    I use the GFX50R for dance and portrait shoots. AF performance looks very similar to this one. I only use it in single point, single shot AF mode. Anything else is unreliable, especially in low light. But lenses make a big difference: the 50/3.5 is much better than the 45, and the 110 is ok too (better than the 80 I'd say). Different AF motors etc. Image quality is fantastic of course 🙂

    Too slow, amazing how all the masters of portrait prior to 2000 could create their work. Must be some kind of magic, or we are just too incompetent and stupid to do reall photography today. Or just hoodwinked by greedy companies selling useless gear that we don't need.

    • @LeeZavitz

      I think that prior to 2000 only the best would be nailing manual focus from years of practice. There was a lot less pros. Like imagine sports photography before autofocus? Crazy stuff. I also assume the photos weren’t nearly as sharp as now too

      Dude such a flawed argument. It's like saying a car is too slow and then counter arguing that horse carriages used to take people places. The whole point is that if there is a technology out, it would be nite to have it optimized.

    Owned for 2 sessions and returned it. It’s a fantastic camera don’t get me wrong but it was the unused resolution that just didn’t do it for me. Even for my big paying clients, 90% of the work was going on Instagram so the end result was no better than my XT4. I just reinvested in better lights.

      For me the mega pixels matter less now that cameras are all kind of pushing 33-50mp. It mainly comes down to tonality and medium format image. Personally the camera feels way to slow for me. But I know for some people shooting products etc it would be perfectly fine

    I'm always surprised when people ask those "is it too slow" questions. Maybe I'm just old, but I was there when the digital revolution came about, I've shot film for many years and I think that EVERY SINGLE digital camera is at least "fast enough", most of them being "way faster than necessary". At least for portraits, I'm not talking pictures of birds mid-flight and sports.

    • @gaarakabuto1
      @gaarakabuto1 2 года назад

      Eh, the reality is that the industry wraps around the standards of technology so in some cases you need to get to the speed of a company or magazine or something, leading to simply preferring what simply works.
      I have used GFX for concerts and I do get the pressure of getting shots within a period of time, but I also think that these scenarios are rare in the portraiture industry.
      I greatly feel like GFX is much slower in editing though and I would say that that's the real downside if anything.

    • @SMGJohn
      @SMGJohn 2 года назад +1

      Thats true but how many shots did you miss with your film camera because it was too slow? Technology will always move forward and I agree for most people, they always buy overkill cameras, but with faster cameras these days and getting cheaper as well, opens new possibilities.

Didn't notice any significant difference compared to XT-3, X-Pro 3, etc. Actually, that was the 2nd time I enjoyed using shooting with medium format. Previous medium format bodies like Hasselblad H3 had clunky AF, not that fun for handheld shooting.

    If you want super fast and intelligent focus for highly dynamic situations, then go buy a Canon 1Dx, which operates around 20MP. The GFX series brings amazing photographs and it is fast enough for most cases. You get 50MP or even 102MP depending on the camera. The DR is amazing and the raw images allow you to do great things with the photo in post. I have the GFX100 and I love the beast. It is extraordinary.

    I know feedback helps camera brands to make "better" or faster or bigger gear... but I find absurd how many people only complaint about camera features that just a few years ago were not even on the map. Before GFX having multiple AF points and fast AF in a medium format camera was just an idea, a wish. With Hasselblad cameras you had to deal with just one single centered AF point and people used to make it work you know? Now, even with all the mind blowing stuff packed inside a GFX camera we seem to be impossible to please... I know it´s the way of progress and things will get there soon but still I think it's a wrong user approach to expect a medium format digital camera to perform as fast as a full frame or APS-C camera.

I've been very disappointed in the EVF on the 50SII, where the quality is so poor that it's practically impossible to manually focus a lens through the EVF. Old school. I’m glad I don’t have to shoot this way anymore with how spoiled we are with awesome autofocus in new cameras. AF-S focus recompose will Never get you as sharp of eye in focus as a good eye af autofocus system. Obviously if you shoot AF-S without eye af on this camera and use the smallest af point (which I do often) it’s close but there’s a lot more chances for you do focus on eye lashes instead of eye ball.

