see how many different knots and especially "friction knots" they used to hold their equipment together. Really cuts down on having yo use metal for buckles and fasteners.
Love this vid. Was there any diffrence in officers field caps vs enlisted field caps?
Officer field caps typically had metal eyelets and a pentagonal backing on the star insignia

To the creator of the video, Can you just give the music link?
Thank you for the video! It would be interesting to see how quickly a real IJA private first class (an experienced well drilled soldier of 1.5+ years of service) would have dressed up like this. I guess a factor of 3 quicker
Not sure how the internet would react if German wore their WW2 uniform
