While many Irish names are familiar, their past incarnations are often shrouded in mystery, reflecting the ancient Gaelic heritage of their bearers. The original Gaelic form of the name Murtha is O'Muircheartaigh, which is derived from the word "muircheartach," which means "navigator." I'm one of the million New Yorkers that is related to Niall of the Nine Hostages. \m/

Our Family crest is almost the same as the flag of Connacht because of the clan Murtagh/O'Conner I am also descended from Conn of a hundred battles.

son of Niul, was bitten in the neck by a snake. Thats why we have a green snake on a sword on our crest. The snake bite left a green scar, so Gaodhal became Gaodhal Glas, because Glas means green

Geni takes me back to the Nine Hostages...Do you want the MtDNA of the Oneil or just the Y DNA ??...thanks..LU...

mtDNA doesn't follow surnames and would be of no use. Also it is worth noting that nobody can trace themselves back to Niall of the Nine Hostages as there is no proof of him ever existing. People posting dubious trees laying claim to connecting to someone as far back as that is a huge problem in geneology.