    Slow… I use a H3D II… Lets stop over hyping “speed”. Thats why everyone shots the same today, spray and pray they get a shot. Not “planning”. So many photographers just lcd screen shoot and miss crucial micro moments in expressions or movement. Im glad I stuck with old slow cameras. Always put my work ahead of my peers who use mirrorless and all the fancy gadgets but never seem to connect with the subjects. Theres a psychological aspect of shooting models through a view finder because they arent just connecting with the camera, but you. It challenges them. Ive shot models for over 10 years and the best results are not from rear view shooting, its a bad habit and fundamentally has draw backs for people photography.

    I'm really torn about the GFX 50S II. I feel like every shot you got there which were amazing would have looked pretty much the same with the XT4 with the correct equivalent lenses. I had the fuji bug bad and wanted the GFX50S II but the autofocus and the price although I could have afforded it put me off so I got an XT4 and it's been amazing. And since there are the f1.0 f1.2 and f1.4 lenses available for X mount I feel like you really aren't losing out on that much background blur compared to medium format unless you get very expensive medium format lenses and are trying to achieve a very specific look and give up practicality. For example that 45mm 2.8 GFX lens you were using is pretty close in focal length and background blur to the 23mm 1.4 for X mount.

    • @LeeZavitz
      @LeeZavitz  2 года назад +2

      I think it would be closer to the 33mm f1.4. But I agree with everything you said. Unless it’s more resolution, better lowlight performance and way better dynamic range. medium format is the way to go. Outside of that it would be hard to tell the difference shooting the same shot

      The image quality in the hands of a skilled operator blows FF out of the water.
      If you're shooting and posting to places where your images will be compressed, it's not going to make that much of a difference.
      Once you open an RAW MF image, the resolution, detail and pixel quality is phenomenal.

    What does 35mm crop mode do on a native GFX lens? Say you had the 80mm F/1.7 which works out to be a 63mm F/1.3 in full frame terms. Does that 35mm crop mode turn the lens into a true 80mm F/1.7?

      Any time I have a Fuji camera in to shoot with I try af-c and always remember it’s hit or miss. That said. The newer f1.4 primes Fuji released are very fast and smooth and I could trust them more for face and eye in af-c. 18mm,23mm,33mm

      @@LeeZavitz Thanks - I'll have to play around with C-AF more as it sure seems to work for you. I've used it outdoors ONCE for some candids and it did well with moving subjects and some head shots. I'm rocking the Viltrox 23mm f1.4 and 56mm f1.4 atm while learning the ropes - both are impressive lenses with little to complain about. When the new Fuji 23mm can be had used, or when they release a 56mm Mk2, I'll be pouncing as I realized I love both these lengths for indoor/outdoor portrait type stuff.

    Again and again... Contrast AF is not the reason why it is slow. See how Panasonic cameras performs with contrast AF only - it's very fast. This is a huge sensor and reading is slow. Phase detection pixels absence sits in 3rd row in case of AF speed.

    I will take contrast detect over phase detect anytime. I'm focusing manually 100% of the time so I don't want any feature that will compromise image quality for convenience, which is what PDAF does (along with IBIS).

    • @professionalpotato4764
      @professionalpotato4764 2 года назад

      Negligible "compromises". Taking the A7R4 sensor for example, 567 pixels are used, out of 61 million. You only lose 0.0000093% of image quality. If phase detect was really an issue, the entire world wouldn't be using it.

    • @TomWangArt
      @TomWangArt 2 года назад +2

      @@professionalpotato4764 Those "negligible compromises" add up until they are not so negligible at all. More computational features to support PDAF, IBIS, video or whatever require faster processors, more electronic components, bigger batteries etc, all of which generate additional heat and basically trade image quality and user experience for convenience. For people who know how to create exceptional images without a buttload of computational aids this is a pain. Of course manufacturers will market those features as being extremely beneficial and will not tell you anything about the compromises they had to make because the competition does that as well and after all they want to make sales. Unfortunately they listen to RUclips influencers more than they do to photographers who actually know how to use their gear properly as those are the minority. So yes, the entire world will still use it no matter how ridiculous this is simply because there is (almost) no alternative at all. Guess why you will find none of those features on the very high end professional bodies where image quality is highest priority, like f.e. Hasselblad or P1. Unfortunately those systems lack the analog vibe that I liked about Fujifilm, otherwise I would have made the switch already after being a huge Fujifilm fan for many years. As Fujifilm seems not to care much about what they initially promised and clearly is focussing on mainstream market share instead I'm currently considering a switch to the Leica M system as they still seem to care about their legacy...

