This Snake Trend is NOT Satisfying | How to Help Bad Sheds

  • there's this video trend going around about how "aesthetically pleasing" it is to pull off snake sheds,
while the snakes in some of the videos do appear to be just fine, it is starting a trend that isn't safe!
this video goes through the entire shedding process, how it works, and how to properly help stuck sheds if you encounter them. thank u guys so much for watching :')
**CREDIT to Draco.Exotics (instagram username) for the two shed videos that I said weren't done poorly. I don't think he did anything wrong with his animals, my issue was that it was taken and shared around with no context and passed off as a "trendy" "aesthetic" thing to do, which lead to people improperly doing it just because they thought it looked neat. So please do not send any negative words to him.

Priscilla I mostly agree, but people own exotic pets all the time. If you take care of them right (such as myself) and give them an enriching environment better than a pet shop or so forth. And no matter what anyone does pet shops are always going to sell them. I take care of all my pets. My Madagascar hissing cockroach, my beta fish, and my hermit crabs. So as long as you take care of them well and they aren’t a truly wild animal (such as lions, gators, and ect) think it is okay. People own exotic reptiles such as iguanas. And own exotic rodents such as hedgehogs and dengus. My hermit crabs cuddle up and always like walking around on my hands. I think it’s nice to save some sort of pets from those shops. Just my opinion. Just like to inform you. I know they get bigger when they are older so I’ll move them all to their own separate enclosures and when I move out of my parents place eventually when they get so big I’ll make an enclosure outside for summer weather. If that makes you feel better!

I find it endlessly satisfying when I've seen my snake shedding and it comes off like that, slowly turning inside out in 1 piece, the way a proper shed should be...
But I mean- it's satisfying to watch on a few levels, but mostly because me walking in to actually see them shedding and not just find the skin after is ultra rare, and no matter how many times they have a perfect shed, I still feel a sense of accomplishment that their conditions were ideal for them to produce it.
I never bothered any of the snakes I've had/worked with, when they're in shed. Their eyes go blue and I leave them alone... but that's my rule of thumb when they're actively shedding, I don't touch them unless there's clearly a shedding problem- then usually it's nothing either a humidity box, or a soak- depending on the snake- won't fix, in the cases where I was working with a snake who didn't have ideal circumstances. Maybe a warm water wash cloth after a soak to help remove stuck eye caps...
But even if the people who started this trend know enough to not pull if there's any resistance at all- the vast majority of people would absolutely hurt the snake by forcing it for a video.

This video was so nice and helpful! I was so worried about my kingsnake, it wasn't eating and it was looking duller/had blue eyes. I didn't know that babies shed monthly and I was worried because it shed 2 weeks ago and had a stuck eye cap causing me to increase humidity. But this video put me at ease, I have been following you for years and I am so proud of your recovery 🥰

ACTUALLLLYYYYYYY the ones done by draco exotics are 100% professional. the snakes have a condition that makes it so they are incapable of doing it themselves. also the environment can be completely different than the ones they are used to (like humidity) and that ofc plays a role in the way they are meant to shed. THATS ALL. THANK YOU

Great job explaining all the shedding issues, and for mentioning turtles, which I have had. I was poorly educated in turtle care when I bought them but even I knew not to mess with their shedding. Some people are very ignorant in regards to the animals they are meant to care for, which is not necessarily a bad thing, they just need to educate themselves before doing anything that may cause harm.

I have an uncle who has always had snakes and this stuff freaks him out. He told me it's equivalent to peeling scabs off before the new skin underneath is ready, which will eventually create tough patches that makes future sheds difficult.
He had an big albino python who had been miskept before he got her, to the point where she couldn't shed without assistance. But! That required soaks in a bathtub(she was huge) and very, very gentle handling. No peeling, scrubbing or rough environment for her. And regular vet check ups to make sure she didn't get any sores and infections.

I took a video of my snake, Pretzel shedding and it got SO popular. But he was in his tank shedding, and I wasn’t touching him, and it still looked really cool.
So it just shows that you can still film them in the enclosure, and you don’t have to pull it off them because they can do it themselves.

One thing I do that helps me from falling down a social media spiral, is if I see a comment I *really* feel like I want to respond to for negative reasons, I allow myself to respond *once*. I say everything I need to sayin that first comment and then I unfollow the conversation and turn off notifications, and never look back. Twitter and other twitter clients have the ability to mute threads, facebook lets you turn iff notifications for a post etc.
Sometimes I write out a response and just delete it without posting it, then move on without responding at all.

    I want to say:
It is okay to pull off a snakes shed! If it’s in blue and some shed is stuck it’s okay to peel it as it’s ready to come off and won’t hurt the animal at all! It’s just best to let the shed come off on its own. If you don’t feel comfortable peeling it off if you’re scared of hurting the animal, put it in a warm bath and wipe that shed off with a wet wash cloth.
In no way are you hurting an animal by pulling off shed that’s ready to come off.

Anyone here watch snake discovery? They are snake breeders that also makes basic snake care videos. Helping the shed off when the snake has already begun is harmless but should never be done unless needed anyways. Also eye caps never use anything pointy like a tweezer use a warm damp towel and rub lightly until it is off. I’m not saying Taylor is wrong but some of these things should only be done by professionals like tweezer or finger near eyes is No no just a little to much force can blind the snake or if the snake jerks so much can go wrong, if you need to do this use soft fabrics.