      @@TomWangArt Hmm. I beg to differ.
      1) PDAF has miniscule effects. You can take the same exact shot with a Panasonic S5 and a Sony A7iii, colour grade them to scientifically match and nobody will know which is which. If they can, they should apply to either work in Pantone or become a god. Like seriously.
      2) IBIS has less chance of causing poor images than shooting at 1/200 on some cameras. Some camera bodies cannot shoot around the 1/200 range as the shutter shock has the same natural frequency which 100% guarantees a soft image once there is sufficient pixels. Also some cameras like the A7R4 has too high of a pixel density and cannot shoot lower than 1/500 just due to shutter shock alone. Even on a tripod.
      3) Heat affects things but not as much as you make it out to be. If the sensors were that sensitive to heat, cameras would be water cooled and cinema cameras would be cool via liquid nitrogen. The fact that most companies have an operational range shows that there is no effect of heat on image within those ranges. Shooting ISO 100 in winter vs in summer wouldn't cause you to lose dynamic range all of a sudden.
      4) If image quality is of your highest priority, you shouldn't even be looking at small sensor cameras like Leicas. The tiny full frame sensor has utterly worse dynamic range and image quality compared to a common digital medium format. You might get better results investing in a digital back for a Hasselblad. If you're rich enough, you should be getting engineers to custom build a personal large format camera.
      5) Leicas in my opinion are basically the Louis Vuitton of cameras. Expensive with zero benefits (and more downsides actually). Poor autofocus, pure monochrome cameras? hmmm. Idk. I don't see a point. They have some great lenses though.
      6) The "high end" bodies come at a heft cost. You will be paying a lot more due to the Law of Diminishing Returns. There's a reason the industry has settled on full frame as a baseline standard. Not just because of history, but all the R&D in the last few decades has made it the optimal size for optimal image quality with least sacrifices. I guess if you can get paid to shoot a single photo >$20k it doesn't matter, just get the most expensive thing in the world.
      6) We're all different, so this is just my opinion. No matter how much one hones his skill, there is a human ceiling. You'll never be able to get 85% sharp hitrates at 50mm f/1.8 on a 10fps burst using manual focus. To me, what matters is the result. A camera is just a tool and I like the ones that let me get the shot. Of course the feel and use is important. I gravitate more towards Fuji even though full frame cameras are far superior in image quality. It's just more enjoyable. I hated the analogue dials, but now I love it. I don't even use the command dials anymore. So I kinda get where you are coming from regarding analogue feel.
      But, time moves on. Just as how it used to be "manlier" or more "skilled" to drive a manual car, these days, the vast majority are automatic. Just how things are.

    • @TomWangArt
      @TomWangArt 2 года назад

      @@professionalpotato4764 The significant increase of PDAF points with the introduction of the X-Trans 3 sensor has initially caused a serious banding problem that had to be corrected by software updates to prevent a lot of images from being unusable. This is not exactly my association of achieving the best image quality possible. In fact I want as little computational aids as possible being involved in my digital image creating process, (including autofocus & IBIS). If something does not go the way I expect it I want to have to blame (and improve) my own skills for the mistake and not having some algorithms possibly being responsible. With my GFX camera being used on a tripod and focused manually 100% of the time anything else only gets in the way and unnecessarily increases power consumption (even IBIS does so when turned off) and degrades the user experience. I already own some Leica M lenses which I use adapted on my X-Pro3 and I am very impressed with both image and built quality. They are on a level that Fujifilm can't touch and I don't expect the M11 body to be any different. The only thing I would miss on the M11 is the lack of a dedicated exposure compensation dial, but as Fujifilm is constantly getting rid of the analog experience anyway and is focusing on mainstream camcorders for RUclips instead of cameras "designed by photographer for photographers" (which is what they initially promised) they are only making my decision to switch to the M-System easier with every single new release. I'm currently waiting for my second native Voigtlander XF mount lens to be shipped for my X-Pro3 & X-T3 because I stopped using my Fujinons as their focus by wire experience is simply unacceptable. It was a very promising system at the beginning but they are currently changing the direction very clearly. Right now it might be very attractive for social media content creators but for pure and unobstructed photographic experience this is where they don't deliver anymore. Leica M does, and this is exactly what I'm looking for.
